I like most of these ideas, although your ideas for The Phantom Menace swing way too far back in the other direction for me. For ROTS, it’s worth pointing out that continuity with The Clone Wars pretty much requires the original “Plot to destroy the Jedi” scene at the war table. I got around this in my edit by including a heavily truncated version of the deleted scene that doesn’t repeat dialogue, and DominicCobb did something similar. I’d also want to see “I Am the Senate” make a return.

^ It’d be a version to show that factors in having to sell itself to existing fans of the original prequels.

Yeah, we’re out on a limb with this idea. It’s probably better for me to leave things as they are! Or possibly redo just the alternate version of LOE.

I think I’m just forgetting the guideline that the only judgement to care about is that of a hypothetical audience who hasn’t seen the original.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Hey, Hal. I’m about to attempt to deepfake some minor things in the Prequels. These include the poor CG double of Darth Maul when falling into the pit, the background fill in for Samuel L. Jackson at the end of Episode I, and the poor CG faces of Palpatine on the stuntman’s body in Episode III. Let me know if you’d like to see these and add them into your edits.

I’d certainly be interested in seeing the end results! Appreciate thinking of me, so I’d say let me know please.

Thanks, Hal. It might take a while before I can get them sent to you, though.

Would Dooku’s double be on your list too?

I’ll give it another look, but I don’t really think there are that many close-up shots of Dooku during the fights where it’s not Christopher Lee.

I also wish your PT edits had the original titles, because to me they work as fixed versions of the original films, not alternative cuts that seek to switch things up, which is the feeling I get by seeing them have totally different titles. Also when thinking of showing this to first time viewers, they’re still likely to be familiar with the original titles even if they haven’t seen the films, so it’s harder to sell these as the “definitive” cuts.

Yeah, I’d love to have the edits as is now, but with the original titles, including the alternate LOE which is my preferred version.

Maybe we need some revisionist history and just do a name change for your edits haha

The Phantom Menace: Reformed
Attack of the Clones: Enhanced
Revenge of the Sith: Refined

The Skywalker Saga:
I / II / III / IV / V / VI / VII / VIII / IX
This is the way.

I rather like the alternative titles, and especially when I think back to 2006-ish when I was first doing this.

It seems a little bit silly to release variants that only have that change, but I could perhaps just include only the full opening shot of each film so it’d be a cinch for anyone to cobble together if they so choose even if they don’t have easy access to the source. (They still need to own the source, but I’m thinking the schorman13 HDTV rips.)

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I think there’s some stuff to add back in, maybe not as much though. What about just these changes? Some of the more tolerable that is more of a mix between the theatrical and your edits:

TPM:

  • Use Sir Ridley’s crawl but stick with original TPM title.

  • Put back the battle droid dialogue to one other, starting when they talk before going into where the Jedi are.

  • Have them go underwater to Otah Gunga, but trim it up however you can. Only use the first part of the submarine trip. (Mixed on this, the cut works so well for the pacing in your current edit but adding back in makes this edit different enough)

  • Make sure to include “sitting ducks.” But can still trim up Ric being so delighted by that little droid.

  • Could put back some of Jar Jar’s handful of, “Muy muy” lines.

  • Recreate the theatrical version of the engine startup sequence for the most part, but still remove “me no watchin’”

  • Put back Anakin’s “yes!” after Qui-Gon says “these are yours”

  • Put back “you mean I get to come with you in your starship?”

  • If any cuts remain to the farewell to Schmi, undo them.

  • Put back Qui-Gon’s line, “Tell them to take off!”

  • Put back scene on Naboo where the Viceroy sits on his walking throne, originally removed because it references the underwater trip to Otah Gungah.

  • Put back scene where Obi-Wan apologizes to Qui-Gon and Jar Jar emerges from the swamp. Be sure to remove added line over shot of company approaching gungans.

  • Revise Jar Jar’s antics throughout the battle. (Keep it as is, but put back “steady, steady” line, “ouch time.” Also, when retreating, imply he’s riding away on the animal and is shot off and lands onto the tank, using a boomer.)

AOTC:

  • Use Sir Ridley’s new title crawl, but with the original AOTC title.

