Will you two (lol, I made a funny....You_Too) be using the DTS audio for the 97 upscales?  THAT would make them a very welcome addition to everything that has come before.

:)

I don't remember if the cinema DTS audio was synched to this version (TB) or some other version? Otherwise DJ will certainly try to synch it so we can have all possible options. He will probably include audio from the LD's too.

The 5.1 would be awesome too and I believe the DTS theatrical audio would be the icing on the cake for the 97 SE's.

Are you guys going to use separate artwork for the SE's?  I have the SE VCD artwork that might come in handy when deciding how to proceed even though it is the second pressing of them missing the "SE Trilogy" tag.

As I own a copy of the 5 Star DVD9 Editions, they just don't quite manage on an HD screen like they do on a CRT.  Topping the 5 Stars was always my dream and the DTS discs contain the audio for the different SE trailers as well.  I'm very excited about this as CapableMetal did the separate mono files with an LFE added just for projects like this.

I shall keep my fingers crossed.  :)  :)

The SEs look great, too. If you guys use the theatrical DTS then it would come close for me if I really should try watch those versions again after many years... Will the SEs be on BD, too?

I'm not sure on artwork but knowing DJ he probably wants to have some good looking artwork for the 97 SE's too.

And yes, they will be blu-rays, with menus and all.

Today I finished the script for ANH, and here's a couple teaser shots at full resolution:

Looks great! Well, kinda, wouldn't like to see that Jabba again... LOL

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Yeah, in my opinion (and most other people here too I think) that scene is completely unnecessary. But since this "thing" that doesn't even look like Jabba is in the 97 SE he will also be preserved! haha

You gotta preserve Georgie boys early craziness!

I find it weird though that they didn't include the original version of this scene in the blu-ray box along with the other deleted scenes.

I'm REALLY looking forward to see the final product. REALLY.

I am more than stoked for both of these. You guys are awesome

I agree. It's looking excellent, guys!

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Ok, now DJ has posted the sample again. This time it looks correct, without the chroma shift.

And don't be too hard on DJ. He was just tired of this project being compared to Harmy's, when it's obviously very different since we're working from the opposite direction. That, and he's working hard on his job, and on this and 3 other projects on his free time.

Thanks to DJ for re-uploading. I'm grabbing it this time around to sample.

Don't worry darth_ender. I don't think anyone is gonna bash you for preferring a certain version. Everyone has different taste, but I too respect Harmy greatly for putting his heart and soul into working on his version.

Anyway, the rumor might have reached you guys that we're planning to release the 97 SE counterparts of each movie along with the restored originals.

The 97 SE's will be nicely upscaled using the TB version, and have the theatrical subs included. Since the colors are pretty screwed up in the 97 SE's, there will be a slight color correction involved but don't expect wonders. And there won't be any dirt cleanup since obviously it's taking way too long just to do that on the originals.

Here's how Mos Eisley will look in ANH, a few scenes we felt needed additional color correction. Before and after:

Wow, thanks for tackling the SE too!!!! That is exactly how that shot and all of Mos Eisley should have looked on video. That pink addition should have never made it out of the mastering stage. THX mastered my butt.

You know, I still think this looks better than the tossed in TPM Jabba. Skipping the dirt cleanup is fine, because the main problem with the broadcast versions has been the smearing. I remember DJ even considering going back to possibly doing an LD cap to overcome it, but you just can't compare the resolutions at all. The DTS would be the icing on the cake if possible. I don't think it would be too much work to sync it though I don't think it's synced to anything currently. I've always wished for a definitive 97SE with all 3 mixes: Dolby, DTS and Dolby Surround.

What.

The.

Hell.

How in the hell can this be the same old GOUT we've belittled for 6 years? How?

If you look closely and scrutinize everything, it is possible to recognize that it's still our old friend GOUT in there: smearing, frozen grain, edge halos and all. But that's only if you look for it. It is extremely easy to forget all about the pitfalls of GOUT and sink back into what has become our basic SW reference, the DC master but at a level never before seen.

Just wow. A mammoth undertaking at polishing an absolute turd.

