Hey guys,

I know it's not related to the edit (or any edit for that matter) but I could really use the community's help! I have a Media project through facebook for my College Final, and I need to generate a lot of discussion about violence in media. I need lots of people to join and post comments!!!

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/home.php?sk=group_147851531931374

I know it's way off topic, but I REALLY need as much support as I can get! Thanks!

I still need to record my audio track before I release it. (By the way, I found a bit of a delay in the video track which I fixed and need to re-render - didn't catch it until I got that new video card).

I got some bad news and some good news (and some social news if you want it).

Bad news is, I won't be doing the audio commentary, also I need to re-render the video (as mentioned in the last post) to fix a bit of a delay in the first few video tracks).

Good news is, I'm working on the trailer for Project: Lightshow and I'll render it tonight.

Social news is, I got my marks back and have a 4.0 GPA but I got a call from work today and I lost my job.

Sorry about your bad news, A-man. Hope you find something else really soon.

Still looking forward to this edit. When do you see a release happening?

Considering I'm now out of a job, I think it won't be long. The trailer is almost done. I just need to get the title cards prepped.

Afterwords, I need to re-render the video file.

Reload it into the DVD and update the Special Features with the trailer.

Then burn and ship it to Ripplin.

Then when Ripplin has time he'll upload it.

Is this for real? Doing a Tron Edit?

Did you see the Daft Punk's video clip Derezed? They used CG to replicate the old feeling of tron with the colors and all. Check it if you are thinking making a serious one :D

Nice trailer tho i m expecting heavy FX work if you are into it :D

Yeah I saw that one. I wouldn't go that far.

See the reason the grids are so different is because they're different systems, so I wont be doing heavy CG work. However, I am in talks with a few people for a new title sequence. Most of the work I am doing are a redoing the effect where Flynn is sucked into the grid and adjusting lighting/colour as well as up dating sound effects and using music similar to as well as directly from Tron: Legacy. I've made a thread over in the Non-Star Wars Edits forums.

In news related to the edit:

I've finished the render - I just need to burn them and ship them out. Ripplin, you can expect the DVD before February - probably Mid-January.

Same here. Sort of mixed feelings, but almost overwhelming curiosity. If you plan on doing this, like vaderios said, you better be ready to pull some serious CG work out of your sleeve ;)

I'm not doing heavy CGI work - that's like Lucas including heavy CGI in the OT - only in this case there is a story telling reason why it doesn't look so updated, the older grid was more primitive.

And I didn't expect it to blow you away, I just wanted to leave the announcement of my next edit for the DVD release of this.

Done.

In terms of the digital copy, here's what we're looking at:

Video: 720x480, 3712kbps Data Rate, 4000 bitrate, 23 frames per second

Audio: Stereo, 44Khz sample rate, 195 kbps bitrate

The reason I chose that is because all my digital copies are at those settings. It's the smallest file size, and even Mac's can play WMV through VLC or even quicktime (with Flip4Mac).

Does anyone know how to add non-dvd files to a DVD Film? (If I want to add the labels and digital copy to the special features disc)

So wait, you create the AUDIO and VIDEO_TS folders using Architect, and then you burn it using another program with the additional folder? Would I burn it as "DVD DataDisc" and drag in the AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS and DVDRom folders and click Burn?

You'd want to burn it as a "DVD video disc," actually. As you probably already know, a DVD video disc is essentially a data disc, but with its structure altered appropriately (and specific files in specific folders created in a specific way) in order to be used with DVD players, thus you can include extra folders as long as they don't interfere with the *_TS folders (and if they fit on the disc!).  The computer will see it as a data disc, and you can access the extra folders as you would any other disc (commercial discs are the same, though the data files in the VIDEO_TS folder are copy-protected).

Some programs need to be explicitly told to burn a DVD video disc, but ImgBurn -- one of the best out there for burning discs and creating ISO files (particularly for dual layer DVDs) -- will notice that you're burning a VIDEO_TS folder and automatically make the appropriate adjustments to create a proper DVD video disc.  (I think it'll even create an empty AUDIO_TS folder if you don't include one, but I'm not certain about that.)  Just add the folders, click the fancy "write" icon, and your disc (or ISO image) will be created with no muss or fuss.

FWIW, I use ImgBurn for everything, as its author has spent years writing and perfecting burning software (I believe he used to be the author of DVD Decrypter; ImgBurn is a spin-off of that now-defunct software).  I never rely on any software's built-in burning functions (including DVD Architect, which I also use) because ImgBurn just works.  That's about the highest compliment you can pay any software application, really.

I mean if it's already authored - if I have those three separate folders ready to go (via DVD Architect), then theoretically I should just be able to open Nero, click Data DVD and drag and drop the VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS and DVDROM folders and click burn.

The other thing is that the file layout of DVD Video versus DVD Data discs is relevant.  Block sizes, IFO/BUP gaps, file placement, etc. are very important with video discs, so much so that many DVD players will refuse to play burned discs if they aren't just right (which is why you can't simply burn the disc as DVD Data).  Authoring programs simply create the necessary and compliant files; it's the burning process that does the job of writing those files in a way that's compatible with the DVD Video spec.

Fortunately, ImgBurn takes care of all that for you.  It'll take your already authored folders, combine them with your specified DVD-ROM folders, and create a DVD Video disc that's totally compliant and ready to go.  (Nero is crap at it, even with DVD-5 discs, mainly because it doesn't do the IFO/BUP gaps and block sizes correctly.  You're just as likely to get a coaster with Nero as you will a usable video disc.)  Given that, and the points raised by Adywan, you've made the right choice in going with ImgBurn.

Alright, sounds good. I'm in Toronto right now for all the New Years buzz, so it'll have to wait til I get back.
