The only idea I can think of to help support the ‘mask’ approach would be to change his appearance anytime Palpatine is disguised as Darth Sidious before the transformation. So when we see him with Maul on Coruscant in TPM, or with Dooku in AOTC, you could either desaturate his skin to be similar to his deformed look, or use deepfake technology to replace his regular face with the deformed face. It would be harder to implement this with hologram appearance (like his conversation with Grievous in ROTS or with Nute Gunray in TPM. Maybe you could obscure his entire face in darkness, or do something similar to what Ady did for ESB:R), but this idea could help make it clearer that Palpatine has always looked like that, but has just hid his true form with his ‘unlimited power’. But for LOE, I think it works fine and is still better than the theatrical, like Dom said. Might be something to consider in future edits though.

Yeah that would be a good solution, if feasible (unlikely, unfortunately).

I’d agree, but only for the hologram in Ep3, because of AOTC’s implication that he’s starting to deteriorate. It must have been somewhere between 2 and 3 that he started masking himself. At least if you go by that.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

I don’t think AOTC’s implication that he’s starting to deteriorate is that strong or obvious. He just looks like a normal old man for the most part. Maybe a little more palid than he does in Episode 3 but not significantly so.

The “mask” concept is not unprecedented in terms of canon material. I’m not sure about NEU’s stance on the topic, but the Revenge of the Sith novel features the following after Anakin disposes of Windu.

“And so the mask becomes the man,” he sighed with a hint of philosophical melancholy. “I shall miss the face of Palpatine, I think; but for our purpose, the face of Sidious will serve. Yes, it will serve.”

However, in the novelization, this goes hand in hand with the concept of being deformed by his own lightning reflected back at him.

And the circuit completed itself: the lightning reflected back to its source. Palpatine staggered, snarling, but the blistering energy that poured from his hands only intensified. He fed the power with his pain.

The yellow glare from Palpatine’s eyes spread outward through his flesh. His skin flowed like oil, as though the muscle beneath was burning away, as though even the bones of his skull were softening, were bending and bulging, deforming from the heat and pressure of his electric hatred.

In text, it does not come off as too “out there” (in my opinion) but in the film, it is not conveyed as well. This just supports HAL’s point that it all could have been portrayed better had the film actually set out to do so, rather than leaving it to supplementary material to go back in and patch up. With the available material in terms of footage, not much can be done.

Well in the old EU, the Darth Plagueis novel basically laid out Palpatine’s whole life story, which didn’t leave much room for ambiguity. When they were originally designing the make up for the Emperor in ROTJ, the goal was to make him look not old, but “ancient.” I always liked the idea that we weren’t ever really sure where Palpatine came from or how long he’s been around. The “mask” concept allows for that ambiguity to remain.

It is a somewhat intellectual explanation, granted, but also I tend to think if you watched the saga in release order that the sudden reveal, rather than the deformation, would make more sense. At least I remember when I was a kid I always thought that what we saw in ROTJ was his real face, and when he showed up in the prequels he was just hiding it.

Thanks for the kind words, and I’m glad that you enjoyed them. if you have access to myspleen, you may be able to find previous versions seated sporadically, no I have not maintained their availability myself. unless there’s something specific you’re looking for about them, most of what you’ll find is nearly a few steps backwards.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Hi there!

I have heard such excellent things about these prequel edits, and have managed to find working links to downloads for the first two episodes on fanedit dot info, however the link to the third episode does not appear to be active. I am wondering if anyone here might be able to point me in the right direction to finding it?

Appreciate any help 😃 thanks everyone!

With all the increased interest lately, you’re probably getting a message about a download quota being exceeded.

If so, see the FAQ there; try again later and you’ll be able to get it. The message doesn’t mean you can’t get it ever, but that you must wait a little while.

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Okay, thanks Hal 9000. I was able to get the link off of fanedit dot info, I meant that once I have done so the Google Drive it links to is listed as “offline” in the downloader, has been for the past week. But I can check back every now and then if that is the case.

Appreciate the help!

Oh, I see. I don’t think .info has been updated since I sent in the new links. Let me PM you the direct link.

Info probably has older versions, FYI. But I stand by V5 of Episode II being superior to V6, so that might not be a bad thing depending on how attached you are to the droid factory and Dex’s diner sequences (both are cut from V5 but present - though edited down - in V6)

Out of curiosity, how would I be able to tell what version the Info ones are?

I was under the impression they’d have the version numbers in the file names, but I might be mistaken. Hal, did you put version numbers in the credits or anything like that?

Only the documentation text file associated with each would tell you what version it is.
The versions on .info merely link to my Google Drive, and I only post the most recent versions because I don’t have that much more space.
If I myself wanted to get an older version, I would go to myspleen.

Ah okay, I wasn’t sure if .info had the Drive link(s) or something different.

Last time I checked, which was a little while ago, it had a working Drive link for Episode I, a working Torrent link for Episode II, and a Drive link that didn’t work for Episode III. I believe that is in queue to be updated, but hadn’t yet been done (that was about a week and a half ago).

The Episode II torrent is likely V5 or possibly earlier, then.

Proooooobably not worth mentioning, but in light of Palpatine having his skin melted/torn off his body from force lightning at the end of ROS, would it make sense to include Palpatine being disfigured from his force lightning in LOE? I feel like there’s always been an argument over whether Palpatine was hiding his true form prior to being “lightninged” in ROTS or if he was truly disfigured from the process. ROS seems to clarify that, but maybe I’m reading into it.

Also, I know you deeply want to leave these edits alone at this point so feel free to ignore this post.

To quote Palpatine, “please don’t!”

If anything I’d say TROS clarifies the situation in a way that fits better with LOE as is. In TROS when Palpatine is rejuvenated he has the melted look, which implies that is his true visage.
