Star Wars Saga: Silent Film Edition (Released) — Page 7

I'm having technical trouble with the 4:3 thing...  so the new version will takes a little more times to do.

Well I think the clean version is a good "trailer" for now! So I feel like I can take my time to do a good Dusty edition and do not rush the work.

take your time to get it right..

no one should be rushing...

we can wait for a better version..

I'm planning to make few editing changes in the new version.

One of them is about the meeting between Maul/Obi/Qui Gon.

Now it goes like this: first Maul shows his first blade, like a normal lightsaber. Then cut to Obi and Qui Gon. THEN cut to Darth Maul showing the second blade. I think that "mine is bigger than yours" joke always works. What do you think? Maybe some editors already did that?

Someone told me to bring back the second shot of Vader escaping the Death Star on ANH (the one where he is alone in space) to the very end of the episode, after the medals ceremony. I think it's a good idea.

I'll also edit minor shots of speaking characters for a clearer understanding about who talk, and to whom. I will also add more characters names inside the dialogue. I know sometimes it sounds too formal, but some reviewers express difficulties to understand who speaks from time to time.

I like the ideas with Maul and Vader beng shown after the medal ceremony. However, I would not add any character names in the dialogue cards unless you plan to do it with every single card. The people that complain that they don't know who is speaking just don't know the movies well enough and should probably watch the originals a few more times. ;) If you start adding things like that, especially just to a few cards here and there, it's going to start feeling like you're holding people's hands to help them "get it." I think it's a bad idea. If you look at old silent films, they never had to resort to this. Don't get pushed into doing something that might look odd just because a few people don't "get it." ;)

Your first idea of "edit minor shots of speaking characters for a clearer understanding about who talk, and to whom" is all that is needed. And I don't think it's needed at all! To be quite honest, I barely know the PT compared to the OT and I never had a problem understanding who was talking to who.

However, I would not add any character names in the dialogue cards unless you plan to do it with every single card.

Well, in fact I was thinking more of lines like:

 -"What's the situation, Captain?"

-"All communications are cut, Madam."

rather than:

Amidala -"What's the situation?"

Panaka-"All communication are cut".

So it's not really always adding the "names" of the characters before the lines (this I don't want, for various reasons), but giving hints about who is talking inside the sentences. There are already lots of lines like this in my edit, I just want to add a few more at some point. But just a few, really.

But maybe some subtle new editing will do enough.

I can't even remember the last time  I was this pumped for a fan edit. This looks like it's gonna be awesome!

Well, okay, so maybe I CAN remember the last time I was excited for a fan edit. Still, it doesn't change the fact that I'm FUCKING PUMPED FOR THIS EDIT!

:P

Then again, one of the reasons I was so excited about SotDS was because I contributed a voice-over for it.....almost three years ago..... :P

Thanks for the support! I finaly find why there was a shaking picture problem using some filter on my premiere pro 2 : it's because I worked with the low quality preview render to make my video flow faster. Now I use the better quality preview and all the problems are magicaly gone (so it was just a preview problem). The "new camera movements" give a new dynamic to a great number of shots. I'm very pleased with the result.

I hope to finish episode 1 by next week. Then it will take less time to do the other parts because I guess the learning process is over. For the text cards I just stretch them to fit 4:3. I think it looks okay.

I may share video samples to have some feedback this week end, before doing the other episodes.

Okay, I will see for the dirty audio sample. I still have to finish to correct another problem with the new 4:3 cropping but now I know how to do it.

I will fully use the old cinema filter via virtualdub, so there will also be little white noise on the picture (unlike my previous video samples). The only thing that bugs me is that through virtualdub I can't really control the "projector like" brightness vibration (it's "on" or "off") and I think it's too much. It's nice a couple of minutes but then it's getting boring. Maybe I will render a video of that "brightness vibration" alone, and use it as a layer on premiere pro 2, so I will control the % of it.

Almost there...

I'd like to see them released episode-by-episode...

...but then again I'm HIGHLY anticipating this.

Once the first is done, the rest should be ready shortly afterwards anyway, because he'll have learned so much. Besides, when the entire PT and OT will each fit on a disc, releasing them individually would be a ton of extra time [and bandwidth, no matter what format was used] for him to deal with... Think of how fast the original versions came out, one after the other.

Having said that, I know you're HIGHLY anticipating them. Haha. :) So am I.

Okay, here is a new video sample: 42 seconds, 51M.

4:3, with all old filters and dirty mono sound.

edit:

I will just change the text cards a bit with more omni directional lightning, like on the previous pictures I posted. The text itsellf should be smoother too. (in fact I just found out that a filter layer was inverted, but that's no big deal)

very cool, good work on all this..

i think the sound should be left like this,

with the good quality sound, as a different track..

whats the point of making the picture look old, when the

sound quality doesn't match it?????????? you might as well

just watch it with a good picture then..

very very nice..

Thanks.

Well, there will be both good and dirty audio tracks on the DVD. Maybe I could do a menu where it's an obligation to choose which audio you want to start the movie. That way both audio mix will be "official" and "bonus" at the same time.

Okay, episode 1 is finished. It's the same quality that my last video sample. Which is the same that my clean edit, but I must say the compression does not like much all the noises and old effects that I added. I'm quite satified with the result though. Maybe a PAL version would be better, I'll try that. Sometimes the 18 frames per second effect and the new camera movements gives a messed up feeling to the fast action scenes, but all in all it's the best I could have done. New cropping of episode 2 is well advanced and strangely it does not need as much work as EP1 (I also work a bit on my "Grindhouse Jaws" edit, to change my mind...)
