I walked into a small shop over the weekend, and discovered they were having a huge sale on all their back issue comics, so I decided I'd thumb through the SW comics, maybe fill in the few holes in my collection. I ended up only finding one Droid comic I didn't have, all the other SW titles they had I didn't care anything about. However, I did stumble across several issues of Star Wars Galaxy Magazine. I bought one of every issue they had, just for old times sake. It is like going back in time to 1994, and it is bliss. No SE, no PT, just a really nerdy magazine about Star Wars, and all of it is down right awesome, because it is Star Wars and Star Wars is awesome. Ah, such a simple time... who says time machines don't exist? This evening, I have been hanging out in 1994 and reading the latest issue of SW Galaxy. I pulled that issues of Droids out of its sleeve to see an advertisement for the Star Wars Trilogy on VHS! Fantastic quality, remastered in THX! I am going to get a set as soon as it is released, I'll never have to buy another set of the trilogy again, this "one last time" set looks like like the most amazing set ever. Also, there was an advertisement for Rebel Assult II, the first one wasn't that great, but I heard this new one will have full motion video with live actors!!! Gonna be amazing, I can foresee it, heh heh heh.

Okay, back to reality... sigh...

A friend of mine gave me an old issue of Star Wars Galaxy and a Star Wars Technical Journal (one of a series of 6 or so "magazines" with blueprints & technical specs for various star wars stuff.  mine is on imperial technology including ships, blasters, etc.) for christmas last year.  I know exactly how you feel.  I really got a kick out of seeing the old Jawa Trader ads in the middle section of Galaxy.  I remember scouring those ads as a kid circling everything i wanted my mom to order from it for my birthday or christmas or whatever was coming next were i thought i might get a present.  Ah.... the good old days.

On a similar note, at the "Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination" exhibit that recently traveled through St. Paul, i bought a second printing issue of the original Star Wars movie theater program.  Talk about a time machine.  It was like going straight back to '77, even though i wasn't born yet.  so much fun & so much cooler than what you get at theaters now (usually nothing!).

Those old technical journals were frantastic, I always wanted to buy those, but never felt them worth the price tag. Maybe I'll check ebay or amazon...

Since finding the SW Galaxy mags, I dug through my old stuff and found a box full of old SW magazines I collected over the years, I've got a decent collection of old Jawa Traders, I used to love those things. I also have issues of Toy Fair and Scrye with SW covers (used to really be into the SW CCG), a few Nintendo Powers with SW covers, as well as a few issues of LucasArts old mag. and an issue of TIME with the cast of SW on the cover. So many memories.

Reading these really makes me think about how dumb it is to even waste breath on complaining about the prequels. SW was all I could have ever wanted it to be when I was the age that it mattered, at that time it was at the peak of awesomeness as far as I was concerned. It was about the time I was getting to the age that I wasn't so into it anymore that TPM came out.

The other day at the grocery store, I saw a kid looking at snack food with Clone Wars character on it, and suddenly he got all excited, he started walking and talking like a protocol droid and calling his mom master. It made me smile. I couldn't help but thinking that I hope that kid gets as much enjoyment out of that stupid franchise as I did when I was a kid. The Star Wars you see today is not the Star Wars I grew up with, and I am fine with that, it is just a memory now, something that glimpses of can be seen by peering into boxes stored away in my basement, and that recollections of can be shared with people who grew up with it in a similar way to myself, like many of the people on this board. What more could I ask for (other than a real DVD release of course)?
