Well all my work has currently being decimated by coronaviras.

Live events are struggling to happen. I have a lot of time on my hands but I need to focus on perhaps finding some alternate work so there is money coming in.

So I need a break and deal with problems.

To be ho honest with you everything is quite self explanatory apart from R2-D2 in the canyon.

This has quite a few question marks about the order of scenes also.

There is a cut away in the middle I think…

And there is another cut away when they are carrying R2-D2 up the hill.

The music does not line up entirely. And the music cue has been discarded in favor of music edits.

The Special Edition does on occasion correct intention of a scene… But to me it looks like the Special Edition Sandcrawler was shot to fill the missing shot in that canyon sequence. Then they decided to remove the Original shot of Sandcrawler and use this shot instead… But all along all that is missing is the establishing shot of the Sandcrawler at Lars Homestead as they have stopped. They even removed the dialogue because here because of a missing shot the dialogue does not work and still does not work even now.

Best way to do this is to do an Adywan on C3P0 sandcrawler.

Move Special Edition Sandcrawler to middle of canyon.

Create sunset and sandcrawler shot to fix jump cut carrying R2.

Create Sandcrawler establishing shot Lars Homestead.

When it comes to Vader and Bast I think this scene needs bringing forward. Once again we have a missing establishing shot of smoke rising behind the sand dunes for Sandcrawler so I place Vader and Bast directly before they discover the Sandcrawler.

Shot of Death Star… Vader and Bast… Wipe to smoke coming from behind sand dunes and resume.
Wonder if the Dewback Special edition music works on this scene?

Eveything that is wrong with this part is connected to the Sandcrawler in some way and it now becomes obvious the struggle of the Sandcrawler and trying to get rid of anything about it Special effects wise and the smoke rising behind ghe sand dunes became redundant because Vader and Bast scene was removed. Although it was the easiest Sandcrawler shot to do because it was not in camera.

Or perhaps they wanted to show the Sandcrawler destroyed and derelict and again it is missing visually narrative shots. All to do with the Sandcrawler.

Done a few bits regarding R2-D2 in canyon music cue and will not be doing establishing shot of Sandcrawler at Lars homestead will cut straight to R2-D2 asleep keeping things very simple with sound effects can do the work.

I have prepared an edit of the turret battle death star escape but I am not sharing that until I top and tail it with dodgy music cut or footage issue there and death star viewscreen missing shot but the battle is done.

I also will re-up prision block gun battle correct scene order. Not been doing much on the deleted scenes at the moment but i will get around to it at some point.

Thanks

The whole “re-edit the movie to how my (faulty) memory says it should have been all along” idea is intriguing for a fan edit. I would love to see an unedited video of the Rough Cut, even if it looks and sounds terrible and has lots of “scene missing” cards and stock footage or production stills and animatics from the storyboards. I may not agree with every editor’s choices, but I’m not going to say he shouldn’t make it if he really wants to… (even if it’s based on a movie I hated and think can’t be saved, which is not this movie). I would love to see a super cut of all the missing and alternate or deleted footage put back in, like a Star Wars motion scrapbook… not just like Deleted Magic but like a movie you can watch beginning to end.

Still, didn’t Adywan pump up the volume on the “twin setting suns” scene because that’s how he “always remembered it”? Nobody bashed him for that…

I have a few vids lined up but really I just want to put things in a correct order of sequence and add obvious missing stuff to be honest without going overboard. Nothing flash.

As you say it’s not something that needs saving because it is actually really good. Mostly I find the way the action is edited is all wrong but the story and the dialogue are all good.

Simply by editing the action better this film will “get better” not that it is bad the story does not need to change.

Interestingly whilst working on the canyon sequence the 1997 TV cut is edited differently from the 97 theatrical version in a few places (a few trims) but the purpose of this thread is to try and figure stuff out really at the end of the day and find a “workprint” type edit that put’s jumbled sequences in a better order and try to figure out integration for the deleted scenes.

I thought I would leave this edit here…

Leias rescue (Cell Block shoot out)

https://vimeo.com/479602804

It’s a small edit and it’s quite a good one I think… 😃

Let’s just say a mechanical menace is no more.

Enjoy!

Here is another… Red Leaders Demise

https://vimeo.com/479627710

Putting footage in correct order and a simple effect shot. Just noticed the Audio is in on the explosion of Red Leaders ship but there has to be a cut to make it synch agin for the dialogue in the following scenes.

Last one for today Mos Eisley Entrance

https://vimeo.com/479629408

footage matched to sound (almost) although I think I will re do this one as there is a small alternative before they get stopped seeing the red / white speeder in full is the trick… Also of note the “still image” looking at the dewback and the Cantina is probably replaced with live footage zoom of live action Jawa and model Dewback.

Lockdown got me bored…

Dashboard for the Landspeeder is done… It took a while and it will be seen for about 1.5 seconds but it’s cool and the graphic can then be restored to the greenscreen area.

I Removed a lot of clips that were bare placed the screen in portrait and added a 50’s chrome dashboard style for the speaker and control knob thinking American graphitti style so I made it a bit more plush but retained most of the original design.
