Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (theatrical film for 2023) - a general discussion thread

The next Star Wars feature film will be Rogue Squadron — directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman franchise). The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.

“It’s been a lifelong dream as a filmmaker to one day make a great fighter pilot film,” said Jenkins. “As the daughter of a great fighter pilot myself, some of the best memories of my life are of seeing my father’s squadron take off in their F4s every morning, and hearing and feeling the awe-inspiring power and grace. When he passed away in service to this country it ignited a burning desire to one day channel all of those emotions into one great film. When the perfect story arrived in combination with another true love of mine, the incomparable world of Star Wars, I knew I’d finally found my next film. I’m extremely honored and excited to take it on, and grateful to Lucasfilm, Disney, and the fans for extending that thrill to me.”

“Patty has established herself as one of the top directors working in the film industry today,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “She’s a visionary who knows how to strike the balance between action and heart, and I can’t wait to see what she does in the Star Wars galaxy.”

"Pleasure’s fun. It’s great, but you can’t keep it going forever; just accept the fact that it’s here and it’s gone, and maybe then again, it will come back, and you’ll get to do it again. Joy lasts forever. Pleasure is purely self-centered. It’s all about your pleasure: it’s about you. It’s a selfish, self-centered emotion, that is created by a self-centered motive of greed. Joy is compassion. Joy is giving yourself to somebody else, or something else. And it’s a kind of thing that is, in its subtlety and lowness, much more powerful than pleasure. You get hung up on pleasure; you’re doomed. If you pursue joy; you will find everlasting happiness.” - George Lucas

When do you guys think this will take place? I’m thinking this is going to be during the galactic civil war.

I really didn’t expect this to be post-TROS. Interesting one. It’s in good hands anyway, and I’m glad we’re getting more Star Wars features.

I believe this movie was originally rumored to be released in 2020 when they hadn’t figured out what the first two spinoffs would be. There was a timeline of film’s rumored and this was one of them.

Post-TROS?
Huh. That’s disappointing, but I guess they really really really didn’t want to recast Wedge

How can it be after though… I don’t get it.

Wait, isn’t it during the original trilogy?!

“future era of the galaxy,” according to Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy.

Was this literal or talking about the new era of content?

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

It’s about a new generation of the rogue squadron. Not the original generation.

But in this canon and this time period there is no Rebellion or Rogue Squadron at all? Why isn’t it set during the Mandalorian?

Disney doesn’t want to admit they screwed up with their sequel trilogy. If they set EVERYTHING in The Mandalorian timeframe they would be admitting no one cares about the sequel timeframe. I feel placing Rogue Squadron post-TROS was forced by a need for content in that time.

The Skywalker Saga:
I / II / III / IV / V / VI / VII / VIII / IX
This is the way.

SOURCE?!! Who said that Rogue Squadron is post TROS? And why the logo and announcement video uses a rebellion era T-65 X-wing?

Interesting, but I really don’t care about post-TROS era if that is indeed true.

I love that Patty Jenkins is inspired to make this from her childhood experiences watching her father, a fighter pilot, and being around that environment. I also like that it is after TRoS because everything is unknown. Anything can happen to anyone.

Yeah…unless it’s a hundred years after. I’m not interested in a New New republic and a New New jedi order. Let the ST die…kill it if you have to.

Yes exactly! While the New Republic era is interesting and all, there is already going to be enough material about that… I want to see what happens next.

Also, I hope that all this talk of it being post-TROS is not based on just that one sentence

reylo?

I hope that turns out to be inaccurate, because if we just got to see new Rebellion defeat the new Empire in order to establish the new New Republic with the help of new Rogue Squadron, I don’t think it could possibly get any more ridiculous than that.

Seriously, how is the name “Rogue Squadron” even relevant 40 years after the event that gave it its name? Wouldn’t it be more appropriate to have a “Skywalker Squadron”? Or “Ackbar Squadron”?

Yeah I really hope the “future era” doesn’t mean in-universe, but the future of the actual franchise. I’d like it if it took place during the VI-VII interlude but then it may tread a similar ground to Rangers of the New Republic.

I feel like Rangers might be a smaller story set in the Outer Rim, if it is indeed supposed to be connected to the Mandalorian. On the other hand, Rogue Squadron could possibly serve the same purpose as the original X-Wing book series. Those revolved around mostly new characters and depicted some key events in the early years of the New Republic, including the capture of Coruscant. That could still work if it is supposed to be set after TROS, but I really hope it isn’t.

I want to hear about casting. Which actress are they choosing to play Rogue Leader.
