Just thought of this issue, for all the EU fans.

Ep. 7 is going to come out and with it will be a bunch of tie in novels.  These will be new extended takes on characters featured in ep. 7.  Kinda like the prequel novels that centered on Obi Wan's training etc.

They are still coming out with EU novels but eventually these ep. 7 novels will take precedent.  They are probably being written write now.

Are these novels going to be EU since they are after ep 6? Most likely they are starting an alternate timelline.  So at some point Disney will have to announce the EU is done and this new timeline takes over.  So Mara Jade will be erased from existence...

As Doc Brown would say Great Scott!

I hope the EU writers use the upcoming overhaul of the EU as an opportunity to finally establish the existence of a greater SW Multiverse. There's no reason whatsoever for there to only be a single universe with a single timeline (and never has been).

Stories set in a universe in which Vader isn't Luke's father and Palpatine is a figurehead could be interesting.

I see what you did there.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Haha! I wish that was intentional. Your logic is flawless as ever Hal and I think your correct about the ae-35 unit we should replace it :)

Well technically there've been two for over a decade now. All of the stories deemed non-canon fall under "Infinities."

I just hope they wipe everything NJO and up.

I just don't see why any EU needs to be jettisoned. It's not like they need to bring any of it up in the movie. You don't need to have read Splinter of the Mind's Eye to enjoy The Empire Strikes Back.

And if you did, you'd wonder why Vader and Luke act like they've not battled before, and where the heck that pesky Kaiburr Crystal went. ;)

^That's why I prefer to believe the Vader Luke & Leia fought in the Temple of Pomojema was actually a phantom created by the Kaiburr Crystal and not the real deal. ;-)

So Vader was never actually on the planet? Who turned Grammel into bookends then?

That still leaves Luke and Leia acting in ways siblings ought not to, (thanks George!) and a crazy old lady who may or may not be a Jedi, running off with a Force controlling gem. You'd think Luke would want to keep both around...

Well, if none of that really mattered in the long run....

Like I've said before, there's stuff that can be retconned/explained away and there's stuff that can't. Splinter (which I've had a copy of for years but still haven't gotten around to reading) sounds like the former while Chewie being in Episode VII would be an example of the latter.

There's a difference between ignoring something and actively contradicting it. I can understand the viewpoint that keeping continuity with the EU isn't worth Chewie's absence in Episode VII, but I also don't see why an in-continuity Episode VII necessitates people having read any EU. It really wouldn't. To be honest, this is kinda why I didn't like the news that Abrams was changing the script to focus more on Han, Luke and Leia. I wanted this new story - whatever it ends up being - to be told more from the younger generation's pov, much like Abrams' first Star Trek movie or the original Star Wars before it.

He was on the planet. He just never fought Luke and Leia in the Temple.

As I've mentioned before elsewhere, the romantic tension between Luke and Leia doesn't bother me, as I don't feel as negatively towards incest as most others do (frankly, if two relatives actually love each other and there's no prior history of sexual abuse or coercion between them, I'm happy for them).

As for the rest, well, I accept the EU explanation that the Kaiburr Crystal loses its power the farther from the Temple it gets.

Billy Dee Williams is doing Dancing with the Stars.  He was asked on the show last night if he was coming back for the new movies, and he gave shrugged his shoulders and wouldn't say yes or no.

Could he be using Dancing with the Stars to get into shape for Episode 7 shooting this summer?

Well, if he wasn't in the movie, he probably would've said... right?

Nah he's getting in shape for the EpisodeVII's dance number. Max Rebo is still touring his old material.

I've got Lando Fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.

Dancing with the stars.... which is on ABC, which is owned by Disney, which now also owns Lucasfilm....

If I think about it for a moment I'll actually be pretty p*ssed if Lando isn't in EpVII while everyone else is. Not just because he's almost my favourite Star Wars character but if that character, who is jokingly refered to as "The only black guy in the universe", just happens to be the only one who they don't bother to ask back, it stinks (It's Harvey Dent all over again). Fingers crossed that Williams is just being tight-lipped and he has been cast.

btw Are the Droids gonna be in the ST? How do people feel about that? and would it 'still be Star Wars' if they weren't?

While I would prefer their presence, it isn't necessary.

R2 is the only confirmed cast member at this point.

Good as long as it is physical prop R2 and lovable OT Threepio and not CGI R2 and irritating PT Threepio.

Artoo and Threepio are pretty much a given since Lucas always joked "it's ultimately their story." As for Billy Dee, I can only assume he's gonna be in the movie. Abrams threw out Arndt's draft in part because he wanted to give the original characters a bigger role. Let's also not forget we've now got Lawrence Kasdan, the guy who helped write Lando in the first place.

Lucas has said almost from the beginning that Artoo and Threepio were meant to be in all the trilogies, even though the number of trilogies has fluctuated over the years. ;)

My opinion is the droids need to be in it. The only thing outside of the OT that ever felt like Star Wars to me was the 'Droids' cartoon. Which featured a host of different heroes, villains and situations with them as the one constant. They just need to used correctly in EPVII as the at-our-eye-level narrators they were in the OT.
