Proposed project: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV show) — Page 2

I saw the American remake before seeing the original Ringu, and I must confess that I also like the American version more. It seems, however, that those who saw the Japanese film first enjoyed it more. If you like the premise of the story, however, I strongly urge you to read the original novel "Ring" by Koji Suzuki, on which the movie Ringu was based. It's the first novel in a trilogy, I think -- at the time I read "Ring", the rest of the series wasn't available in an English translation, but that may have changed now so I should look it up again. I also have a box set of the original Japanese Ring movies (Ringu, Rasen, Ringu 2, and Ringu 0) still sitting in my drawer unwatched -- I should really get to that soon. (Maybe I'll have an idea for an edit! Who knows, hehe.)

I haven't seen any of the Japanese sequels, but I must say that the American Ring 2 was a travesty (though it was directed by the director of the original Japanse Ring -- what was he thinking?). The only thrill I got out of it was seeing Samara crawl out of the well in a manner that reminded me of Gollum in the LOTR movies.

I cut out the deer scene in Ring2 and this improved the movie a lot. The well climbing scene was awesome.
I should read far more (I make a note for next year new-years-day and add this to"do some sports").

I think that's so stupid that they call the Japanese movies Ringu over here. They are called Ring, just like here. It's just the Japanese way of pronouncing it. It really pisses off my friends that know Japanese.

Anyway, back on topic.. I think it would be cool to make these "movies" into sequels to the 1992 Kristy Swanson movie. I know I am probably alone in actually liking it better than the series, maybe because I enjoyed it so much after seeing it in the theater and seeing it so many years before the series started.

This wouldn't be that hard really, as the series sorta follows the movie anyway, other than the fact that in the series they say she burned the school down in LA. If you could remove the references to burning the school down and play up the comedy elements, you could make sequels to the movie. Buffy the Vampire Slayer 2. Somehow Kristy Swanson turned into Sara Michelle Gellar. Oh well, you could just pretend not to notice.

Oh well, this is probably a dumb idea.. Actually if you don't want to do this, maybe I will. I really, really, really like the Buffy movie for some reason. Maybe it's because I thought Kristy was hot in it. Well yeah, that. Cheerleaders are hot and stuff. I also really like the scene where she spit the thumbtack out and pinned the fly to the wall. I thought it was a really funny movie too. I know those weren't Joss Whedon's intentions, but I don't care. I think the studio or whoever made better decisions.

I find it so interesting how about every movie has its fans, even this one.

Yeah, I'm weird in that I like just about everything. Most movies and TV shows. As long as it includes at least one of the following: explosions, action, hot girl(s), martial arts, guns, comedy, horror, suspence, mystery. If it's boring then I probably won't like it. (About Schmidt comes to mind, or as I like to call it, About Sh** or About Boring.) I never knew people didn't like Blade Trinity until I saw the thread about the fan edit. I started to watch it last night for the first time (fell asleep as it was 2am) and I thought it was awesome so far. I only saw up until Dracula or whoever he is kills the people in the vampire shop. I can't wait to see the rest!

I would prefer to pretend that BtVS the movie never existed.

Well, I kinda liked the opening sequence (though it was too hurried and too cheesy) but then it went downhill from there, in my eyes.

For me it was a valley of downhillity.

For an Angel movie of Season 1, it's similar to Buffy season 1. Most of it is stand alone episodes. I would try to make the emphasis on Angel Investigations just starting out and coming together to form Team Angel. Doyle would be something of the heart and soul of the team and would get killed halfway through. Angel and Cordelia are left in mourning, the company in a state of void, and the challenge for them would be to build up from there. Introduce Wesley as a sort of replacement and then have Gunn as a sort of friend who comes to help the guys. Of course, play up Wolfram & Hart more and have them the main nemesis.

As far as Season Five goes, the first half of the season is episodic, but after that, it comes together to tell one of the best arcs of either series, so it may not be too hard.

shifty, congratulations on being ready for the trials!!!
...so I did miss something when I quit watching Angel after a few episodes of season 5...

I would give that honor to season 4 of Angel. Or possibly season 3 of Buffy. The whole Circle of the Black Thorn thing felt too forced to me, and I was disappointed that the shanshu prophecy never really panned out. I also hated how the cyborgs (or whatever they called them -- I know automatons were always called "robots" in Buffy but I don't remember what they were called in this Angel episode) that attacked Wolfram and Hart in season 5 -- one of which was disguised as Wesley's father -- were never mentioned again -- I would really have liked to know where they came from, what their mission was, etc.

Ilyria is awesome, though. Amy Acker got to show a whole nother side of her that she didn't get to do as Fred.

Maybe you could cut in some footage of Luke Perry from 90210 and pretend he's Pike from the movie. maybe have a flashback scene or something.

