I can't stand the Old Republic. I think it's one of the worst parts of the EU. It copies the movies to the point of being inconsistent with them.

I am sorry you feel that way. But SWTOR game was the only decent Star Wars thing that came out in the last 7-8 years.

I see Abrams going back to the original 1977 film just as he went back to CE3K era Spielberg with Super 8. That means exploring the potential of a story set in that galaxy far, far away. We didn't see a lightsaber until a good half hour into ANH, and we only saw them used twice more in that movie. Han Solo's role as surrogate for the skeptics in the audience provided a great dynamic for the other characters to play off of. Plinkett really hit the nail on the head when he pointed out how hard it is to describe the PT characters without simply stating their profession.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- I want to see Jedi with red lightsabers and darksiders (from here on out I won't say "Sith") with blue and green. Hell, not only that, but I want to see other lightsaber colours and shades, too; orange, pink, yellow, teal, red-violet, midnight blue, mauve, white, silver, aquamarine, gold, cyan, etc.

This doesn't mean that I want/need to see a large number of Force-users with lightsabers. I'd be happy with about five-to-ten Force-users; just give them a wide variety of lightsaber colours.

Besides, I love how Leia looks with a red lightsaber.

Leia got a lightsaber in novels and comic books. The lightsaber has a distinct design.

I think it would be fitting to have it sitting on a shelf. No way would I want to see Carrie Fisher swing it around.

A young Carrie Fisher as Leia swinging around a red lightsaber would've made the universe implode in sexiness, but I don't really want to see it this late in the game.

Please J.J., don't give Leia a lightsaber.

So far I haven't experienced a single benefit from that. Tell it I will speak with it when it has something to say.

Everyone's welcome to their opinion of course, but I really don't see any issue whatsoever with Leia having a lightsaber.

And let's face it, she will have one. If she doesn't, then the movie will have some serious explaining to do. She's a Skywalker for Christ's sake. Yoda, Ben, and Luke all made statements in the last trilogy implying she's going to be trained. I would take issue with the movie if she doesn't have a saber.

At the very least, even if you don't agree with me so far, I'd be shocked if we can't agree that we have far greater things to worry about from this upcoming movie then whether or not Leia has a saber. Let's not multiply complaints beyond necessity; the complaint list is already huge.

But again, this is merely a suggestion; a variety of opinions is a beautiful thing.

I would have much preferred Peter Jackson directing Star Wars over J.J. Abrams, but that's just me.

It's not a complaint, it's just a suggestion. I don't like the thought that Skywalker = Jedi and I especially dislike the thought that force user = lightsaber. A lightsaber is a weapon. Not all force users need weapons. ROTJ implied that Leia will learn the ways of the force, so I'll give you that. But she doesn't need to become a full on lightsaber toting Jedi master. It would make more sense if she remained in politics.

And seriously, how annoying is it that the EU decided to make all of Luke and Leia's (separate) offspring Jedi? Is that really necessary? Isn't there something else even one of them could be (and no, Sith doesn't count)?

Jedi powers would give her a great edge in negotiations, especially if her blood ties with Luke have remained a secret.

I actually pretty much agree with all your points. I just like the idea of Leia having a red lightsaber because, since Luke & Leia already contrast against one another visually (Luke with his fair hair and black clothes, Leia with her dark hair and white clothes), it'd be cool to make them perfect mirror images of one another with complementary lightsaber colours.

Hell, I don't even want her to have a lightsaber if it can't be red.

I agree with you. However,

;)

In all seriousness Leia being trained to use a lightsaber makes sense. She might keep one handy just in case, as a sort of last-resort defense.

I personally hate every scene from AOTC with a lightsaber. Monotonous blue-and-green smears, stupid coloured-light rave scenes between Hayden and Dooku, and constipated CG Yoda on speed -- bleech.

They come across like sugar-coated candy sticks in the Geonosis arena.

I never could put my finger on what was wrong with the lightsabers in that scene. The coloring? The casual way they're handled by a crowd of Jedi? It went beyond their over-use, as RedLetterMedia mentioned. Something else is wrong that only my subconscious can detect.

I think that may be it for me. The prequels got rid of the "lightsabers have weight" idea that the OT had, which seems to add to the cheapness of the lightsaber in the prequels.

I think it's the lack of purpose with the fighting itself rather than anything else. I mean they enter the battle with the supposed purpose of rescuing three people. Then they fight a whole bunch completely randomly... No planned attack formation that I remember. I admit I could be completely wrong about this as it's been a while since I've seen the prequels. So as I recall it was basically Jedi enter the arena from various points, after fighting they end up in the center, saved by an unexpected air support.... So what was the initial plan going in? "Oh we'll just fight a lot and somehow they'll be saved"???

Those images remind me of the Extreme Ghostbusters.

EXTREME!

At this small scale, there's so much individual variation (different species, different ages, differently-colored lightsabers, etc.) that it looks artificial, forced, and manufactured.

(Plus, the colors of the lightsabers don't contrast well with the sandy terrain, cheapening the "coolness" of the effect.)

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Perhaps it's not the lax use by Jedi that is at fault. I'd assume that a Jedi would be quite comfortable using their weapon with little effort, so to give that rarely used feel to them seems ... off.

To me, the problem lies in the lack of public respect of Jedi as a whole that is shown in the PT. Rarely are their actions truly praised, and you never really see Jedi in action just generally doing good deeds. Jedi should be shown rescuing children from wreckage, where the children look up at them in awe and wonder, completely thankful and knowing they are safe because of the Jedi's presence.

We never feel that presence, because the people they generally interact with and protect are either high ranking so there is less sympathy, or just generally unlikeable. The only reason that Yoda and Mace Windu (and Ki-Adi-Mundi) maintained that feel of respect is because they were obviously looked up to within the council. And you can  think it's stupid or hate it all you want, but I have more respect for a lightsaber when Yoda first pulls his out of his cloak in AotC (ignore the jumps and flips and just focus on the drawing the lightsaber), than any time you see Anakin flippantly pull his out.

To me, lightsaber equals jedi - If the Jedi isn't revered, there will be little to no reverence for their use of a lightsaber.

It all comes down to putting characters into situations that the audience can connect with, without overdoing it and shoving it down our throats...

Because I can imagine Imperial Troops holding a group of women and children hostage with an Army of Stormtroopers marching through the mist, and 10 or 15 or even more Jedi attacking this huge army, trying to break through to save the innocent and helpless. Storm trooper heads rolling, blue and green sabers slicing bodies to the ground, blasters taking out Jedi. Utter chaos, watching the kids look on in fear, their mothers crying, trying to soothe them and stroke their hair...

Now I'm picturing George pitching his idea for AOTC of a Jedi in a wheelchair (or Star-Warsy surrogate) and his YesMen coming out of their wov of silence with a collective "Noooooo".
