It's nice to see the movie without all the DVNR smearing and other weird GOUT glitches, but the image is noticeably softer, and the colors seem a little wonky in some scenes but a little more accurate in others.

And that's pretty much exactly how I expected it to look, so you've done a good job!

Though I'm not a donator and will probably never see this set, I am curious; how does the quality compare to Arnie's V8 and Dark Jedi & Segaflip's collaborative transfer of it?

Don't know, I've never seen either of these versions.

I like that you kept the CBS/FOX logo at the beginning, that was a nice touch.

Funny thing, that was a last minute addition, I did have it all done without it but changed my mind, I wanted it to be exactly like the LD, chapter stops and all.

Also when you get a chance, can you email me what you think on the other question asked?

GOUT options menu for Star Wars (Redo)

Hell. Yes. LOVE it!

Me too. Only thing I'd change in this particular one is "theatrical" crawl, since ANH was also "theatrical", only later one. IMO it would be better as Star Wars or then 1977 and 1981. Of course the 1981 isn't on V3 but just saying. :) Btw that looks pretty funny with all those tracks, haha. Not many films has that much.

If I am allowed to nitpick a little, the 1977 Dolby Stereo should also be listed as a Dolby Surround track, if you haven't encoded it in plain 2.0 stereo that is.

Example: 1977 Dolby Stereo - Dolby 2.0 Surround, this is what I call nitpicking! ;)

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Alright, well, I've received the discs in the mail.  Preliminary report (I've only skimmed a bit of SW):

- Image quality is simply awesome compared to the letterboxed GOUT.  The MKV sample is a very good indicator of the overall quality of this release.
- Subtitles are perfect!
- Chapters start slightly too early each time.  It's like the chapter stops are timed for the PAL GOUT instead of the NTSC, so while they start just fine, by the end they start about 10 seconds too early.
- There's a little bit of a blue tint to the stars in some scenes, but it's hardly noticeable, and it's nowhere near as bad as the ROTJ GOUT.
- I really wish that choosing an audio option either took you back to the main menu, or started the movie, but that's a nitpick
- I've spot-checked every audio mix at each chapter stop, and they all seem to sync perfectly

Further updates as I have them.  I will say this, though - from everything I've seen so far, this by far the definitive GOUT enhancement project, and possibly the definitive representation of the OOT on DVD.

Your updates are making me drool, Ash...
Not a good thing, 'cause my desk is over-flooding and the floor is all wet.
All I have is Ash' words to go by, but I'm getting ridiculously excited!!!

As I've said before, this is not my final version.  In fact I did this about three years ago.  Also, Dolby Stereo is the name for the original theatrical system that was used in 1977.  If that mix is indeed the theatrical stereo, then it would be Dolby Stereo.  Dolby Surround is the name for Dolby's home version.  Here's a link:

Well, sorry. I shouldn't even have commented on such a irrelevant thing. And yes, I'm fully aware of what theatrical Dolby Stereo is, hence my silly little comment, as the theatrical Dolby Stereo mix will be played on your home equipment, it will certainly be a Dolby Surround encoded track. ;)

I've been here forever, but rarely venture to the preservations/edits section.  I've been happy (well, as much as one can) with the GOUT, but this looks like a must have.  I'm totally incompetent when it comes to torrents, burning dvds, and especially usenet groups.

Would anyone be kind enough to help me figure out how to obtain this set once released?  (I'm also still interested in getting the PUggo Grande, but never got a response in that thread).

I don't know about this set, but I just sent you a PM about the Puggo Grande, canofhumdingers.

ESB:

- The hotline recordings are really cool, nice addition!
- Picture looks fantastic, as expected
- All audio tracks sync perfectly
- The chapter issue I mentioned with Star Wars is also present in Empire
- The cave scene issue from your V1 set (never got V2, so I don't know how well it was fixed for that) is simply not there at all, it looks just as good as the rest of the film

ROTJ:

- Same chapter issue
- All audio mixes sync just fine
- Picture seems a wee bit bright, but I'm thinking that's just the GOUT and I'm not remembering correctly (Jedi is the one I watch least of the trilogy, so I don't have the same frame of reference I have for the other two).
- Again, subtitles are perfect!

