As for the JSC, it should be possible with a fancy player to reframe the picture to cut out the Japanese subtitles.  I bet VLC can do it, and mplayer/mpv with the right options definitely can.

I couldn't figure out how to frame out the subs in VLC. Any tips on how to do it in any of the available windows based media players?

 On VLC you just go to the video drop-down menus, select "crop", and then the 2.35:1 ratio (although this may cut some off if the frame isn't centered, so you can try 2.20:1 also).

Nice! I could have sworn I tried that? derp

video > aspect ratio > default

video > crop > 2.35:1

works perfect with no image loss at all.

Thanks!

and thanks for the awesome transfer althor

Yeah, probably. I don’t know if IPs have cue marks or not.

Are you using a regular average of the 5 captures or a median?

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

It is an average of 5 captures using temporalsoften. I use a function that motion compensates the captures to help with alignment issues. The pass3 clip will be the center/output clip. This uses avisynth 2.6 and the latest MVTools2 which has support for multi-threading, etc.

Function FPA(clip pass1,clip pass2,clip pass3, clip pass4, clip pass5)
{
interleave=interleave(pass1,pass2,pass3,pass4,pass5)
super=msuper(interleave,pel=2,mt=true)
multivectors=manalyse(super,multi=true,delta=2,mt=true)
multiclip=mcompensate(interleave,super,multivectors,mt=true,tr=2,center=true)
average=temporalsoften(multiclip,2,255,255,50,2).selectevery(25,12)
return(average)
}

Hi Althor,

I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you’ve done, I downloaded and watched your JSC trilogy at the weekend and was blown away for an NTSC LaserDisc transfer! I almost cried at the absence of DVNR smearing! The strong colours, visible film grain and slight film flicker also put a big smile on my face! The only down side is, thanks to you I now know I must add the JSC to my LaserDisc collection!

I know you have subsequently done a five capture average of the JSC, unfortunately this isn’t available on myspleen that I could see. The results you have been getting with LD-Decode are incredible (for LaserDisc) HappyCube has done an amazing job on the software! I see you mentioned you wouldn’t want to do a five capture average using LD-Decode due to the size of the files and decoding time, have you considered doing a three or even two capture average instead?

Once again thanks for all you’ve done!

Thanks for the praise! Happycube is still updating his software and has begun to implement gpu acceleration which should provide real-time decoding. This will bring the 5 capture average into the realm of the feasible once I get a card that supports his gpu stuff.

Atm, I’m trying to finish the 2001 criterion LD so that I can upload it to the spleen. I basically decided to take a break from SW LD’s by doing this “little” project. It’s turned out to be a nightmare to sync to the blu-ray lol. It has what I can only describe as rolling cadence changes that are custom for each scene. I’ve no idea why they’ve done this but it’s insane to try and sort it out. I’m on side 5 of 6 and hopefully it’ll be finished around christmas time. After this, I’ll be back to the SW stuff 😃.

I am finished with the US97SE trilogy though. I’m just trying to sort out some of the audio stuff before making it available.

I see the French set is propagating on usenet recently.
You’ve shown cue dots in the first film; do the French sequels have cue dots too?

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

The French set that I just posted this weekend is the THX pressing which doesn’t seem to be from a theatrical print. I probably don’t know what I’m talking about but I’ve heard it’s from the same master as the DC/gout with less severe DVNR. The next french sets I post will be from the pre-THX era and those should all be theatrical prints because I’ve seen cue marks on all three sets that I have. That includes SW,ESB, and ROTJ.

Hi Althor!

Thank you for your work. I want to check out the Japanese Laserdisc on the Spleen you have preserved and I ask me, if I can mux the German audio tracks from Harmy’s DE to it?

Kindly regards
Nico

I believe that all of Harmy’s projects are gout synced so it should be fine to mux audio from his projects with my laserdisc preservations.

The US97SE trilogy boxset is going up now. I was going to mux everything into one single mkv but it was way complicated to make everything work right and in the end it still wouldn’t work the way I wanted it to so…single MKV’s. They include the cinema DTS and Laserdisc 5.1 audio files thanks to Capablemetal and his project. This and all other special edition laserdiscs will be synced to his material as reference.

Thank you so much althor. I’ve been trying to find Dark Jedi’s transfer of the '97SE LD for some time now. Needless to say, your version is soooo much more than I thought DJ’s capture would get me. I absolutely love it. I also managed to grab your JSC from a.b.starwars, with the exception of ROTJ. Too many files are damaged in that one. Do you plan on making it available again or am I just missing something? I’m not really experienced with usenet so I’m not sure if what’s available there now should work fine.

Thanks! The latest 720p jsc posts should be good. I know that at least a few people have nabbed it successfully. Are you using the par files to repair missing chunks? If you use sabnzbd it will pretty much do all of that automatically for you.

I tried to repair it with quickpar but there’s something like 3000 blocks missing. ANH was perfectly fine, ESB had a little bit missing so repair was successful. ROTJ is just strange, almost all the files are incomplete.

Weird. Sounds like you are doing everything right. I’ll consider reposting it someday if you don’t have any success.

Thank you. I’m more sure this '97SE LD will keep me happy for a long time.

Could someone please post some screen caps from the Original Widescreen LaserDisc Edition of Return of the Jedi from 1990?

I’d like to see how Shifted-Up Letterboxed Image looks.

I’ve downloaded ESB 97SE from a.b.starwars three times now and part025.rar never seems to finish.

JEDIT: It’s all good now.
