I'm just watching the PAL DVD's here and it seems an awful lot more grainy than Moth3r's is all.

Zion/Moth3r, here are the screenshots for you. I know the numbering isn't correct... but they are in order. I've given you the raw unresized png files. The colour and brightness have not been altered. By the way Zion, there's no such thing as an "uncompressed" JPEG... even a quality 100 JPEG saves colour at 1/4 resolution as it does brightness (the same as TV). Personally I think you should save your bandwith and allow faster access to the page by choosing "quality 90".

I compared a shot taken from the opening crawl (posted by boba feta in the thread here) with the same shot (SW 2, filename sw002sd0.png) from page 1 of this thread.

boba feta's version was sharper and slightly more orange than boris's.

I don't know the process he used, but I darkened both the screenshots just slightly to match the black level of the EOD screenshot. Also, mine are saved as quality-90 JPEGS... that may be why they look a little softer then feta's PNG's. I suggest you take the archive I uploaded above ^^, as those are unprocessed PNG's. Though there's no screenshot of the crawl in there!

This is an unprocessed PNG of the crawl though, you'll have to get someone with NTSC to post the same shot:

    http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/4526/sw002sd0.png

While I'm at it, here is exactly the same frame from EOD.

My process was PowerDVD... Use Profile: Original, Capture settings: Capture to File - Capture Aspect Ratio: Original Video Source Size. Version 4.0 (the version that came with my DVD-RW).

I think this shows it's the same... but the methods we're using to capture them are showing some slight differences...

wait it's the wrong frame!! I'll try again....

... ok I think this is the same frame now:

All those in ***The NEW "official" Screenshots thread *** (same as the ones boris posted, above).

Just did a comparison of boris's caps and Moth3r's (from Zion's site). If boris's caps are accurate, then Moth3r's PAL DVDs are better than the GOUT ones. Now we need to see the NTSC GOUT caps.

I just had a look at the screenies provided by R2D2 and they look pretty darn good to me. Really sharp with excellent color balance. But judging from these grabs it's safe to say that the framing is not the same as on the French/German laserdiscs, so this must be taken from another source. But I can't believe the quality would be this good if those were upscaled from the NTSC masters. Is that possible?

Edit: Wait a sec! Those screens are stretched vertically. They have the exact same width as the other grabs on the comparison page, but they are definitely taller. Is this straight from the DVD's R2D2? Or have you maybe made some photoshop error here? I can't believe they could be framed like that. Hmmm...

pal dvd's have vertically stretched pixels on computer screens ntsc's are squashed.

So does that mean Moth3r's and Citizen's PAL screengrabs were resized before they were put up on the comparison page? Cause those are also shorter than R2D2's grabs.

You can view them either way on the comparison page.

BTW, boris, Zion was right about your caps being a bit soft.

Yes, R2D2s screenshots are clearly better, thanks!

    But...

Look at the panel behind Han. (PAL THX laserdisc bottom pic)
    http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/4140/outldpalsw22ic2.jpg

But other than the higher vertical resolution of PAL the PAL LD transfer should not stand a chance against a NTSC D1 mastertape transfer, even if the NTSC was scaled to 'PAL'. But that is only in theory, I guess

R2D2, thank you very much for the screenshots. Both you and boris have done a great service getting these up so quickly for everyone to see. I will return the favor by uploading these to my comparison site as soon as possible. That is of course if RapidShare will allow me to download all of those files. At present, it says I have exceeded my allowed limit and must wait 6 minutes to download the second file.

I used that terminology on the site, didn't I? I'll have to revise it.

Screenshots are up on the Screenshot Comparison Page

After looking at R2D2's screencaps, it would appear that the GOUT has slightly better detail than even Moth3r's PAL transfer. However, there is no doubt in my mind that this PAL release is sourced from the NTSC master. Just look at the way Moth3r's and Citizen's shots are framed compared to all the NTSC versions. The PAL GOUT is the same as all the NTSC versions. There is also no doubt in my mind that the opening shot was recomposited.

I see a couple that appear to be the incorrect frame: Shot 10, and Shot 15. Both look like they're about 1 frame off.

If anyone has an NTSC version I would love to get screenshots of that one up as well.

I agree, Zion. The shots posted by R2D2 are sharper than those posted by boris, and they do seem to contain more detail than my laserdisc transfer.

I'll try to get the shots up on my page today.

    Edit:

GOUT shots are now up, except for Nos. 3 and 5. (R2D2, could you possibly provide these please? Also, I think I need the preceding frame for shot 6 - compare the pattern of film dirt with the TR47 version.)

The GOUT version is clearly more detailed than any other version*. It's also evident that the picture contains more grain/noise.

    * Edit: But a few scenes do look better on the PAL laserdisc transfers. See shots 22 and 24 on Zion's site.

I got these overnighted to me by my friend who works for wal mart. i dont know how he got them before release because I got them in the mail today. I have to say it was worth the money for them. I watched Star Wars using VLC(it has the aspect ratio change so it looks nicely on my widescreen mac display), and was amazed with the picture quality. It reminded me of watching the VHS tapes i have when I was younger, seeing the slight flicker from the film transfer making it feel like the theater experience. I love the openeing crawl, redone yes, but nonetheless no "A New Hope". I do have to say looking at the screencap comparisons, that the pal one is a bit granier than the NTSC release. Thats really the only difference i see. I cant wait to watch the other 2 tomorrow.

Interesting. Based upon what I see on that site, the new release looks better than even the 2004 DVD despite not being anamorphic. After that, the "Gonzo" set most often looked the best to me.

I agree with this statement 100%. Now we need NTSC screenshots to find out if the increased grain/noise in the PAL release screenshots is simply from the 480 -> 576 vertical resolution upscaling. Overall though this looks like the definitive release thus far of the OOT. A nice warts and all release. I would have loved an anamorphic transfer but I am not going to complain about getting what I asked for, the OOT on DVD, FINALLY! I'll be picking up this set today, hopefully Best Buy will have some of the exclusive tin sets still available at my local store.

Yes and no. Generally, the 2004 transfer is sharper, and generally has more stable colours... however they're the wrong hues and the saturation is also way off. So yes, overall the GOUT is more "pleasing" to me anyway.
