Star Wars Expanded Universe and Official Fan-Made Stuff question.

Hey-a... I was just browsing around the STAR WARS: Ultimate Visual guide
and I stumbled upon lots of fan-made expanded universe additions to the compendium.

The more I read about it, the more fan-boyish and non-star wars-ish it became.
I now find out that most (I said MOST not all) of this EU stuff is really annoying
and sometimes very dark and very far-fetched to be part of the 'actual' STAR WARS
Universe... is this stuff "official"? Meaning it's sealed (just like the film's stuff) and no
one can alter it?

I'm sorry If I somehow offended anyone, but it's just really kinda' dumb.
Too many Jedi too many serious soul/altar/force-monks/possessions, etc.
That hardly fits into a STAR WARS film let alone a STAR WARS happening...

do any of you agree to this? I hope I'm not the only one, because I think
STAR WARS is how it is on screen... some EU stuff is a great addition, but usually
it feels too 'icky' you know what I mean?

Just like the über-seriousness of a scene in CLONE WARS (vol.1) where those
female Jedi are in that Lightsaber-o-matic™ Crystal-Temple-Cave-Thing and
are crouched and using the force and being terribly serious as if this was some
kind of a super-sacred ritual by adding the crystal into the handle.
Compare that to Episode IV, V, VI, I, II, heck even III... the whole Jedi mannerism
and atmosphere of the universe isn't that serious.. that's what I like about Star Wars!
It's here for epic, great, heroic entertainment! Never overtly dark (save Ep3... it was supposed to be)
nor super-sacred™ seriousness! Thank you.

On that, I don't agree, just cause the whole Clone Wars series isn't "that serious". All in it is exaggerated, it's the style of the series... too bad you've missed it (I mean no offence)...

After that, I think the EU has some really good moments. All is not great, but I personaly see all those elements as small parts of the Star Wars universe, the movies being the centre of all.
And if you don't want to read infos about the EU, I have only one advice for you: don't buy SW reference books.

I don't understand the EU, let alone the alternate universe EU.

I was in the bookstore a few months ago and found a graphic novel of Return of the Jedi, except that...it wasn't ROTJ. It was some sort of weird Twilight Zone of the movie where there were two Luke Skywalkers, and a whole bunch of other shit that didn't make sense.

The story was the same, mostly, but the plot was all different. Leia and a couple of other people blew up Jabba's place (not just the sail barge), Luke battled Vader, but Leia was on the Death Star as well, then later Luke and Leia hook up or something. It was a whole bunch of messed up shit and I was looking at it going, "WTF is this?!"

How the hell does this crap get published? And even worse, who buys it?

Ummm... read that part one more time... I'm sure you will start laughing
(what I wanted to say: the original movies were altered many times, this includes even some very serious changes - see Palpatine's conversation with Vader in ESB. With George Lucas on the loose, nothing is set in stone... but I get your point, belive me - I don't like most of the EU stuff myself, with that all-new "Jedi religion" stuff being so overhyped - STAR WARS was once a western in space, dammit!)
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

Well, a SW movie adaptation (as a book, comics, videogame,...) is not really considered as part of the EU...
Sorry, but it's a bad example...

Invader Jenny, the "Infinties" stories are the Star Wars version of Marvel's popular old "What If?" comic book. Showing what happens in a familiar plotline if one zigs instead of zags. I found the one where Luke's torpedo didn't stop the Death Star, and The Yavin base gets it pretty cool. I think Lucas was "inspired" by Yoda's larger role in that storyline while writing Episode III.
Ironically, Marvel SW fans back in the day begged for a "What If?" Star Wars story or two, (that and having Vader meet up with Dr. Doom!) but Lucasfilm apparently shot those ideas down.

hmm i donno about that i love the EU even more then the movies, find it great how detailed it is. i havent read much of the clonewars books but from waht i did read they werent very good, nor were many of the books between ROTJ and NJO. read the NJO books though they are fantastic. some of them are shitty but the whole story ark is amazing. 5 years covered in 20 books you pretty much read the entire war it is very cool. puts the war back in star wars too.

Remember when the number of Star Wars novels (aside from the movie adaptations) consisted of just the three Brian Daley Han Solo books, Lando's own trilogy, and Splinter of the Mind's Eye?

Somehow I actually do remember that. I was young and had heard more books were being written, but there were very few books out there.

I've recently got into the EU and I've been enjoying it. I like how it adds so much to each character and explains things that the movies leave open, especially the PT. I've been reading the NJO and I love that story. Sure, for a SW's movie, it would be too dark and hostile but the story itself is fantastic.

I see your point that the EU doesn't have the same feel as the movies but we all agree that the PT doesn't have the same feel as the OT.

yeah it would be dark, but thats what i love about the books, the darkness of them. IMO, its the best parts of the movies two, which movies are the best, IMO ESB, and ROTS are 1 and 2, funny how they are the darkest. which one is the worst, TPM, funny how that was the most light hearted.
