I have a program called "audio DVD creator" that allows you to put music files onto a DVD (a simple picture with the track name is what you see on screen) and allows you to make the disc with either PCM or ac3 audio, depending on how much music you want on the DVD.

The program comes with a tool that can make a six channel WAV out of an ac3 file.

aside from that, I don't typically encode an ac3 until I've finished the individual channel editing, because of the hassle involved with changing it back.

Heres my first real test. As you were saying, I should try to get everything mixed right before I export.

Right now, I'm still toying with it. I have things pretty well mixed, but cross fades between cues don't work too well yet so

It's actually more of an "all channel stereo" effect, I assume created using the surround/pan effect in Vegas. Creating a discrete surround mix out of stereo depends entirely on the program you are using and the stereo recording mix. If there's a lot of monaural instrument placement, you'll get a more discrete surround effect.

I had made an imperial march, but I decided if I wanted to do that again, I would just re-rip it from the 5.1 of the extra disc in the Episode III set... the musical journey.

And it's not just a stereo effect. AC3 also adds a dampening and a slight amount of clarity to the sound... it removes unneccesary sound while focusing on what is audible

Problem is you would have to remove the dialogue from it and replace it with the stereo track, which doesn't make any real difference because that DVD is pretty much all upmixed from stereo anyway, which is why I thought that Musical Journey DVD was a bit of a letdown. It's a shame because they could have remixed it from the original masters like the A New Hope score but they didn't.

I made that file just as an example of the kind of upmixing I do. Normally I wouldn't have done that particular piece of music but it was a short enough example from Star Wars, just to keep it relevant to the thread.

You seem to know what youre talking about so I won't be too mean ;-) :-p

...but the Musical Journey is mixed from the original masters. Try comparing anything from Empire to how its heard on the Musical Journey.

It's all been freshly mixed for the effort. I mean, especially check out The Asteroid Field... no mix has ever presented it that way...
I know this becuase thats how I got cleaner mixes of a few tracks for my complete edit... INCLUDING the Imperial March. just remove the talking and echo and it was really nice... ESPCAILLY compared the tragedy that is the SE

Sorry to be a pain, but could you clarify which scores have been redone recently? I don't want to redownload Star Wars ones I already have if they're the same, but if they're in better quality I'll grab them. This goes for your non-SW score edits too.

I havn't done anything recently.

The most recent edit was from a few months but never got posted and that was Space Camp...

before that was Episode II.

I plan to redo episode I... so you can't download that anyways lol...

My new edits that are coming out are a redo of Family Plot, TOD, and eventually Episode I

GoodMusician: If recall correctly, you fairly recently put together an Episode III score that you found surprisingly solid after scouring for the best possible sources. If you can upload that to your site or to PSYCHO_DAYV's in FLAC files, please let us know. I have the Episode II set you put together and it's excellent, it would be great to hear an Episode III set. :)

So I was listening to the music to Empire at War today and you know what I realized...

 

There's an alternate take of "Battle of Hoth 2" in the game... it was my understanding that the developers denied that any new music would be present in the game because they were simply ripping from the albums but this MUST NOT be true... I'm testing to see if any album has this alternate but I doubt it.

Will keep you all posted on any changes or additions to the set.

 

EDIT:

 

It would seem that the Album has the correct version (with an edit that is very audible), where as the SE uses an incorrect take... (and no edit) lol... interesting...

Because I'm not sure what I want to do yet... and I have to do a few things before I can post them... some fixes to files and such...

I thank you for the offer but I havn't decided what I'm going to do because Im not sure what needs to be done yet.
