lol, not a complete puppet, just a puppet of a sense.

And what did they do to change his mind? They probably wrote him out a big fat check. You don't just hound someone till they change their mind.

You know, if episode 7 flops or preforms lower than expected because of him, starwars could very well be ruined for us OT fans, because no OT fan is going to trust anything coming out of lucasfilm.

If this is true, I don't expect lens flares. A good director will serve the franchise, not the other way around. Star Wars is too well established visually for someone to change the style that much.

The critics like whatever is in fashion this week.

Nemesis wasn't as bad as people made it out to be, JJ's Star Trek was nowhere near as amazing or different as people made it out to be.

Both are average Star Trek films.

Both resemble Enterprise in many ways.

The tide was turning against Trek around the time of Enterprise and Nemesis and turned onto the reboot craze by the time JJ's film came out.

If the critics decide it's time to stop slagging off Star Wars they will, even if this film is just as bad as ROTS or AOTC.

If JJ really is directing will he stick Simon Pegg in the movie somewhere, add lens flares and have Michael G do the score, instead of Williams.

Stuart Baird is a good editor and director, but his lack of familiarity with Trek was a liability. (The old rumor goes he thought Geordi was an alien!) Why Paramount didn't play it safe, and have Frakes direct again I have no idea.

Whenever i think of Baird i try to forget his work on trek and try to remember his work as an editor on Superman. Great Stuff.

Some of the negative reactions to the news over at Trekmovie are making me embarrassed to be an old school Trekker again.

At the end of the day, it's just a directing job. A dream one to be sure...

My feelings are mixed. I would have preferred Michael Vaughn or Spielberg. I didn't care much for the new Trek- I thought it suffered from "modern movie syndrome".

However, on a Star Wars movie it's not just the director- the script plays a big role and John Williams always plays a big role.

I am hoping that Star Wars 7 has a very different feel from "Star Trek" and that it takes chances artistically.

Its not like they asked Nicholas Meyer to direct star wars, JJ Abrams is The director of a star wars knockoff called star trek in 2009, and so hes offered star wars, big surprise there.

ST 09 was the best SW prequel.

The more I think about this, the more I'm convinced that this is as conservative as you can go for selecting the director. J.J. will certainly make his decisions and make the film in the way he prefers. However, I think Lucas and Kennedy wanted Abrams because they more or less know exactly what they're getting with J.J. (not in a bad way).

I just can't see J.J. doing anything spectacular with this. Entertaining, fun, etc. - sure. But I can't help look at Abrams as a company man in this situation.

Not thrilled about the news. Could be okay, or not. Didn't like Star Trek that much, although I'm not a ST fan (but I do enjoy TNG, which started its first rerun here, and that was a surprise for me, too). I just hope we don't need sunglasses to watch this movie, too. These should be story driven, not by effects. Star Trek was just too much in this area.

I don't get all of the love for JJ Abrams - I think he's a decent TV director and producer, but I feel like I'm living in some weird parallel world when people praise his Star Trek reboot. I didn't mind the concept, but the execution was atrotious and totally went against the whole mythos of star trek. The smug kirk eating the apple during the kobiashi maru, him driving a car over a cliff, Spock and Uhura... WTF? It was pretty and exciting but dumb - a play told by an idiot full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

In his defense he didn't write the thing.

Orci, Kurtzman and probably Lindelof did that (why do these all sound like Alex Raymond characters?).
