Some movies are mixed with a discreet rear center channel and some are matrixed.  It just depends. I believe all three of the prequels were mixed in Dolby digital EX which is matrixed from the surround channels.

A-man -- You can't just load an avi into vegas and expect seperate audio channels.  You have to demux the vob and then split the ac3 file into six seperate waves.  It's really pretty simple and full proof. I've never had it fail.

I did that before but it's a pain to have to edit it all. Unless, is there a way to lock audio tracks to a video so whenever I move it or edit a video, the audio reacts accordingly?

Yeah there is.... At least there is in Vegas and Premiere... What are you editing on?

Dude,  buy a book on vegas!  It will be the best $30 you've ever spent.  Grouping tracks is as easy as pushing a button.  No wonder your having so much trouble if you didn't take the time to learn the software first.

It's "Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0". How do I lock tracks together!?

Select the tracks you want to "group" together and press "G".

Hey wait, I've got AVI's that are already AC3 encoded. Just random files work fine, it's just my ripped movies (SW:R, AOTC, ROTS, Wall-E, Batman Begins etc) that the audio won't come out while using Sony Vegas. Like I'm getting NOTHING. Guys my final answer is this, if I can't get the audio to work in surround sound with Vegas when it's already encoded, then I'll just convert it to 2.1 and pan it. As I said before, I'll be coming back to redo these when Ady has finished his edits in 1080p or if I can upconvert what I need very well and it will be edited in 7.1. Again, you're still getting the film in 5.1 just not the PERFECT quality sound. It won't be very noticeable.

EDIT: I'm trying MANY alternatives here. I found out that it can BARELY support 5.1 encoded videos so I'll just rip the audio from the video again. Damn this is so annoying. My computer is gonna be ripping and converting for a week, ahahaha

Did you try the method I explained to you a few months ago? Seriously dude it's not that hard. IF you do it the way I explained you end up with six wav files. It doesn't get any easier than that to edit with. You can still use the xvid encoded video files.

I did that, and then my hardrive whent berzerk a while after, and I lost everything. I got the hardrive replaced and now I have to start over. I think the main reason why I didn't want to do it anymore was because of the fact that I was just so frustrated. I've just decided to do that same method again it's just that I'm gonna be ripping and converting for like a week. Editing shouldn't take too long I don't think because I've got the whole layout and a large selection of music.

I just made I think my final edits to the outline on the first page. I got rid of the Kamino Clone conspiracy crap, Tyranus's long and unnecessary monologue is also cut, Jango/Boba Fett is only in a breef seen from afar. So this is a short cameo and we know Obi-Wan is persuing him but he gets apprehended. I'm going to leave it open so he can just be another Mandalorian Inspired Bounty Hunter, he could be Jango and he could be Boba. Regardless, the bounty hunter doesn't lose his head. Also, C3PO will not be in the flashbacks. Maybe in the background, but it is never said to be him. Consider it a foreshadowing and that's it.

Quick Update: I'm still working ladies and gents. And I've been getting PMs of people asking if they can donate to the project. At the moment I don't need anything, but maybe later for discs and postage. But at the moment, I've got sufficient funds.

Well, I finished mine, viewed it, and found a glitch in the video... Unfortunately when I went back to fix it my external drive screwed up, and now my PC doesn't recognize it. Can't work without it, and I refuse to release an inferior version of what I've been working on.

I also want to mention this has been a complicated edit. I gave up on alternate music cues because of the way SW films are mixed...And While I think I discovered an interesting way to make it work, again, I refuse to release it until it's fixed.

Tj, and Info, I also want to say man I feel your pain. This is no simple project.

Hope things go well for both of you. It really is an ambitious project, innit? ;) And I know I'll be sharing them with others in the future, as I have been for the past few years with all the other great projects that have come out of this site. :)

After much consideration and meditation, I've decided I'll be changing most of the music from the films. This isn't a "ORIGINAL!!!! OMGZ!" project. It's a reinvention, a rebirth. A Renascence. So that said, I've got gigs upon gigs of music selections. A lot of the music will be from Hans Zimmer and there will also be music from Immediate Music aswell as some music from a few video games.

Have you made any progress on this facet of the project?

I'd like to know as well... That was the biggest headache.

Is anybody that's currently working on this project mixing with vegas in 5.1?

Cool, but what I'm asking is are you guys mixing in real-time?  A surround sound system hooked up to your computer?  I have mixed both ways with Vegas and if your mixing through headphones or a 2-channel system it sounds ok until you render it and play it back through a decent surround system.  It tends to fall apart then.  In a matter of speaking.

Just curious.