  • Put back Anakin losing his saber and being (more gently?) reprimanded for it. And conversation entering the bar.

  • Anakin can mention attachment being forbidden.

  • Yoda and younglings instead of Mace on platform deleted scene.

  • Put back little description of Boba Fett.

  • Put back Obi-Wan and Jango’s dialogue, including name drop of Darth Tyranus.

  • Put back angry Ani in the garage, but cut down his confession of a slaughter and blaming Obi-Wan, when he turns to walk away cut to when he sits down:
Anakin: “Why did she have to die? Why couldn’t I save her? I know I could have.”
Padme: “To be angry is to be human.”
Anakin: “I’m a Jedi, I know I’m better than this.”

  • When Obi-Wan reports to Yoda and Windu, put back Mace asking about the assassination of Amidala.

  • Maybe work harder to have only R2 leave the ship on Geonosis and save the day, as at least one other edit has done. Ideally not flying, though, as it’d be the only time in the films.

  • Put back the crowdpleasing saber duel with Yoda.

  • Sidious can address Dooku as ‘Tyrannus.’

ROTS:

  • Use Sir Ridley’s crawl, but use original ROTS title.

  • Put back line “this is where the fun begins.”

  • Use suggested order of scenes for the second act of the movie

  • Reorder dialogue for “The Senate scene”, if possible:
Mace Windu: In the name of the Galactic Senate of the Republic…
Palpatine interrupts with: I am the senate.
Mace Windu: …you’re under arrest, Chancellor.
Palpatine: Are you threatening me, Master Jedi?
    Mace Windu: Not yet.
    Palpatine: It’s treason then.

  • Reinstate youngling slaughter

  • Put back Obi-Wan and Yoda fighting to reenter the Temple.

  • Put back Kenobi and Yoda planning to destroy the Sith.

  • Keep trims to Obi-Wan and Padme, but add back in “killing younglings”

  • Redo Anakin’s and Padme’s conversation on Mustafar based on what makes sense now.

  • Reinstate Yoda duel, minding saber ignition sounds for consistency, and referring to L8wrtr’s version.

  • Put back dialogue about the ‘high ground’ at the end of the duel.

  • Film ends similarly to the theatrical, of course. Vader can still have his Russian yell, but Padme dies and we see her funeral, etc.

  • Try to keep the new shots that remove the droids from the twins’ birth.

The Skywalker Saga:
I / II / III / IV / V / VI / VII / VIII / IX
This is the way.

I really like those proposed changes and hope you follow through on these new edits. I’ve grown less critical of the prequels lately and something like your edits but closer to the theatrical with some of the deleted scenes sounds great!

Fun little fact/flub about Episode III.

In the shot where Anakin leaves Artoo by his starfighter on Mustafar to take care of the Separatists leaders, if you look closely when he puts his hood on, he’s not wearing his black glove on his right hand.

I wouldn’t say it’d required. We can just have two different scenes in two different media, instead of the same scene appearing in two media. I don’t think anything’s invalidated by saying both scenes happened in this “canon.”

Firstly I just want to say that your prequel trilogy did what I wouldn’t have thought possible: created three not just watchable but actually very solid movies. The fact that they don’t change the plot of the films while making them GOOD makes me happy beyond measure.

Episodes 1 and 2 are phenomenal. There are probably minor improvements that could be made, but I thoroughly enjoyed both of these in their entirety. With the EP 2 edit having an actually believable romance, the slowish fall of Anakin Skywalker in the first 2 acts of EP 3 feel not just believable but actually somewhat reasonable. Even him killing Windu in an act of desperation in the spur of the moment feels “right.”

But (There’s always a but), after that point it feels like things break down a bit. Anakin goes from someone indignant with his station and desperately trying to save his wife, resulting in him siding with the person who he thinks can do that, to killing children, his old friends, and even force-choking out his wife. It’s all too sudden. The dark side isn’t a switch you flip, it’s something you fall to - it doesn’t feel right to falling directly to abject evil.

I expect the answer to this is simply “there’s only so much an edit can do with the material we have,” and if that’s the case I think we can all lament this together. I’m interested in your thoughts here about whether there’s anything that could be / have been done to alleviate this further.
