Yes, I suppose that might be a good solution that would please everyone. ;-)

My own facepalm happens here. Clearly I had a basic SDTV spec fail. 480 would be a spec for SDTV vertical resolution, not horizontal resolution. I do still feel that a upscale factor of 4 might yield great results, glad you are open to experimenting with this.

If your crop is water, what, exactly, would you dust your crops with?

Oke, I've decided that the final product will be 1080p. The upscaling to 1920x816 further reduces aliasing somewhat, and has slightly better quality. The next video sample will also be 1080p.

Good decision! Waiting for some screenshots now! (^^,)

Hahaha, you first... :-P

I'm surprised that the increase to 1920x816 actually reduces aliasing more. I would think an increase in resolution that much would actually make the aliasing worse/ more visible. Or does your script just handle it better at that resolution?

Since there is little to gain in tems of detail, I use edge directed interpolation to upscale to 1080p. If you use edge directed interpolation the aliasing is generally reduced.

Good to know. Very excited to see the results!

Thank you!

Glad you are using 1920x1080 (hopefully 4:2:0) so it will be blu-ray player compatible and I can't wait to see it!

I've been optimizing some of the filter settings. The video sample should be online by this weekend. Hope you will like it...

Is it the weekend yet? ;-)

The video sample is about 70% done, so almost. I think and hope it's worth the wait ;-).

Let me be the first to say that this is totally awesome work DrDre!  I am super impressed.  I found myself watching it instead of constantly analyzing it.  I had to remember to analyze it.  Once in awhile stuff pops out that distracts from the movie, but most of the time, it just looks great!  Great job!!!  Now I want the rest of the movie and trilogy.  :-)

I agree with thorr and towne32, this is incredible. 1080P really makes it shine. Aliasing is further reduced, and everything is just that much cleaner looking. This is definitely the version to release! Although I suspect rendering it at 1080P will increase the rendering time a lot.

A stunning release, excellent work! :D

Disclaimer: I'm using an old 1024x768 half-optimized lcd monitor, so take this in account when evaluating my feedback!

OK, just finished to watch it... apart the "usual suspects" - read: jagged lines on the droids around frames 4500/4600, which needs IMHO more aggressive antialiasing - the rest was very good; yes, tiny jaggies are still here and there, but I noted them because I watched the clip to find'em all! (^^,)

From here - apart the few instances where there are clearly jagged lines that could be solved applying further antialiasing - you have the green light! Go for it!

Yeah, first of all, this is awesome. Excellent work here. And thanks so much.

I've been following this thread for a while, but forgive me if it's already been brought up and answered, but will your final mkv be bluray compliant? I'm assuming it will be, but I only wanted to ask because I'm really excited for this.

Also do you have any plans to maybe do a DVD9? I guess it might be kinda silly to do an SD version of these, but I'm just curious.

Again, super cool project, really looking forward to seeing these on my big screen.

You should try a clip from the PAL ROTJ disc to see how much sharper it would look since it's from an actual 576 line master.

Here I can answer, too: sadly, the EPIV and V are NOT better on PAL DVD, at the contrary of EPVI.

Thanks for the compliments! Glad you liked it. :-)

At this point I'm planning to use the NTSC versions for all three films, but if ROTJ really looks better with SR, I'll reconsider.

I'm planning to make it bluray compatible, and if there's a demand for it, I will also create a DVD-9.

The rendering takes a little longer, but all good things come to those who wait... :-P

Is there a reason that IV and V aren't better on the PAL dvds? I would assume that all 3 would be 576i.  Its just really strange that the NTSC versions for IV and V are better. Confuses me :P

I think you should use the PAL DVD for ROTJ - at least, according to anyone in this forum, this is better than NTSC!

It has something to do with masters used and/or NTSC/PAL conversion... can't remember, but if you are interested, you must do a little google-fu to search in older thread here...

Yes, theoretically PAL should be superior, BUT... theory and practice are not always the same... indeed, even if there are around 5000 PAL laserdisc, only few ones are better than their NTSC counterparts - using similar quality players, of course...
