Star Wars Saga: Silent Film Edition (Released) — Page 5

I wouldn't color the cards, I'd just leave them either sepia or black all the time. They are supposed to be sort of "separate" from the movie, after all. To color them would make the transition a little smoother, which I think is a bad thing in a silent film.

As for the omnidirectional on the cards...I don't know. I think it would be better to judge if we could see a scene in action with omni versus non-omni cards.

hmmmmmmmm.

well for me,

i think it would be better if the cards are the same colors as

the scenes...to be consistent..

also the lighting looks good, if it doesnt' take too long, keep it..

as long as you can still read the cards..

Well, the thing about silent movies is that they usually didn't use the same title cards every time. To bring up Nosferatu again (just because that's the only silent movie I'm incredibly familiar with), there are several different DVD releases, and each one has a different set of title cards, so they're meant to be interchangable.

I guess basically what I'm saying here is, it's completely up to you. :P

If you want to make the cards the same colors as the scenes, then go for it, but just don't feel like it would be necessary. Personally, i thought those ones with the omnidirectional lighting looked great, especially the one in B&W, because with the light in the center it kind of looked like the light from a projector.

Yes, I'd leave them black or sepia, but keep the omnidirectional light, to simulate a projector, as Nanner said.

As for Nosferatu, I'd try and go with the original theatrical cards. I mean, DVD releases shouldn't mean anything for such a movie. ;) Everything beyond the theatrical is just whatever company is releasing it felt like doing, not the director of the movie. To that end, did the theatrical cards have color in them, or all black or what?

Thanks for your thoughts.

I think I will stay B&W but with the omnidirectional light. I still like the idea of colored cards, but finaly I think the viewers eyes will get used to the B&W cards through most of the movie, so changing their color, even within a colored scene, could be distracting. In other words: in trying to be "color consistent" the final result could be the opposite.

My curiosity has been growing, and I was wondering if it would be worth waiting for the redone version.  Thoughts?

I'll be getting the redone ones for sure, whatever that's worth. I have the originals and I am slightly biased, of course

To be perfectly honest, the next version is what I was always hoping this project would be, looks-wise. ;)

Has any thought been given to the music in the next version? Will it be the same quality, or will you use some sort of dirty mono version, maybe? Or if there's enough room, maybe add both tracks and make them selectable? Hmm?! :p

A very interesting concept on a mono mix Ripplin, but I'm of the opinion that it should be left alone.  I like having one of my all-time favorite movie scores in good quality.

i agree with adding the mono soundtrack if possible..

its weird to watch what looks like an old film, if the

sound is too good of a quality..

I was under the impression that the entire purpose of the edit was to enjoy the John Williams music in all it's wonder, not to create star wars as though it were made circa 1930's - Even though that is an interesting angle.

I think it could be fun, but ,as Ringo said, one of the purpose of the edit is to enjoy Williams score. So the "dirty mono" should indeed be available as an alternate selectable audio mix. I will try to find time to work on making the sound old. I still don't know how.

(Still I have to reframe my french clean version, cause even in french there was still some grammatical faults! lol)

Is there a way to make the film shake?  Is that included in the scripts you're currently using?  I think that could help a little.

Well, switching it to mono should be easy enough, then I know that in Nero WaveEditor (and probably other programs), there is a filter called "radio" that gives it that tinny, scratchy, inside-a-tunnel sound. Or maybe something like a single speaker phonograph or projector sound. Might want to play around with something like that.

The plugin I use can make the film shake, but I can't find a way to adjust it (it's too shaky for my taste, and it don't works on Premier Pro though). So I made a black an white video of the dust, noise, brightness vibration and vertical lines from that plugin and use it as an alpha layer on Premiere Pro. So the result does not shake at all. However, I think it could be cool to find a way to have some shake, but not during all the movie.

I'll take a look at it.

Yeah, or instead of shaking, once in a while you could make the picture roll up a bit, then drop back down suddenly. Know what I mean? Like, the movie still plays, but the picture suddenly crawls up an inch or two, then drops back down to normal after a few seconds. Anyway, keep up the good work. :)

That audio clip is very good! I wouldn't do much more with that. It's mono and it has a consistent crackle to it. (which shows up a lot when it gets quiet, which is nice) To do much more could get into 'overboard' territory. ;) Maybe a bit of a 'playing inside a tin can' effect, but not much more.

Agree.

I will share soon a short video (without sound for now) of the Obi/Maul's duel. I added a 18 fps filter, and I must say it looks good!

But god it takes time to render with all these filters! If I want to do an average 2 pass encoding, it takes almost 1 minute per second...

This is a 8M, PCM Wave file with a dirty mono mix, done with nero wave editor with the "re-analog" filter:

 sounds good to me...

i think that people are confusing 'silent movies' which had live music,

with 'old films' which didn't have very good sound..

why would the sound quality be CD standard then? that's what makes it confusing..

having the old sound matches the picture quality...

if you want good picture quality and sound, then i'm not sure what this would be

called... you could just turn off the color in the originals,

and make them black and white to achieve that effect..

Wow, not only is that first clip a good looking test - it also shows how the demise of a certain someone SHOULD have gone ;)
