Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD** — Page 88

I say for the new ST I don't care about if they use the term sith as long as they don't have characters like Darth Maul who ruin the title of sith.

What’s worse George Lucas changing the OT or selling the rights to Disney

^Interesting theory MarzGurl has there.  To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't put it past Disney to do this as a publicity thing rather than a legitimate casting call.  After all, I sincerely doubt they'll cast unknowns in prominent roles.

I've been questioning whether it's a publicity stunt from the beginning. I remember similar cattle calls in the past, and somebody already well established in the industry, (who wouldn't be caught dead at one of these things) always gets the part.

This kind of thing is older than the search for someone to play Scarlett in Gone With The Wind. ;)

Kaylyn doesn’t have any empirical data backing up her theory, but she does question the legitimacy of the auditions. “It does have me concerned,” she tells me. “I’ve got to admit it.” She adds that she doesn’t want to question the auditions held in other cities, though. “Maybe the other cities are more legitimate, but I don’t know about this one,” she says. After making her case, she passes time playing a Pokemon game on her Nintendo DS.

Uh, is she supposed to be sarcastic here? Because it's pretty obvious those auditions are purely a publicity stunt. And why would only one be illegitimate? It's hardly an interesting point if it doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

It's bullshit, guys. They've got all the extras they need, and you can be sure they've got all of the "top" actors lining up for a part. Any part, for tons of reasons.

If that is the case, it's kind of a cynical exploit of the fans on Disney's part. I don't recall Lucasfilm doing this sort of thing on any of the prequels.

I'm guessing in the case of the Artoo builders, there aren't any union rules to get in the way of them being hired.

The funny thing is, the fans (most of them, at least) don't see this as a calculated, cynical move. To them this is Disney graciously inviting everyone to the land of Star Wars magic and wonder.

So there you go: the fans are appeased, there's news for the press when there isn't any news, and most importantly people who are going to get the parts are still going to get the parts.

I also find it funny how some of the press apparently think that boring auditions are an anomaly unbefitting of movies, especially Star Wars. Seriously, what the hell did Ms. Woodruff expect to find there? Lightsaber duels 24/7? Comradery? People not treated like cattle?

Except their chances of actually being cast are as likely as a snowball fight on Tatooine. If someone prominent in fan circles calls them out out on this, Disney will have a PR stinkbomb on their hands.

All they need to do is grab a few people from these auditions for minor "parts" and they're fine. Something along the lines of Bad Guy Henchman #65*

The first Star Trek movie did generate some good PR using fans for the recreation deck scene where Kirk addresses the entire crew.

On TFN they're convinced that Darth Plagueis will be the villain.

The character from the dropped subplot that taught Palpatine how to manipulate midi chlorians, which he used to create Anakin.  Making the Emperor Luke's granddaddy probably was a step to far for Lucas.

But so was young Han Solo in Episode III.

I am hoping JJ pretends the prequels never happened or never mentions them.

It's quite hilarious how they think GL brilliantly and deliberately forshadowed the triumphant return of Darth Plagueis. One of Plagueis's main roles was to get murdered in the backstory.

If Plagueis or any other villain with a similarly stupid name shows up in the ST, I'll know the Star Wars franchise is dead and that Disney is the Whore of Babylon.

How about fallen (risen?) Sith?

You mean a Sith seduced by the light side?

Give in to your love, and your journey towards the Light Side will be complete.

Take your Jedi arms and give me a big hug, I am unarmed.

Let us hope they dock this one at a Disney park when they're finished with it. :)

Wonder if they used the Empire blueprints?

What I want to know is what new modifications Han made to it in these thirty years.

Maybe it has a Muffin Button now.

I will be astounded if anyone here knows that reference without Google.

^ That would be sufficiently impressive, yes.