Thank you captainsolo, and everybody else for all nice comments. Both me and DJ are happy to hear you're excited about this!

About 97 SE: DJ confirmed that we will include

Laserdisc PCM
Dolby Digital 2.0
Dolby Digital 5.1
Cinema DTS 5.1

And when I talked about the color correction being minor with the exception of Mos Eisley, here's an example that shows it:

Basically all three movies will be balanced a bit better, so they won't look as blue/cyan as a lot of scenes do in the raw TB broadcast.

Author
Time

That doesn't seem minor... and I mean that in a good way.

Thank you!

But I think why I called it minor is because if you're only watching our version without anything to compare with, one would still think some scenes are too cyan or too blue and such things, at least I still get that feeling. But when comparing it really does look a lot better, in all three movies.

Really excited for this!  Got a chance to watch the 11 minute clip last night, I'll finally be able to put away my GOUT DVDs for good.  Seems like you guys are nearing the end! All the work is greatly appreciated.

Actually, we're only halfway through the first film when it comes to the cleanup.

I'm sorry to say this but it takes a huge amount of time to work on the cleanup of bad frames. This is something that me and DJ might have to discuss, because this autumn things have been moving slowly, both because it takes so much time to actually work on it, and also because I've had some health problems that have prevented me from working on it. I went through two surgeries the last couple months, and while things are almost back to normal now, I still think if we keep doing this project the way we have, it might take us years to finish all three.

Even though SW has many frames with dirt, glue marks, flashes and all, it's nothing compared to ESB. ESB has thousands and thousands of them and it's not only single frames, because it's the GOUT we're talking about. Glue marks and such things are smeared into the frames before or after so it all usually needs cleanup in more than one frame.

In the near future I think I'm gonna discuss with DJ if we should only clean up the color errors, like Tie lasers being yellow, the Falcon's laser being green etc, and leave the rest as it is. After all, the glue marks are from the negative, and many of the dirt marks and flashes are from the interpositive, so a lot of it was seen like that in the cinema too!

We'll see how it turns out but either way, the GOUT have never looked better, remember that. :)

My vote is that you guys use your discretion and don't get burned out (aka probably slow down on the individual frame cleanup). But I'm just one person. More importantly, though, I hope you're doing alright! I had some surgery about a year ago. Not fun stuff.

As you said, no matter what you guys end up doing, the GOUT will have never looked this good, so I take that as a win. Simple as that. You guys are doing incredible work

I'm doing alright, thanks. And the reason we work as slow as we do is exactly because of that. We don't want to burn ourselves out. But in the end it might still be burning us out so I'm going to discuss the options with DJ.

When you put it like that, it almost sounds like a lousy excuse on Lucasfilm's part for not wanting to devote their resources and time into restoration since they get a paycheck at the end of the day for their work while you guys strive relentlessly to keep our love for Star Wars alive.

Is there any chance of passing on this project to anyone equally capable in precision and passion or does the future of it rest on the shoulders of you and DJ?

Author

We'll feel like idiots if Disney just hands this over to Lowry or something.

Seriously though, there's no guaranty of that.  From what I understand Fox owns ANH in perpetuity, even if their rights to ESB and RotJ run out in a couple years.

I was really impressed with how well the preview clip looked, really hard to believe it was GOUT sourced.  I understand (well not really) how much work goes into these things, getting burned out is inevitable.  Health problems are always a drag as well, I've been going through a rough time myself and it really puts your life on hold.  Personally the glue marks and imperfections never bothered me much, whatever you guys decide to do it's going to look world's better than what we have now!  All the hard work is very much appreciated.  And honestly I don't see Disney bothering with restorations,  I think they'll be using their resources on things to come instead.  If we didn't already have the Blu Rays we would have a shot, but not with them already out there.  Just my opinion.

@djchaseb: Except Disney isn't making a dime on the Blu-Rays.

There will be an inevitable re-release once I-III, V and VI distribution rights revert to them in... wait is 2020 really the right number?

Um, okay, never mind.  Keep at it guys at your own pace.  You'll still beat them to completion.
