Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released) — Page 78

Just saw the most recent sample, the big 4 part video. Wow, way to go, dark_jedi! It looks great on my monitor. The natural film grain was there, which looks the way it should, the detail was good, and I didn't notice any unusual appearance to the characters. I guess it just goes to show that if you carefully restore the video source for the 1993 DC laserdisk set, there's a lot of detail and natural color there, it just has to be made a little easier to see.

To me it looks like an ideal compromise between retaining the natural detail which is present and keeping the grain from being too heavy. The real test will be on an hdtv, so please check that out on your end. The colors look really good, too. And if no way can be found to restore them closer to the film appearance without messing up the flesh tones, then I say just go with this (which I assume is the V3 color correction settings). If you can bring back even more of the color, like the blueness to the Death Star's interior and so on, without causing other problems, then so much the better. Try a few things and see how it turns out before you decide.

Nice Work! :)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Still tinkering, now I need to remember WTF I did previously now.

also going to test out the DTS-HD MA file tomorrow, right now I have to watch some Sweeney Todd.

at least everything I am doing now is internal(within the script) no more external processing after the script, or before.

I agree about sample 1884 looking great, I still wish there was something could be done with the aliasing on R2's head and 3PO's shoulder, but I guess if that's as good as you can get it then...

I am still trying to figure that out, if you have suggestions please let me know, this is mostly g-forces script, with a few additions, if anyone knows how to strengthen the anti-aliasing part give me an example, or what I should add and try out.

also I tested the DTS-HD MA file last night and I like it a lot, very nice.

No one answered me on the commentary tracks, does this mean no one has heard them, or should I just not add it?

I don't know anything about the Gonzo or Cowclops commentaries but I remember that OCPMovie edited together a decent commentary for his ANH: Classic Edition. Would you be interested? I could upload these.

Did he do it for all 3 films? and do you know what the sources were by any chance?

That does look interesting for sure, I just wonder how well it will sync up, I will have to look into it.

Listening to some of it now, I recognise some audio from the Empire of Dreams documentary. The audio track run time is 02:01:09.

EDIT: VLC Media Player tells me a different run time so I'm not sure which is right.

Has anyone listened to the audio commentary on the Gonzo & Cowclops V2 set? are they the same? is one better than the other? I was thinking(actually someone requested) about adding one of these to the audio line up, what does everyone think? hopefully if it is wanted it won't be much to sync...

Gonzo & Cowclops both use the commentary available on the '93 Definitive Collection LD's, don't know if one of them is in better quality than the other, I think the tracks were slightly cleaned up on some preservation discs, don't know which one. Those '93 commentary tracks are intermittent though, much time between the talks.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

So in your guys opinions, are the commentary files not worth it, I did notice on the Gonzo commentary it went a long time between comments, kind of a boring commentary, thoughts?

Also does anyone else have a problem with the aliasing? I actually did not see it myself, but I don't put screen shots under the microscope either like some do, motion is how we watch these, but if it is there and bad give suggestions on HOW to get rid of it.

Actually, the aliasing is the only thing that could still do with improvement and actually in movement it's way more visible than in a still picture. But I have no idea about scripts, so I'm afraid I won't be able to offer any suggestions. Let me just add that it is amazing what you've been able to squeeze out of the GOUT, when I compared it side by side with the actual GOUT DVD, it does look like the difference between HD and DVD.

Well I am sure g-force has it in the script already, I just wonder how to maybe strengthen what is there, or I wonder do I have to add another filter into it, or maybe the aliasing was never fully treated to begin with(which I am sure this isn't the case) I just don't know, I will have to try some more things, I know there are people here that have way more experience with avisynth than I do but are not chiming in, OH well, time to catch Doctor M on AIM again, so far he has been very, very helpful.

Well this may sound funny, but I REALLY hope to figure this out soon, and hopefully when my Friend gets a break from the THX Project to get the updated subs for this, because on Tuesday the 8th, I will not be messing with this much for a while, Dragon Age II is out and I am sure that will take up quit a bit of my time.

Just my opinion but it its NOT a deal breaker for me. Its there but watching on the big screen it is hard to notice. I did notice it a lot more watching those samples on my computer....just like the color isn't going to be perfect for everybody this isnt going to be perfect for everybody too. Just my 2 cents.

I think the more audio tracks the merrier especially since you're not limited to the room of a DVD-9. I got a chance to listen to the OCPMovie Classic Edition commentary. It's got some nice interviews, mostly anecdotes about the film's production. Most of us probably know most of the information in it but overall it's still informative. Anyway, DJ, make your own judgments about it. I uploaded it at:

Well I think this is ALL I can do to this video, you have to remember that the flaws that are present on the 2006 retail Limited Edition Bonus DVD & the V3 DVD all have these same flaws, I tried to clean up the best I can, to me it really does not bother me at all, it is what it is, we can only process this video so much, I have asked for suggestions and have gotten very few to none(and when I say suggestions I mean actual filters, commands, etc.) I also think I have a pretty fair balance between the grain and noise problem now to, all scenes look pretty good, again, at least to me, this set obviously will not be for everyone, but I think it will be a great companion set to the official BD Saga release this September, well here are the links, it is only a 699 MB file and uses the 1985 Stereo LPCM audio, and for the color, I tweaked it just a little bit, but it is real close to the V3 SW color.

*Edit - If you guys do like this all I have to do is finish up the subs and then I can render this baby and move on to ESB.

It looks great, thanks.  I'm really excited to see how the next two look.

Also, I have a version of those cowclops commentaries that I created a while ago.  They're basically the '93 stereo mixes combined with the 1993 commentaries.  The movie audio fades very low when the commentary comes in, but fades up when comments are done.  They are sync'd to the GOUT, but I can't vouch for their sound quality though, as I believe they are sourced entirely from cowlops v2, which, to my knowledge, had some clipping on the audio.  I can send these to you if you're interested.

Thanks again

Is the clipping on the commentary tracks or just the other audio on the set? because if it is the other audio on the set I could care less about that LOL, or any LD set for that matter, moved past LD's.

Also did you watch the sample on your PC or your HDTV? I am hoping people will watch on their HDTV's.

But to answer your question, if the audio files are OK, I could add them into this project.

I'd gladly watch these on my HDTV, but I don't know how to get the downloaded clip from my PC to my PS3.  I tried simply playing the files off a USB flash drive, but no luck.  Do I need to burn to a DVD?

If you burn it to DVD make sure you use Imgburn write files to disc and set to UDF 2.5, then you can play the DVD in PS3 or standalone player.

Thanks DJ.  I'll try this as soon as possible.

OK anyone else check this out? I need to know what you guys think, I am putting the finishing touches on the Theatrical subs now, I think they are done, I am going to send a sample to msycamore to look at, and if he likes them, GREAT! if no one speaks up then this is the final, and I will start to render the lossless avi file for encoding, corellian77 what did you think of this latest sample?
