Might wanna mention it at the alt.binaries.starwars thread.

Zeromancer: You mean like when aliens are speaking that is all printed in German right in the picture area itself (not in the bottom black bar), but the human voices are all in English?

We Germans dub 99.9% of all foreign movies into our language. So someone would have to re-insert the original audio track into the stream. You would still have to cope with the German textcrawl, but hey man, those pictures look gorgeous!

Now this is more like it. Someones posted the original H264 version at alt.binaries.hdtv.repost

"Titel...............................: Star.Wars.Episode.4.Eine.Neue.Hoffnung.HDTV.1080i.H264.German.AC3.DL
Erscheinungsdatum...................: 1977
Format (MPEG 4,H.264/AVC)...........: MKV / Mpeg4 AVC
Codec...............................: H264
Formatinfos (Aufloesung/FPS/etc. )..: 1920x1080 interlaced / 25 FPS
Source..............................: 1080i H264 TS / AC3 German : PAL DVD
Soundformat.........................: AC3 Dolby Digital 5.1 / 2.0

Audiobitrate........................: 448 kbps
FSK.................................: 12

And Karyudo's right about the filesize, this one's less than half size of the MPG2 recode version.

Uhm... 25 fps, but still 1080i? In PAL countries it's common to speed the 23.976 of movies up to 25 fps, so there's no need for telecining (and since this release has German audio, the movie HAS to be sped up to be in-synch)... I'm somewhat confused.

Hmm, too bad about all the voices being in German. Plus PAL movies are speeded up, so that messes up the video and audio. But it certainly doesn't affect the screencaps, they look super!

I sure hope the HD broadcast of all the Star Wars movies coming up on Cinemax will look this great! Get your HD digital video recorders ready, guys. This is our (maybe only) chance to get all 6 Star Wars movies recorded in HD without any further changes (even more changes to the movies may come in the 30th anniversary set). And please record and then back them all up at max quality, so the full unaltered video and audio quality of the original HD cable presentation is preserved. Once we have safe backup copies of all 6 movies on Blu-Ray BD-R disks in full HD quality that will play on any standard Blu-Ray set top movie player, they can never be lost or deteriorate and we can watch them any time.

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Screw Blu-ray.

And you can't make back-up copies. You can't even record the HD signal from Cinemax.

Hey, if you prefer HD-DVD, then record the movies onto dual-layer HD-DVD disks then. This isn't about which format one prefers, as long as the full quality of the Cinemax broadcast is captured and preserved. What do you mean it can't be recorded from Cinemax, no one else has mentioned any such thing? The German t.v. broadcast of A New Hope in 1080 HD which that fan on the other forum recorded works just fine according to him, and it looks superb. So why couldn't the same thing be done with the Cinemax HD presentation?

Good luck. Clearly you dont' know what you're talking about.

You wouldn't need a dual-layered HD DVD disc to fit the movie. Most run 10-15gb. Also, the quality on HD DVD is far better than any broadcast signal. So there's nothing perfect about the HD captures that you'd get anyway. A pre-recorded version will be better if using the same master.

And unless the copyright encryption is turned off where you live (which I doubt) for Cinemax, there's no way to capture it.

It was posted on the site with the screencaps that the Cinemax broadcast might be in 1080, if that's the case and they use good bit-rates, then I figured it might go past 15 gig, in which case you either have to use a dual-layer HD-DVD disk or a single-layer Blu-Ray disk to have it on a disk you can play in a HD player. And full quality in this context obviously means the full quality that they broadcast the Star Wars movies at in HD on Cinemax, whatever that level of quality turns out to be. It depends on the res they use and the bit-rate, that won't be known for sure until they actually broadcast it, I guess. Anyhow, that fan on the other site seemingly had no problem recording the German broadcast of the HD version of A New Hope off his t.v., so apparently that wasn't encrypted. Hopefully it can be done here, too, in one way or another.

It would be tastey for a wmv conversion for all of those with an xbox360. I unfortunately don't have the know-how or the elbow grease (my pc is 5 years old). Just throwing out the idea....

As someone who downloads HD movies all the time, you wouldn't need more than 15gb.

And what channel was it shown in Germany? They don't have the same encryption that we have.

I'd rather stick with my SD-DVD's than watch something with PAL speed-up. Luckily, the HD formats do away with it.

Well then, the movies will fit on either HD-DVD disks or Blu-Ray disks, take your pick. =)

Yeah, it's not good having the artificial PAL speed up or dubbed foreign voices, that's why this Cinemax HD broadcast of all the Star Wars movies is so important. They can be fully preserved in HD for unlimited viewing as they are, before any further changes that might be made in the 30th anniversary set. =)

Well, I can't watch any film material at 60Hz the judder drives me nuts far more than the PAL speedup.
For any NTSC HD material it's best to IVTC on the fly it and watch it at 71.928Hz synched, that way you get no speedup and no annoying judder, best of both worlds.

I don't know that the HD formats do away with PAL speedup or NTSC judder, the first HD-DVD players all are locked at 60Hz for North America which makes them j-u-d-d-e-r city, I haven't seen the specs on the European models yet to see if they are also 60Hz or 50Hz, but I don know some european HDTV sets are 50Hz as are the HD broadcasts...
It would have been a perfect opportunity to do away with both NTSC and PAL and move to 1080P at 72Hz worldwide, but of course they didn't. *sigh*

Well,

Astraweb is missing almost all parts. Only 10 or so of them actually made it to the server. Dammit.

Not sure about other ones.

I have to have these so please repost if you can.

Okay, they'll no doubt look even better when the official HD disc comes out, but that's likely to be some years away. So Dunedain is right.

I should mention that if there's anyone planning on capturing this, and has Cinemax on Demand, apparently Lucasfilm will be showing "more than a dozen special features and footage - from original concept art to the behind-the-scenes looks at the making of the saga's creatures, weaponry and more" (as per it's press release). That might be a good thing to get as well, although I have no idea whether these are entirely new featurettes or old material just re-aired.

There are also supposed to be "trailers and behind-the-scenes" content available on the Cinemax website during the airing of the films tonight (though it might stay on there longer).

The behind the scenes material is the web docs the were released with the retail DVD's.

It looks like the point of this repost was to include German 5.1 audio from the DVD. For that, the poster's used MKV, which allows multiple audio tracks. Is that the only change -- packaging? In other words, is the video stream unaltered, just remuxed?
