I tried replacing “he came by this morning” with “he came by yesterday” in the apartment scene myself and I can confirm that I couldn’t get it to work seamlessly. It’s too bad, but I think I agree with Hal now that it’s impossible to integrate this scene while staying true to the goals of the edit. I guess that’s more impetus for me to create my own edit at some point…

EDIT: Actually, I can think of one way it could work. Just have Anakin’s “Obi-Wan’s been here hasn’t he” over the establishing shot of Padme’s apartment and cut in to Padme saying “he’s worried about you”

Hal, is there any chance we might be able to see a preview clip of the “plot destroy the jedi” scene integrated into it’s new place in the film before V6 releases? I’m curious as to how the music transitions will play. Additionally, are you planning to reintegrate the beginning of the council scene now that those two scenes are separated (disturbing is this move by chancellor palpatine…etc.) or will you still cut in on “you’re on this council but we do not grant you the rank of master”?

I included the full beginning of the Jedi Council scene, that’s right.
The scene plays very well. The balcony scene originally lead into Yoda’s counseling, and the following scene in which Anakin is late for a meeting, Obi-Wan is appropriately primed to be suspicious of Palpatine. I think the pacing sticks closer to the original film, much better than prior versions of LOE.

I noticed that it might be good to replace 3PO’s line, “I think I’m beginning to get the hang of this flying business” with something similarly spicy. It’s a callback to lines that will have been replaced in Episodes I and II: “I can assure you they will never get me onto one of those dreadful starships,” and “It’s just that I’ve never flown before.”
It’s not mandatory, but if there’s anything that seems appropriate to place there, it’d be nice to.

That sounds encouraging! If I come across a suitable 3PO line I’ll let you know. While you’re restoring dialogue, is there any chance you’d bring back Obi-Wan’s “you were the chosen one!” spiel? I understand the desire to focus on the personal in that moment but the lines are so iconic and Ewan MacGregor does his damnedest to sell them. It’s something I missed when thumbing through the edit recently.

If Mala is cool with it, borrow his audio for Anakin being appointed to the council, using an eerie Imerial March rather than Anakin rambling

I like this change, although I don’t love the use of non-Williams soundtrack bits to accomplish it. I know Siliconmaster482’s edit accomplishes this and trims Anakin even more without disrupting the music, so maybe that could be another source of inspiration to draw from?

EDIT: I can think of one remaining way the apartment scene could work after the third “seeds of rebellion” scene. Just have Anakin’s “Obi-Wan’s been here hasn’t he” over the establishing shot of Padme’s apartment and then cut in to Padme saying “he’s worried about you”. That way you sidestep the whole “he came by this morning” issue.

Let me open up the ‘you were the chosen one’ speech to the collective; what do you all think?
I originally removed it because I removed the prophecy aspect entirely, and left it out because I came to like it feeling more personal than philosophical. It’s not bad stuff.

I like Mala’s musical solution just fine, so I don’t want to overthink that one.

And I feel that’s working too hard to shoehorn the apartment scene in, so I’m fine leaving it out.

I think you’re probably right in your decision to exclude the apartment scene, I just enjoy brainstorming different options. I’ll stop bringing it up, lest I start sounding like a broken record.

When it comes to the whole chosen one/prophecy thing, what’s tough is its the central thing about the prequel movies with Anakin. Unfortunately, because of Phantom Menace that is why Anakin is taken as a young boy found by a Master Jedi since “he has no father” and the “Force is unusually strong with him.” So because of the first movie, you have to have it, Anakin is already on a pedestal, unfortunately, the original movies didn’t really touch on that at all since, well, it wasn’t needed.

The real question is if Rise of Skywalker will touch on this to kind of complete the topic/story behind the Skywalkers, starting with Anakin. If it does not, then the whole prophecy/chosen one is not needed. But again, it is tough to completely remove because of the first movie. It is strange in a way without it since it was kind of a big deal in the first prequel movie. I don’t think there is a clean way to completely remove that topic.

Even just TFA and TLJ seem to spiritually capitalize on it with Rey. It sounds like it’s a less iffy proposition to just put it back in.

One thing that’s important to remember is that whenever they talk about the prophecy, they talk about “bringing balance to the force,” something that’s mentioned multiple times in the ST even if the “chosen one” is not.

Author
Time

Absolutely. The ‘chosen one’ angle plays into Rey and Kylo Ren, just not in a technical, overt way.

Author

It sounds like it makes sense to reinsert the chosen one stuff then since that theme of balance is pretty over in the ST, which was the point of the chosen one prophecy.

Are you still considering to insert bone cracking noises as Anakin chokes Padmé?

I recall thinking about and discussing it here, and then reflecting the decision in the work Brent I have on my hard drive. However, in this moment and without a lot of sleep, I don’t remember what we decided!
I believe I did leave some bone cracking in there, but that it was rather subtle.

This was the work you made on the scene.

I’m fairly certain I retooled the cracking sounds and that a more subtle version is what will be there. 😃

Great. If you are to add in those sounds, they need to be very subtle and at a much lower volume to feel like it is part of the audio mix.

If you can wait just a few more days/weeks, a brand new and improved version of this edit will be coming out! I’d say it’s worth the wait.

I was curious if you were going to post a new version of the test of Anakin looking over the Jedi massacre. Is that going to be in V6, or is the most recent version that you posted going to be the one you’re using in the final edit?

Yes, the most recent clip I posted reflects what I’m intending V6 to look like.

Just putting out another call for anyone to help me try to find a replacement 3PO line for “I think I’m beginning to get the hang of this flying business.”
If you own the radio dramas for the OT, consider scrubbing trough some of it as I’ve done to no avail yet. I appreciate it; replacing it will cement the gently implied 3PO backstory into legitimacy.

If I manage to find time tomorrow I’ll give them a quick scrub!

I wish you would keep “I am the Senate” and “You were the chosen one! It was said you would destroy the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!” I thought that those lines worked well. In particular “I am the Senate” is a fitting historical allusion to Louis XIV’s declaration “L’etat, c’est moi.”

Hello!

Hal asked me to post this work-in-progress of an idea to add or remove a bandolier from Chewbacca in order to make him, well, not Chewbacca. Also tweaked his fur color.

I tried to take the most difficult shot, since he turns around in the middle. It’s very rough, but maybe good enough to get early feedback since there’s several shots that would need to be changed.

I didn’t see anything wrong with the second bandolier. I’d happily take that and a fur recolor, be it gray or reddish or whatever works. To me what makes him look like Chewie is the “costume” (of the character), and not his face. So if his name isn’t mentioned, he doesn’t particularly resemble Chewie in any other movie, and he’s dressed differently, I think it’s a safe bet to the audience not to infer that its him. And if you go on to see the other movies, there’s no reason for it to be him anyway.
I do thank you for trying a hand in this and I like it.

This is one change that I don’t mind a less than perfect implementation for. Have you SEEN some of the special effects in this movie? 😛
