Star Wars Pan Scan — Page 6

Every movie should be released in widescreen. Why do people want to miss 50% of the movie?

All this "aspect rations" things is too confusing, there should be a standart aspect ratio, and that's it.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

No a filmmaker should have the right to choose the aspect he shoots it in. No standard ratio. I would only want to watch the movie in the aspect the movie was filmed in whichever it is. Also with Star Wars you are missing 43% of the movie but still enough to make Pan Scan worthless.

I agree, Jimbo. That's all part of a director's license, though I am partial to the 2:35:1 ratio. It's so broad, so panoramic, so epic. Some movies (Star Wars, LOTR, Braveheart, Lawrence of Arabia) require that ratio, some don't. I've noted, though, that Steven Spielberg, who would seem like the type to use the 2:35:1 ratio uses the 1:85:1 ratio instead. A bizarre choice for films like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, but it works, and if he prefers it, that's his prerogative.
What should be made standard, Ric, is the banning of fullscreen video releases, period, though I think we all more or less agree on that.

Edit: Correction. Some phenomenal classic films were made without widescreen use (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Seven Samurai). Those obviously should be allowed to remain fullscreen.

Me I prefer the 1.78 ratio since its best for my widescreen televsion.

I would seem strange that the 2:35:1 is my favorite, since I watch a majority of my movies on either my 13" Zenith TV or my 17" Compaq monitor, yet I still love that ratio unashamedly.

2.35:1 is also my favourite ratio. I find that @ my theatre, 2.35 films are invariably easier to focus than 1.85:1 films. There are some exceptions (Van Helsing and Shrek 2 are both great-looking flat films), but most look like shite once they reach the release stage.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I'd be extreme and go for Cinerama! But 2.35:1 is perfect, too.

The trilogy was filmed in 2:35:1, wasn't it? I'm seeing them in widescreen for the first time, and I'm just curious what the ratio is on the three films.

Yes, the ratio is 2.35:1 on the OT.

This is not a suprise at all, really, but I just finished watching all three of the movies on the anamorphic DVDs, and I don't think I can ever watch Star Wars in fullscreen ever again. For years, I've had no choice, but the experience is so much richer in widescreen, obviously. I can already hear my pan and scan VHS tapes moaning sadly on the shelf.

Is it just me, or is the widescreen on the anamorphic bootleg of ESB a little off? I'm asking because it looks a bit screwed up when the opening crawl goes past, as the full line of text isn't immediately readable as soon as it comes onto the bottom of the screen. Just a nitpicky question, and I guess I asked it here since it's the whole widescreen/pan and scan thread.

All Star Wars movies were done in 2.35.

Galahad, this also happens on my laserdisc of ESB.

Although not as extreme as you make it sound.

I wasn't trying to make it sound extreme, Hal. It was just very minor, and I didn't know if I was seeing things, or the transfer to DVD had caused it to happen, or if it was something else. It's a lot better than pan and scan.

Go to http://www.anagramsite.com and type in John Kerry.

I'm John Kerry, and I certainly didn't approve THAT message.

Hal, I checked out that site. The John Kerry anagram was hysterical.

Try punching in George W. Bush. "Whose Bugger" was my personal favourite of the 355 found.