How are the layer breaks on the V3 set (as viewed with your DVD or BR player, not on your computer)? On the V1 set they were in different spots than the GOUT, and on V2 they were close to the GOUT but off by a bit.

Author
Time

I tried to put them where they are on the GOUT, but I am limited to what IMGBurn will do, when I watched them they were not even noticed on my player when the layer changed, I really don't know why this question is always brought up, new players should play right through smoothly.

Looking back at my response it comes off a bit more pissy than I intended.  Sorry. :)

How do I check the layer break position?  My DVD player has never skipped/paused at a layer break, it's always been 100% seamless (it's the only player I've ever used that doesn't stutter at the layer break on the old Matrix DVD).

Author
Time

That is exactly why I was wondering why it really matters anymore, most newer DVD\Blu-ray players go right through it no problem now, but like I said, I did set it to the cell that ifoedit said the GOUT LB was at, and IMGBurn did the rest.

To those who have the set, how does the image quality compare with the sw1977 DVD that was supposedly tweaked frame by frame to 720p in Photoshop? It's the DVD mentioned in this thread.

As I said on page 63, according to the sample Dark Jedi released, there is a very slight amount of rainbowing, and the detail level is just slightly lower than the V8 (but whether this is due to the hardware used or the noise reduction, I couldn't say).

The V8 suffers from a bit of chroma shifting that this v2 doesn't have, though, and there's a bit of noise if that sort of thing bothers you.

I've only seen a small, two-second clip of the Dark-Sega set, and a handful of screenshots, but I'd say the v2 looks far better.

This sounds like a great GOUT replacement. Can't wait to be able to get this (and/or donate to project)!

I believe donations are no longer being accepted... but this should hit the newsgroups, torrents, and/or Megaupload soon enough.

Problem is, no dual-layer dvd burner and rather not take the DVDShrink route if possible, would donate discs to get this and be willing to help spread the news, etc.

Unfortunately, I am in the same position, kaine23. Though, in my case, I'm planning to borrow a friend's burner, but yes, I'd rather donate.

Yeah, maybe I'll add a dual-layer burner to my "to buy" list soon, after a new dvd player. lol I hate coming into these late now, I've been gone too long.

and the sample, AMAZING!

OK I have a question for the few that actually follow this thread LOL, does anyone know of any good uprez scripts, filters, programs, etc? the reason I ask is I have been doing a bunch of sampling of different things I have come across to try and make a V3 BLU, yes that is right, a Blu, now I know there are going to be people to say that the GOUT is shit and there is NO way it will look good no matter what you do, well you know what, I say screw that, I have done quit a few samples now of upconverting on my PC and encoding and watching on my 65" HDTV, and to me it looks pretty damn good, better than I expected, now is it pristine\perfect\same as the HD files already available, HELL NO, but it does what I want it to do, it looks better than my Blu-ray player upconverting the V3 DVD, and that alone is worth it to me, also this will have a nice menu system, and it will feature ALL the extras that are on my V3 set and maybe more, plus I figure why the hell not take a stab at a Blu, GL is not going to.

ps. Have any of you guys seen some of the retail Blu-rays of older movies released recently? some look pretty damn bad, but it is still better than it's DVD counterpart, maybe not by much, but a little better.

Wishing you the best of luck with that!

WOW, a Blu-Ray set! I'd say go for it. It sounds awesome and with all the extras of the V3 (including all the audio tracks I presume), it would be a worthy release. I believe it will look better than some early Blu-Rays....

By the way, OmegaMattman had the same idea and has made a 720p AVCHD of ESB. It's mentioned on this thread. You might want to check it out.

uprez?  I wish I knew more about it.

Like I said, there is going to be people that could care less and are going to make comments that it will look like shit no matter what, I don't care, I already accomplished 1 thing I wanted to do, and that is make it look better by processing it on my PC instead of letting my Sony BDP-S350 do it on the fly, so I am already a little happy, and all my tests have been 1080p, I am actually going to try out some 720p versions now, but if I don't see much difference I am staying with 1080p, and I am so happy I just got a 1920x1080p 23" HD monitor for my PC today delivered by UPS.

So if interested in this, please by all means comment and offer suggestions, I REALLY want them, even if you think they won't help, still say them, and if you are not interested, well I know what I want to say.
