Didn’t a weapons expert deem her Sith Saber to be one of the stupidest and dangerous designs he’d ever seen?

kylo’s saber is also dumb but it looks cool, so whatever

I mean, lightsabers in general are pretty stupidly dangerous… But that’s why Star Wars is fantasy and not Sci-Fi.

Kind of building on the idea of the crackly Skywalker saber, I think it could be interesting if during Kylo and Rey’s duel on the Death Star, that Rey’s saber was almost becoming “overloaded” from the constant saber-clashing, and starts shorting out by the end of the duel. For example, in the shot where Rey sort of shakes her hand, you could have the saber fluttering in and out. Then finally, when Kylo keeps hammering away at Rey while she is on the ground, we could see the saber give out while Kylo is raising his to deliver the final blow. This would give a reason for why Rey grabs Kylo’s saber and stabs him with it, rather than just using her own.

I think it would add an interesting aspect to the duel that we haven’t really seen before, where our characters are dealing with a malfunctioning weapon. It also gives Rey a practical reason for why she inevitably builds her own.

But Rey wanted to use Kylo Ren’s lightsaber so her impalement of him with that specific lightsaber would be symbolic of how he killed Han with that specific lightsaber. The impaler becomes the impalee with that same lightsaber.

You mean she did for the symbolism? I mean, this doesn’t change the symbolism…

Rey is self-aware. lol

But I do like that idea! RogueLeader is a fan editing genius.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I mean, some characters do specific things in specific movies, games and episodes of series for symbolic reasons, regardless of whether they’re self-aware of not.

That’s a REALLY good idea, dude.

I’m wondering how that effect would look and sound?

It might be a pain, but you could make the the saber more crackly, or wavy(?) as it becomes more unstable, and then we could see the saber either oscillate, or maybe even fade or dissipate. You could distort the regular saber sounds, like when it ignites or deactivates. Maybe you could add a spark effect sort of like what you have with Kylo’s. I mean, I think only one or two effects would be necessary to really sell it. The hard part might be masking out the blade for a few frames here and there to show it malfunctioning.

Agreed! Maybe use it twice but a different effect on each.

  1. switches on and off a few times with a dissolve.

  2. switches off with a spark then reignites.

This is great and it will definitely give AOTC vibes when Anakin have his saber damaged in Geonosis droid’s factory

That’s great. That effect and sound can even be mimicked for yet another call back. It would also give Rey reason for burying it at the end that seemed a little weird.

I think is really easy to have an effect like this. I also like the symbolism of Rey beeing so consumed and drived by her anger on Kylo and that whole situtation that she kinda explodes and stabs Kylo. Just like the Saber that is so overused and forced to be in there, it craclkes ad fails.
That is great editing guys, a simple change enrichs the movie’s themes.

Yeah, I’ve already done some nice tweaks to that scene but this effect would give another great little detail to why her rage gets the better of her. I’ll wait to get the high res crackling scene and see if this works in reality.

Fantastic idea RogueLeader.

Awesome! I can’t wait to see your interpretation of it! I had the idea, but I don’t have a concrete idea for how it should look, so it will be cool seeing someone else add their own creativity to it.

I had the idea while I was brainstorming for a Palpatine-less TROS edit, but I realized it could work for a more conservative edit of the movie as well.

While we’re imagining up visual changes to make Rey more interesting in this film, I know we’d all have loved if she wore black throughout, but that seems like a big ask, VFX-wise. But what if she wore a black or even a gray outfit in the final scene? Or maybe black with white wraps? Might be more doable.

Could be some new things to chew on for a later version of Ascendant. 🤔

I can give black robes in the final scene a shot, but I’m not entirely sold on the symbolism. Are they black because it’s a funeral of sorts, or to imply she’s integrated Ben Solo somehow, or to imply something about the force alignment of her new generation of Jedi?

I feel like the black robes would make most sense in the part of the movie where she’s worried about turning to the dark side, to draw a closer parallel to her vision of Sith Rey - but then you’d lose the white/black duality between her and Ben on Kef Bir and Exegol, which would be a shame.

Yeah, I think this was talked about in another thread and someone actually achieved it in EbSynth for a small clip but I think to achieve it in a full scene would take a lot of work.

If love to see that happen if anyone has the time and skill.
