Looks like business is booming:

Pinewood Shepperton plc (“the Company”) welcomes today’s decision by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government to grant planning permission for PSDF.

Commenting on today's announcement, Ivan Dunleavy, Chief Executive of Pinewood Shepperton plc said:

“Our project builds on the success of the Government’s policy for the creative industries and addresses the shortage of stage space in the UK.  As a result of today’s green light from the Secretary of State, thousands of much needed new jobs will be created in this growing sector of the economy.  We want to begin construction as soon as possible.  I’d like to thank colleagues both within and outside the industry, for the tremendous support they have given the project.”

PSDF will secure the future growth of Pinewood Studios which will address the clear need for additional capacity in the UK.  It comprises doubling the existing Pinewood Studios by adding a total of 100,000 sq. m. of new facilities, including studios and stages, workshops and production offices.

The Company will continue to implement its existing planning consents at Shepperton Studios.

Tom Cruise? What, is R2 going to have a new friend?

One source said he was going to replace Harrison, another said he was going to have a cameo. Could he be the sequel trilogy's Mace Windu, the actor you're wondering why he took a small role who eventually gets bigger roles but still never really does anything?

It's the 'N Sync in AOTC rumor all over again. ;)

But as I understand it, 'N Sync were actually filmed. Lucas just took out their cameo when people complained.

Obviously apocryphal: Lucas would NEVER respond to complaints.

Like anybody would even know where they were in the shot. I doubt it would have been anything noticeable like Lucas' own cameo in ROTS as Papa Smurf.

Wait, AOTC was shot on film? ;)

Poor choice of words, obviously. No stocks of celluloid were harmed in the making of that pile. ;)

But apparently Lucas actually did film them and then cut them out after an Internet backlash: http://www.ign.com/articles/2002/01/11/nsync-not-nstar-wars-after-all

Go figure. Maybe it was because he was particularly sensitive to that sort of criticism at the time. After all, this was right after the release of TPM so visibly shattered the pedestal he was so accustomed to standing on. He probably grew a thicker skin as the prequels wore on.

Of all the stupid things to have an internet hissy fit about. It would have impacted the movie about as much as the cameos Lucas' kids have.

I almost want the Tom Cruise thing to be true now. Tweet a photo of him in a Star Wars costume just to mess with people. ;)

Ugh, that shot of him and his daughter hurts so, so much.  I wonder what I can do with it?

That's not even the shot that bugs me. ;)

Most movie cameos tend to go unnoticed.

As a certain droid has appeared in Trek '09 and STID, someone from those films needs to cameo in VII.

I'm only disappointed that Lucas chose to go with N'Sync. If you'd going to stick a famous band in your movie, stick in a famous band which doesn't suck.

Wasn't it one of his kids that asked to put them in the movie? Lucas probably wasn't even familiar with them.

As I recall, that was exactly what happened. It was one of his daughters--probably Katie, now that I think about it. I believe she was a teenager at the time.

This raises a question I've had for a very long time. Maybe Zombie explains it in his book, but what were the big things Lucas changed from his original plans for Episodes II and III after the big TPM backlash?

I don't know specifics about much else that was changed due to fan backlash. The biggest thing I can think of is Jar Jar being mostly shunted off to the sidelines (except for bringing in a dictatorship, great job there).
