'Today, Disney+ ordered its next animated series from Lucasfilm, Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Fresh off of the critically-acclaimed series finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Disney+ original series will premiere on the streaming service in 2021.

The series follows the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch (first introduced in The Clone Wars) as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy in the immediate aftermath of the Clone War. Members of Bad Batch — a unique squad of clones who vary genetically from their brothers in the Clone Army — each possess a singular exceptional skill, which makes them extraordinarily effective soldiers and a formidable crew. In the post-Clone War era, they will take on daring mercenary missions as they struggle to stay afloat and find new purpose.

“Giving new and existing fans the final chapter of Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been our honor at Disney+, and we are overjoyed by the global response to this landmark series,” said Agnes Chu, senior vice president, Content, Disney+. “While The Clone Wars may have come to its conclusion, our partnership with the groundbreaking storytellers and artists at Lucasfilm Animation is only beginning. We are thrilled to bring Dave Filoni’s vision to life through the next adventures of the Bad Batch.”

Yuck. They were the worst part of the final season. I slogged through their episodes just to get to the stuff everyone was saying was so great (and it was pretty good). But no way I’m devoting time to a whole series based on these characters.

“A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.”

This has potential and I really enjoyed their episodes, even if not anywhere near my favorite. Surprised they’d announce this series before a rumored Rebels sequel series.

Well, it’s all making sense now. Bad Batch didn’t make much sense in the larger context of Season 7 before. I’m disappointed a third of the final season was just setup for a future show.

That said, the Clone Wars animation style is really amazing and I’d love to see more of it. Hopefully, they don’t dumb it down to Rebels quality. For the story, setting it post-CW is going to be interesting, especially if it’s right after the Empire with the clones having nowhere left to turn. I just hope it doesn’t devolve into the Bad Batch joining the Rebel Alliance after the first few episodes.

I don’t think the Bad Batch is interesting enough to build a series around, but I thought the same thing before The Mandalorian was released, and I was very, very, wrong. They must have a cool idea where they want to go with it. Can’t wait to see it!

Sounds boring. I’ve never understood the clone obsession.

I don’t think it’s specifically because they’re clones. Some people just like the military style battles and strategy. I prefer lightsaber battles myself. The episodes that deal with their freedom of choice and identity were pretty good too. Reminded me of Blade Runner.

This feels like DLC, glad whoever is excited is excited, but a hard pass from me.

I can’t help but feel as though this is a wasted opportunity. The Republic Commandos make several appearances in the show. It would have been awesome if they were used instead of the Bad Batch for Season 7. If we got a series about them, it could have picked up where the game left off seeing as how it ended on a cliffhanger. It would have been really cool if we got a remake/remaster of the game to coincide with it.

Now I’m sad 😦

Luke astro-projects himself to Salt Lake Planet, gets shot at by gorilla walkers, has a non-lightsaber duel with Darth Millennial, then dies of a broken heart, inspiring broom boys throughout the galaxy to get creative with their sweeping. - DuracellEnergizer

Same here. I’d be surprised if this gets a second season.

I’m actually decently excited. This, I think, could be a good way to cover the early days of the Galactic Empire’s rise to power in the galaxy. It’d be very interesting to see things like the clone trooper’s final days in service to the Empire to their eventual replacement by standard stormtroopers, how the Empire dealt with systems that rebelled against imperial rule early on and maybe even get to see some of Darth Vader and the Inquisitorius, all through the eyes of a squad of “defective” clone troopers who, due to their defects, may or may not have obeyed when order 66 was issued. I think it may have the potential to be quite an interesting series IF they do not drag it on for too long. Maybe 3 seasons at most?

I’m choosing optimism and hoping for the best.

I hope this in the into:

“Ten years ago a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum-security stockade to the Imperial underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem… if no one else can help… and if you can find them… maybe you can hire… The Bad Batch.”

I think it wouldn’t be a bad thing to do the show in a similar way, lol

I predict it’ll last about as long as that Resistance show.

It’s gonna be great. These were the last characters created by George back when he was running things, and were always intended to spin off into their own show.

Can’t wait for it to come out.

There will be an expansion pack of Bad Batch characters for the new Lego Skywalker Saga game. That game is scheduled to be released in Spring 2021. Could this series be released around the same time or before? The Bad Batch did show up in season 7 of The Clone Wars, but I’m thinking they may want to start their series not long after The Mandalorian season 2 finishes up, just to keep the streaming going. I think the character pack DLC would make more sense after the series premiers, but I suppose the arc they’ve already been in could be enough. Just wishful thinking.

It would most likely start streaming in a similar timeline to Clone Wars’ final season, winter 2021, give or take a couple weeks, as it’s the almost entirely the same team (writers, animators, editors, etc… give or take a couple new hires).

Mandalorian shifted a week or so between seasons, so maybe Bad Batch will be slightly earlier in 2021 than Clone Wars was in 2020… or maybe it’ll be slightly later due to COVID-19. Disney may not have even decided yet.

The Star Wars YouTube channel put up this sizzle video earlier today:

I’ll have to re-watch the last season of The Clone Wars to see their introduction, this look pretty good and hopefully does well.

Anyone else spot Fennec Shand in the trailer? She appears at 0:41 & 0:50. I really like the idea of getting a “Filoniverse” as I’ve heard people call it being the new thing for SW. We are after all getting this animated series and two live action series produced and co-written by Filoni. It’s really good to see that he’s finally getting the big recognition that he deserved and that we have some sense of cohesion and inter-connectivity with the various series.

Has Filoni not been getting respect?

I didn’t say he wasn’t respected, I was referring to how Disney/Lucasfilm treated him as just the “animation guy” for a long time, but now he’s the co-producer on three live-action series as well as the guy they trusted to direct the first episode of the first live-action SW series ever. When the ST movies were being made a lot of fans wanted Filoni to be more involved with the live-action stories and not just do the “kids” shows, and now he’s doing just that, as well keeping the animated series going.

I think some of that was Filoni as well. Animation and live action are very different in how they’re made. Filoni was initially nervous to do 3D Animation instead of something he could draw, and also he was untested and it would’ve been a big risk to have him do one of the sequels.

Directing actors in animation is only during a production record, and an entire episode can be done in a day, as opposed to a couple weeks and having to direct an actor’s face to shape into how you’d like it “drawn”.

Like, everyone here hates The Last Jedi, but Filoni credits Rian Johnson with teaching him how to direct actors on a set.

It wasn’t disrespectful for Filoni to learn how to do the job before it was handed to him.

Yes, I agree with all that, but again, I never said anything about him not getting respect. I was talking about Disney/Lucasfilm properly using his SW expertise. He has been known as someone who has a great grasp of SW as a whole for quite a while and I think it was really wise of Favreau to bring him onboard for the Mandalorian as a co-producer and as a creative consultant. From watching the Disney Gallery series it’s heavily implied that he was the “lore guy” that made sure everything worked within the larger framework of the franchise (especially Lucas’s core ideas, or “vision” if you will). The fact that he’s now also directed several live-action episodes is just an added bonus. I didn’t mean he should have directed one of ST movies or something like that, but I do feel that he wasn’t properly utilized for a while.
