when the Imperial walkers first open fire on the rebels in their trenches, the explosive sounds from the laser impacts are different in the '80 mix than in the '93

Yes, I also noticed that but wasn't entirely sure of it, I'm really looking forward to finally have this mix synced with the gout.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Can someone tell me exactly where the side breaks took place for the laserdisc release that is being used? Also locations of reel changes if those are known--anywhere a definite jump in synch is most likely to occur.

like this?

GOUT

Times are calculated using simple formula: (Frame) divided by (24000/1001)
They might or might not match any given DVD player's display

P.S. Those reel lengths in particular, might be considered as 'theatrical' chapter stops on a DVD

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

OK, I now have my Finals for ANH and ESB for v3, the video's are done, and ANH now has msycamores subs and timings, looks very nice I might say.

Soon as the audio files are done for the above mentioned titles I can start putting them together, then I will let the people that are interested in these know how to get them.

Is there any good artists here that would like to make a static main menu and audio selection menu for me for all 3 films(hell I wouldn't mind case and disc artwork also)? I know before I had no menu at all but now thinking about it, I would like to be able to select the audio at least.

The images need to be 960x540, and I don't want any button text on there, I will add that in DVD Lab Pro.

Are you looking for 'Classic' style for the menu?  I might have just the thing if you would like.

Do you have main menu images and audio selection images for all 3?

Hairy_hen,msycamore,satanika,ChainsawAsh,Sluggo are you guys on AIM? if so what is your AIM name?

I'm not on AIM, sorry.  I don't do the whole IM thing anymore.  I do check my email often enough that I get PMs right away, though (thank you, Droid Eris) - I'll go chuck some of my old PMs so I don't have to worry about my inbox filling up.

--edit--

Damn, all I had to do was delete any Janskeet-related PMs - that made up around 40-60% of ALL my inbox/outbox!

Haha!!  Janskeet.  hehe.

Let me check if my IM possibilities.

And yes, I have ones for all of those.  I had an old trilogy project that I need menues for, but it never came together.  I'd be happy to donate them.

Sorry, I'm not on AIM either.

I've just listened to your Jedi audio track and just like the Empire track it seems perfect and in sync. Very well done, dark_jedi! it seems you've gotten great at this! I'll admit it was a little harder for me on this one though as I'm not as familiar with Jedi as I am with Empire but I hope you have other people that check them for you just so you can be sure of it. Thanks for what must've been hard work!

Thanks msycamore, it was hard work, I literally sat at my PC all damn day, except for when I took a break to make some food for my little boy and make some white chocolate peppermint mocha's for myself to keep awake.

Still waiting on feedback form hairy_hen and ChainsawAsh now, I was almost just going to upload all files for hairy_hen but I did not want to put more on his plate, he is already redoing ESB.

Just wanted to let everyone interested in this project know that Sluggo is making up some very nice static menu's for me for all 3 movies, and the ESB sample I looked at looked GREAT!

I am not going to post samples and I hope he does not either, this will be a surprise.

The credits list is growing every day on this project LOL, I am liking this teamwork, Together Everyone Achieves More = TEAM.

I've just finished watching the first 45 minutes of ESB, and I only noticed one potential sync issue that I think is just bad ADR (that is, part of the mix and beyond your control).  From my notes:

- First sighting of the AT-ATs - "Echo station, 3TA(?) - We have spotted Imperial walkers!" seems to be out of sync.

Other things I've noted:

- There's a weird little "Bong" at the beginning (some CBS/Fox Home Entertainment thing from the laserdisc, most likely), just before the 20th Century Fox fanfare begins.

- Wampa scene: I think this is just an oddity of the 1980 mix, but I don't remember ever hearing the sound of Luke's lightsaber igniting twice in quick succession like that.

Other than that, I have found absolutely no issues in the first 45 minutes.  To top that off, this mix feels much clearer than the 1993 mix ever did (I don't remember the 1985 mix of "Empire" very well, so I can't compare this with that).  It's wonderful to have the snowspeeder crash sound effect back, too.  General room tone and ambience seems to be more pronounced, which is something I noticed with the 1977 stereo mix of ANH, as well.

I have a very strong feeling this is going to be my audio mix of choice for Empire!  Thank you so much for taking this task on, DJ!

Now to finish Empire ... (I'm gonna watch Jedi either later tonight or tomorrow, I'll let you know how that goes, too)

Keep it coming Chainsaw, I will look into it.

For the record, if the igniting-the-lightsaber-twice thing is legitimately a part of the mix on the laserdisc, don't change it.  I just thought it was interesting enough to make a note of.

The little weird "bong" is carried over from the LD intro, I will see about removing that(I thought I cleared enough but obviously not).

The double lightsaber light up is on my LD capture, I never noticed that until you said that LOL, sounds kind of funny in a cool way.

and I will check the AT AT scene after The Book of Eli, I need a breather.

Author
Time

Oh, I understand - take a nice break, and come back later with fresh ears!

Yeah, leave the double-lighsaber-light-up, it's a mistake but I like it.  And it's clearly part of the original mix.

Now, here's something I've never noticed before - I dunno if it's "new" to the 1980 mix, or if I'm just thick and never noticed.  If someone could let me know if this appears on the 1985/1993 mix, I'd be very interested:

When Luke enters "The Cave" and meets Luke-Vader, right before Vader appears we hear splashing off-screen, then the sound of water sloshing, making it sound as if not-really-Vader is coming from inside a pond or something.  I think it's kinda cool, but as I said, maybe it's always been there and I'm just thick.

Damn you're right! I totally missed that double igniting lightsaber effect, weird. :) The out of sync issue with the spotting of the AT-AT's is just bad ADR, as far as I know it has been like that in every mix, there's also many other places in the film that this happens that can easily be mistaken as badly synced up audio. I found it much worse in Jedi though.

Also the splashing you heard in the cave scene is present in the '93 audio, and I think all the other mixes, it's been there as long as I can remember, I just think it is easier to hear some sounds in this mix as it doesn't have the same dynamic range. I'm not sure about it but I think I've heard it was a concept of Vader coming out of the water or something that was cut from the final film.

Just checked the AT-AT scene and it looks like that on my LD cap also, if you guys want proof I will clip it and upload it.

Also msycamore once the torrent is done(which should be in a few minutes) for those ROTJ scenes let me now if they will work for you, gotta love private torrents.

Author
Time

Uploading the clip isn't necessary, the parts just before and just after are in sync, so bad ADR sounds right to me.  I figured that was probably the issue anyway.

Since I'm watching specifically to find sync issues, things like that jump out at me more than they ever normally would.

Getting through ESB is slow going at the moment, what with cooking dinner and running back and forth between home and Jewel (can you believe I bought Manwich sauce but no ground beef?  That was stupid ... ) - I'm only an hour and 4 minutes in at the moment (just after the water splashing sound I mentioned).

msycamore, I hadn't thought about the reduced dynamic range before - that explains why room tone and other ambience seem more pronounced in this and the '77 stereo mixes.

And I can't believe I've never noticed the water-splashing before ...

I was just meaning I would post a small clip of the scene in question just to ease everyone's minds is all, I know I would probably want to see it LOL.

I can't thank the 2 of you enough for being so thorough.

I am going to have to listen to the water splashing now and see if that is an error.