I guess it's different tastes, but what does it for me is the sheer level of emotion of the last part of Season 5. And I think it hits every note just perfectly.

You should probably suggest that in the "Buffy the Movie sequel" thread. The movie does not exist in the Buffy continuity, as far as I'm concerned.

It would be difficult (impossible?) to do, but what about creating a movie of the graphic novel The Origin? It's basically the movie with Sarah Michelle Gellar replacing Kristy Swanson and supposedly ties in with the series the way it was originally intended. I've seen parts of it (I need to find a copy for myself) online and it seems to fix the inconsistancies. For instance, the introduction of Merrick and Buffy is the same as the episode Becomming, Part 1 ("I'm destiny free, really.") and the school burns down at the end. I assume other things match up too, such as Buffy being a freshman instead of a senior.

That would be really interesting. I haven't read it but I should. Do you remember where you found the online excerpt?

Here you can see the front and back covers and flip thru a few pages. Kinda like the movie and kinda not. Still looking for where I saw the scene where she meets Merrick, but you can see it says "Destiny free" on the inside cover, which is never mentioned in the movie.

EDIT: Here is the page with Merrick from the Origin comic. This scene is based on the TV episode Becomming, Part 1, and not the movie, meaning it ties in with the series better.

From wikipedia:

Continuity

Canonical issues

Main article: Buffyverse canon

Buffy comics such as this one are not usually considered by fans as canonical. However, Christopher Golden used Joss Whedon's original script for the Buffy movie, and tied this comic series closely to continuity established by the television show. For example, the burning down of the gym takes place, which is mentioned several times on the show. For this reason, some fans argue that this comic deserves a place in canon.

* The story is framed not as actual events but how Buffy remembers them (she is telling Willow and Xander the story of how she found out she was a Slayer). This fact may help explain inconsistencies (for example, the bat-like appearance of the vampires). It is also possible she exaggerated the neglective behaviour of her parents.

* In the story there is the implication that the vampires required an inviation to enter the gym. Canon is divided over whether vampires need an invite to enter a public building, for example, in the episode School Hard, Spike invades the school with no invite needed, whereas in the same season in Passion, Angel tells Jenny he was invited by the inscription 'Enter all who seek Knowledge', so whether some vampires are simply mistaken over the technicalities of their vampiredom is unclear.

Timing

* Supposed to be set in Spring of 1996, several months before Buffy moves to Sunnydale in "Welcome to the Hellmouth". This comic stands in place of the Buffy movie, which is not considered to be canonical.

The writers, Scott Lobdell, Fabian Nicieza, and Paul Lee made a strong effort to offer a non-contradictory continuity filling the gap between the events of this comic, and "Welcome to the Hellmouth"

Very interesting. A couple of notes:

I think the best way to integrate the Kristy Swanson movie (if at all) is to consider it the kind of film some hack from the Buffyverse would make out of her 'story': "Nobody knows who The Master is. Didn't Buffy fight Dracula once? Let's work him in instead."

Depending on how far you're taking the continuity, "Ted" is not an entirely expendable episode since that's where the Buffybot technology comes from.

I think the second half of Season 7 could easily be cut down to two hours or so.
Author
Time
Actually Ted doesn't really have anything to do with the Buffybot -- it's Warren's original lovebot (I forget her name) that's more significant in terms of precluding the Buffybot.

Okay... I finally gave this a shot. For various reasons, I decided to tackle Season Six first.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

I have a working draft that's about 3 hrs 40 min long... I'll try to trim it down by a couple more minutes but I think it's found about the right length. The only "tampering" that I did with the footage is near the end (Episode 21) -- I left out the Rack character entirely (I felt that Tara leaving Willow was incentive enough for her to stop using magic), so the only way I could think of getting her into the Magic Box was to create my own teleporting effect, with lightning that ends up hitting Dawn, which explains why she collapses. I've uploaded an XviD clip showing that effect at http://rapidshare.com/files/12283107/Willow.avi.

I titled the movie "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Back from the Grave". Feel free to suggest anything better.

hey that was a funny and very trashy effect. But if for sure works!!!

I hope to release this within a week. Final runtime is 218 minutes... still a little shorter than the extended TTT. I used footage from every episode in the season except #7 (the musical episode... very regretfully) and #14 (Older and Faraway).

I can either release it as one double layer disc or two single layer discs... I think I'll do the former, and anyone who wants to split it up can do it on their own prerogative.

At the moment, my plan is to make an eight disc set... one movie per season, and an additional one comprising all the flashbacks (Angel & Darla, Spike & Dru, etc.) and other goodies that didn't make the actual movies. When the whole thing's done, I'll design a cover for an eight-disc case, but for now, someone else has graciously offered to design individual covers (and any other offers are welcome too).

I'm going to work on it sporadically, so it will probably be a long time before the set is finished, but that's the plan.
