don't you think this has a pretty good chance of making a nice AVCHD project?

No. The GOUT doesn't even have enough resolution to make a nice DVD.

Rephrasing the question - suppose you have a display with 1080p native resolution. Would an AVCHD made from the GOUT stabilization script (i.e. upscaled with the EEDI2 algorithm) look any better than an anamorphic DVD from the script played on an upscaling DVD player?

(I suppose the answer is "depends on the upscaling in the player", but just interested to hear your thoughts.)

Good question M,I thought I read that doing the upconversion on your PC with a good filter combo will always produce better results than what the players can do,but I could be wrong, hell I thought I read that here somewhere, but maybe not.

either way it is a good question and I would like to know everyone's thoughts on that as well.

g-force,

I tried making the avchd file with your script and this is what I got, notice Han's hand in this screen, and overall this one looks fuzzier, pardon my choice of words I am not up on all the video lingo LOL.

I made an x264 of each of the OT films using g-force's script with the GOUT, and this discussion of different pre-synced audio mixes made me think I would love to mux these into the my OT mkvs so I could choose between the different audio mixes available. We have the Laserdisc PCMs, someone's upconverted 5.1 mix and also M0th3r's mono mix of ANH. Is that all of the alternate mixes available/worth getting hold of which sync with the GOUT?

Would anyone like to upload all of these mixes (and/or any others worth getting) to a torrent site somewhere? I'd love to have them to sync to my x264 video encodes.

Thanks

perhaps a nice compromise to 720p instead of all the way to 1080p would be the way to go?

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

That probably would be better.

These are all the mixes for ANH:

- 1977 Theatrical Mono (available through the Restored Mono Mix Project, my personal preferred mix)
- 1977 Theatrical Stereo (floating around; I have it)
- 1977 Six-Track Surround (4.2 mix shown at 70mm screenings; in-theater bootleg is available, but the mix itself is not, sadly)
- 1985 Stereo Remix (laserdisc/home video mix based on theatrical stereo.  It's floating around; I have it, but my copy is taken from the laserdiscs and isn't synchronized to the GOUT)
- 1993 Stereo Remix (laserdisc/home video mix based on 4.2 surround mix; available in heavily-compressed form on the GOUT, but uncompressed PCM copies are available from the LD's)

ESB:

- 1980 Theatrical Stereo (apparently available on laserdisc; I think Darth Mallwalker's working on making this available)
- 1980 Six-Track Surround (4.2 mix shown at 70mm screenings; sadly not available at all)
- 1985 Stereo Remix (laserdisc/home video mix based on theatrical stereo; I have no idea if anyone has this mix or not)
- 1993 Stereo Remix (laserdisc/home video mix supposedly based on 4.2 surround mix; missing a snowspeeder crash sound effect; available in heavily-compressed form on the GOUT, but uncompressed PCM copies are available from the LD's)

ROTJ:

- 1983 Theatrical Stereo (no idea if/where this is available)
- 1983 Six-Track Surround (4.2 mix shown at 70mm screenings; sadly not available at all)
- 1985 Stereo Remix (no idea if this even exists for ROTJ)
- 1993 Stereo Remix (laserdisc/home video mix that may actually just be the theatrical stereo mix; available in heavily-compressed form on the GOUT, but uncompressed PCM copies are available from the LD's)

That's what I know about the audio mixes.  I really wish more of them were available (especially the surround mixes).

Minor correction: upscaled with EEDI2 and NNEDI! My method has some of the benefit of EEDI2's ability to connect more lines than NNEDI, but making sure not to introduce "blur bubbles". And yes, in case anyone is wondering, NNEDI2 makes no difference with this method.

DJ,

looks like temporal smoothing from the original GOUT to me. Hard to tell without a screencap of the original next to it.

