Star Wars Prologue - Epic Prequel Edit (Released) — Page 4

I'm pretty good at editing myself.
This Prologue idea has kind of got me a bit psyched up about the prequels which I thought would never happen.

Sometimes showing an actual example is better than trying to explain something verbally.
I've never thought about doing a re-edit of any movie before but I decided to make a few re-edits myself help give some examples of some good ideas. I downloaded a few clips off of You tube and did these last night on Sony Vegas , took about an hour.
Sorry if the music soundtrack jumps sometimes but I was only using a mono track.

Phantom Menace: Obi-wan makes a quick job of Maul
I made a quick clip of Obiwan killing Maul quickly, basically deleting the un-cliffhanger of Obiwan dangling precariously. I also think Qui-gon would have realistically been dead by the time the movie finally gets back to him. So its better to make Ob1 kill Maul quickly.

Sith: Re-edited Balcony scene with Padme and Obi-wan
I basically cut bad dialogue and bad acting of Padme and rearranged the scene so OB1 doesn't answer instead gives a telling stare when she asks if he's going to kill Anakin. I thinks its more dramatic that way.

Sith: Dialogue re-edit before Anakin & Obiwan Duel
I hate to toot my horn here but I really like what I did here. I think this shows that you can remove about HALF of the dialogue from a scene in a prequel movie and still have the scene make sense and come across better than before. Basically Padme doesn't whimper like a dying puppy throughout the whole scene anymore and Anakin comes across as meaner and more deranged, filled with the dark side. (Oh, and doesn't say stupid things either.)
You can see the way the scene was before here: Mustafar scene

Let me know if u like how they turned out.

I'm taking a look at your tweaked clips now Lando - I'm really liking the obi/maul duel. It needs a bit of a tidy and the green saber would have to be changed to blue at the end there but overall that's pretty good. You may well be onto something here.

Thanks Ringo. If I took more time it would have been better & yeah, the saber would need to be re-rotoscoped at the end. I just saw some of the re-edits darkhelmet did in his version of Sith there is good stuff there you should look at Anti-Matter.

Anti-matter
I also thought that with some clever editing the gungans can be cut out all together. When Amidala decides to go back to Naboo instead of her asking for the gungans for help you can just cut to the part when she explains her plan to enter the palace thru the secret passage on the waterfall side. Her main goal can be to simply capture the Viceroy while the only battle that takes place is the space battle at the Fed. ship while the Jedi deal with Maul and her team enter the palace. Simply cut out all the gungan stuff and delete all references to the gungans. I saw TPM the other day and it can be possible.

I also had this idea as well, I was thinking if instead of having to see any of those excruciating "intimate scenes" between Padme and Anakin, why not simply make it look as they are already involved by the time Anakin is a young man? What i mean is, after the PTM section of the Prologue is over go back to tatoine and show Anakin as a boy and simply use a "fade" transition on tatoine and fade to him as a young man. That way there is no need for anymore text on the screen to denote the passage of time. You can fade to the time him and Padme are on tatoine perhaps at the Lars' homested looking for Shmi. Remove all the "My Jedi protector" nonsense and all the crap scenes between them on Naboo and just make it look like they are already involved and have been for years during the time after the liberation of naboo in TPM. Maybe even with some clever editing make it look like Anakin was living with the Lars all along... this compliments your idea of leaving boy Anakin on Tatoine. Then at the end of AOTC section, they marry. The only kissing scene that should even stay should be the one on Geonosis cutting out "...been dying a little bit each day since I saw you" *cringe* of course.

I agree, which is precisely why the fades are there. In each case, I feel the type and length of the fade is adequate. Granted, it is possible that I have watched this footage too often and that I am missing the novelty of the edit--or maybe you were watching with some biases that impacted your initial perceptions. We'll see what happens when more people watch.

I am reasonable. If dozens of people have the same impression or interpretation that something isn't working, then I will re-visit the material and try to (a) appreciate the problem myself, and (b) devise a creative solution.

I think I know why the fades throw me off: it's the stylistic difference from the originals. GL has never used a fade-to-black, as far as I can recall. Instead he uses wipes, crossfades, etc. Heck, I think jump cuts can be fantastic for the passage of time. A few of those might work better. I suppose it's not only the fact of the stylistic differences, but also because there are so many. Your explanations would work for any one of the ftb's you explained, but to have three of them in as many minutes and a fourth only three and a half minutes later seems quite overkill. I know I'm sorta resurrecting the thing, and I'm sorry if you dealt with this already and I missed seeing it earlier. No pressure of course, just all the fade to blacks make it seem like a tv show going to commercial.

Otherwise, this looks really really great. Kudos.

The first movie has 2 fade-to-blacks: when the droids are bought, and when Luke and 3p0 wait until morning to look for R2.

The fade@18m (2nd emperor address) has been changed to a diagonal wipe (bottom-right to top-left), triggered after Emperor Palpatine raises his arms--so the wipe movement is congruent with the object flow.