So are there people here interested in Xvid versions? and if so I was messin around with making them a few days ago and realized something,we usually clip off the black bars for Xvids, but I will not be able to in this case,at least not on SW and ROTJ,the Alien subs are now in the black border,so what I want to know is will this be a problem for you guys?

also still messin with possible AVCHD versions as well, but I think it might be a good idea to make them 720p as apposed to 1080p as requested, but what is the resolution of a 2.35:1 video for 720p? never messed with this reso before and have no idea what to resize the video to and what size borders to add.

I have all the #'s for standard DVD's to figure that stuff out but not for 720p & 1080p video projects.

I created 480p x264s of the OT using g-force's script. I cropped the black bars off and created an .srt file for the subtitles, which is much more versatile than burnt in subs anyway. I can send you the srt files for ANH and RotJ if you want - PM me.

If you are going MPEG-4 with these, I would recommend doing x264 encodes as this is a much better codec than XviD now, also you could put them in .mkv containers instead of .avi containers, then you can mux the .srt files into the .mkv and it will be one convenient file.

Nothing technical to add, just wanted to interject a big thanks to DJ for taking the time to put these together and make them available.  They look and sound great.

DJ, if you do decide to do AVCHD versions I for one will look forward to checking them out.

Thanks for that, but I must not be seeing what I need to see,I know that 1920x1080 is 1080HD and that 1280x720 is 720HD,but what I am asking is,let's say I make the AVCHD 720p,I know the finish size is 1280x720,but what part of that is video to make it 2.35:1,and what size are the borders?
example std. DVD 2.35:1 is 720x364(853.3 divided by 2.35) ,then addborders 0,58,0,58 encode in 16:9 and there you go,I need to know these for HD video.

like I said I know what all those dimensions are on standard DVD,just not these HD sizes.

Any movie made after 1970 in the "scope" (anamorphic) aspect ratio is actually 2.39:1, not 2.35:1 - I believe the standard was changed to make splices less apparent.  Because 2.35:1 was so ingrained in the minds of cinematographers and the like, it's still (usually) called that, even though it's really been 2.39:1 since 1970.

Some DVD cases now say 2.40:1 or 2.4:1, which is rounding up - the only DVD cover I know of that actually says 2.39:1 is Minority Report.

So has anyone watched these yet?

We would love to know what you think of them.

I watched ROTJ yesterday (mainly to get ideas for how I want to edit it), and I must say, it looks fucking fantastic.  I'm actually 99% sure I'm going to toss out my newly-created Lucasfilm and "A long time ago ... " title cards in favor of the ones on your GOUT set for my Trilogy project, since they look ... well ... pretty much perfect.  And no telecine judder!

I just wish it were easier to get rid of the blue glow that ROTJ has ...

I STILL haven't had a chance to view them on my HDTV (got a surprise visit from the Aunt & Uncle this week), but my initial impression of them is excellent.

Will report back soon.....

(EDIT)

(from another thread):

Ok, so I was able to sit down and watch SW last nite, and I'm VERY impressed with the results, DJ and g-force! You did an incredible job and you should be proud of yourselves. I don't think the GOUT could look any better than this- you seem to have utilized every last drop of available quality.

I only have a 32" HDTV so I can't speak to how this would look on a much larger set, but on my TV I was completely immersed in the film, not distracted at all by any PQ deficiencies. I like very much how the subtitles were done, as well.

I haven't watched ESB or ROTJ yet (I'll try to get to ESB tonight) but I think these are going to be my definitive versions of the OT now. I can't imagine wanting to watch the official GOUT discs at all now, or even the OCP Classic Editions which I also like very much.

On a side note- I think your discs will also make the perfect source for anyone wanting to do a hybrid GOUT/'04-DVD project.

Just for clarification- the script used for these discs stabilized the gate-weave and improved the aliasing as well (like in the PWNAGE edition)? The reason I ask is because in addition to everything else, the aliasing seems improved too.

(question answered here): http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/GOUT-image-stabilization/topic/9038/page/27/

I look forward to watching ESB and ROTJ soon- thanks again for the FANTASIC work! :-D