I would be concerned that a simple cut (what you call a jump cut) will degrade--rather than improve--the two transitions that flank the Yoda-Sidious duel sequence. I don't mean to argue that FTB is the best device here; rather, I cannot yet imagine a satisfactory alternative.

You may very well be correct.

Sorry if I came on a little too critical or demanding.

What program do you use for video editing, Anti-Matter? How did you rip the various DVDs?

The teaser trailer is now up on YouTube. If you like it, I suggest spending the extra 10 minutes and DL'ing the MQ version for better picture and sound (see title post for links).

I am still re-working the short, Naboo forest scene (when Qui-gon and Obi-wan meet up). The Prologue version of this scene will show one droid attack (there are two droid attacks in the original), and it will include new firing effects that are *missing* from the original movie. [I will explain the discrepancy in a later post, but you are encouraged to pull out your EP1 DVD and try to discover it yourself ] Of course, the forest sequence is also being re-directed and rotoscoped to remove JarJar.

The end of the forest sequence already appears in the aforementioned trailer.

Anti-Matter,

THAT was incredible. Removing Jar-Jar like you did was a stroke of Genious and I still can't believe you were able to do it. I am looking forward to your edit more than ever. I love the editing choices and tone of your trailer, and I'm hoping your final edit will be just as good. Keep up the good work.

Personally I think it's bad etiquette to remove the first post from a thread with eighty-something replies.

What does "make better use of available web resources" mean exactly?

Yeah, and some hint as to where this is being moved TO would be nice.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

So what does "This project is being moved to make better use of available web resources" mean then? I really can't see why you would want to move this project from here. Without the guys here i wouldn't have been able to accomplish half of what i did with "Revisited". Maybe a better explanation would be nice, especially when so many here have already had an input into this project since you opened this thread.

Of course; but I posted the "movING" announcement less than 24 hours ago. It will take some time to ready all the assets and information. There are a few members who have a genuine interest in this project, and I know who they are.

The homerism and juvenile mob mentality will stay here, though. My original discretion turned out to be correct, and I have no intention of going out of my way to make a public announcement. Thanks, but no thanks!

Note to all : Don't stir up controversy where none exists--particularly in a thread to which you've previously contributed NOTHING. The false pretense is transparent.

I am mildly amused at your efforts to believe that "this project is being moved" means "please hijack this thread with rude (OBtwosy) and presumptuous (Adywan) comments," but don't go overboard. The project is being moved for the benefit of the project (and, hopefully, my time). It's not as bad or important as, say, the Beatles breaking up.

Who is stirring up controversy? I see no evidence of that. And why was my post being presumptuous? From your last statement you obviously want to keep you edit to a select few, and that is your choice. All in was saying is that you would benefit from the input of most from here, both good and bad. There was also no "false pretence" in my concern. Just because members haven't posted in this thread doesn't mean they don't have a genuine interest in your project. I, for one, have been busy with my own project, but that doesn't mean that this project wasn't of interest to me.

I see that you joined in December so you may not have seen all the projects announced, get people interested and contribute, only to have the member who started the project suddenly say they've had enough and we will never see the project ( zeigfried & remixerboss anyone?) but usually no explanation as to why.

Looking through all the posts in your thread i see no evidence of the "juvenile mob mentality" you mention. I was just curious why you would want to move the project and asked a simple question, so why the hostility?

Anti-Matter,

I really appreciate your efforts in this project and understand how difficult and time consuming it must be to do what you're doing. If you don't want to discuss it on these boards anymore please send me a PM to its new location so I can follow you there.

Good luck with the project.

I'm looking into several blog options, which will obviate the need to maintain discussion on one server, while using other servers for clips and images. [Chronicling a project at originaltrilogy.com is inherently awkward in this respect.] Localizing ALL content--for the benefit of the author and reader--is the way to go, IMO. The blog approach may also help promote discussion, because the "thread" would be comments to more focused and separate topics within the larger project.

You need only survey some of the threads here to see why a fresh approach is needed. A simple face lift won't change much.

I'll be in touch, Lando :)

You are missing (or ignoring) the obvious. The sequence of unsolicited trashing after post #88 is entirely from people with ZERO contributions to the project. Such people are trolls. There is otherwise no problem with this thread or its participants.

I found an old, educational video that speaks to my original point in a way that you might understand.

Moth3r, Erikstormtrooper, and Adywan, you are all trolls, appearently. You are also lemmings who have contributed nothing, ZERO, ZILCH!

All three of you have engaged in a blantant display of unsolicited trashing and you all disgust me!

Can you believe a mod would say something so cruel and unsolicited as:

So, PM me as to where you are off to Anti-Matter, I can't stand to be around this bunch of lemmings anylonger. Those unsoliciters with their homerisms, juvenile mob mentality, and their presumptuousness can all go to hell for all I care! I hereby leave OT.com forever.
