Thanks for outlining the method you used :) It should come in very handy when i get to that stage :)

Buuuuut, I want the visor red ;)

As I recall you made that mockup by simply inverting the colour hues?

Why don't you make two versions one with inverted hues the other without. Adjust the 'normal' version to be more red shifted than blue shifted and rotoscope between the two?

That way Obi-Wan will have the correct flesh tones and the right saber colours will reflect off his clothing but Fett will have a helmet exactly like the one you created in your mock-up.

You may have to re-do the saber blade to keep the colour consistent with the rest of the film but it could work (very fiddly though).

Oh I intend to create a mask. That pic I posted was only testing out the first pass of colour correction - sorting out the ridiculous tints etc. I'm aware I won't be able to achieve anything near that old hue/saturation shift.

Anything involving more masks than just straight lines (to account for a wipe) will be done after it's all colour corrected and I have an accurate base to work from.

They're a LOT easier to make yellow, and I really dig yellow sabers. :-p

Some of them are a bit more violet and there is a bit of a green bleed in the first shot but that might be easier to work on than redoing the whole sequence.

I don't think the blue sabers were all the same hue in the OT so maybe there are slight variations between each one. So what, it's not that distracting and I'm sure people could come up with an in universe explanation if they wanted to.

I was actually considering deliberately making them multiple hues of blue anyway (to account for the variation we see between films and also to make the Jedi seem less stuffy and dogmatic all having identical sabers)

Of course this could be achieved by just leaving the green sabers in there, but I like the idea of it not being expected when Luke fires up his saber.

Also the multiple colours flying about on Geonosis makes the battle insanely chaotic. Too much going on.

In any case, I'd still like to work on getting some nicer recolours with no bleed through. It may be the case that I have to rerotoscope the closeups, as these appear to suffer the most.

My thinking too, especially the variation part. I still love the way they did them in the original Star Wars. Not a ton of color, just...bright! They look different from scene to scene both in color and intensity. They're supposed to use crystals, so they're not all using the exact same one anyway. Haha.

I've been looking into how to recolour all the green sabers in the arena to blue without re-rotoscoping over each and every one of them (a bloody nightmare!) and I've come up with this:

Cool! I like it!

When I said I might make them different hues for consistency, I was referring to ANH when Obi's and Luke's are different shades. So having at least those two would make sense as these two hues had already been established.

However, I've realised that Ady corrected this in ANH:R (though they do still look a bit different due to the different lighting in each scene)

So I think I'll be striving to make all the Sabers the same (more cyan) tone afterall.

In other news, I've been brainstorming a way to fix all the story and logic issues in the movie and I think I've come up with an even more radically restructured story. It is quite possible I'll finish this edit, then create this alternate cut too. If it weren't for wipes, it would even be possible to have both cuts selectable on the same DVD via seamless branching. Damn you Star Wars and your fancy wipes!

Well this edit is first and foremost for me :) And Revisited is the edit that I'll be watching from now on, so it makes sense :D

While I suppose it makes sense for all the Jedi to have different color sabers....realistically it looks downright goofy seeing so many of them onscreen at once.

I really like the idea of making them all blue or slightly different shades of blue. Visually that way looks less like a bunch of kids swinging around nerf swords.

Imagine a bloody WW2 battle with soldiers annihilating each other with a different color machine guns.

Well the colour correction is taking a backseat for the time being until i decide on what to do regarding the PAL 4% speedup. I was none the wiser about it (having grown up with PAL all my life) but now that I know about it, it annoys the hell out of me.

I've knocked up an example of the difference. The higher pitch of the PAL version is very obvious to me now.

Now I'm aware there are plenty of guides for converting PAL to NTSC, but what if I want it to still be PAL, but have it at the original speed?

Changing the speed of my entire project within my timeline won't work as it messes up my cuts, and any shot changes where there are no cuts, it blends the images together for a split second (due to the necessary extra frames in making the footage longer)

From what I've gathered from reading Ady's ANH:R thread, he didn't change the speed, but simply corrected the aspect ratio and pitch for his NTSC DVDs.

Anyway, enough whining. If someone can shed some light on how best to go about this, that'd be great. Here's a clip I've been sitting on for some time as a reward for anyone who's still reading :-p

Yeah, I'd ask someone like Adywan or Darth Editous for some pointers about the PAL to NTSC dealio.

Nice clip. Reminds me to ask about another possible sound replacement issue: are you planning to do anything about the creatures in the arena? I pretty much fast forward that whole scene every time because I loathe the way those things sound, especially that big green thing. Someone experimented with it before, giving it a normal growl/roar, but I forget who... It was like music to my ears! ;)

What programs are you using for most of your editing work Brash? If its Sony Vegas, I can help you bypass the speedup.

I'm afraid it's Final Cut Pro, Bob. I basically want the movie in its original intended speed and pitch no matter which format it's in. I want a PAL release that's not sped up or high pitched, and likewise I don't want to settle for a mere pitch change when I convert it to NTSC as you folks in NTSC land are sure to notice it even more due to being used to no speedup.

As I've said, I've been able to slow it down 4%, but any scene change ends up with a slight fade due to the merging of frames on the added ones and it ends up overlapping at each cut.

A possible but time consuming solution would be to cut every single shot change, drag them all apart a distance one by one. Then do the slowdown and close all the gaps........I doubt I have the patience for that though.

Sorry forgot to reply to you there Ripplin. Yeah I definitely want to change the noises somehow. They're really terrible. I remember someone changing the Reek's roar to that of the T-Rex from Jurassic Park, and whilst it was much better than what it was originally, it broke immersion for me, it being obvious where it was from.

I'll have to look into some sound archives packs. Or even try my hand at mixing some myself a la old school Ben Burtt:)

Yeah, it would be great it it wasn't so obviously from something else, but something really different that it is now. Wouldn't necessarily have to be a huge t-rex roar, either, as that thing seems to be at least part insect or crustacean.

I should think about replacement roars too, as, although I'm not an editor (yet), it is one of the things that bugs me the most about the movie and it wouldn't hurt to give replacement sounds some consideration. (though, if I know where it's from, or if it's a pretty iconic sound, I'm gonna see where it's from every time. :p)

Even if you can isolate the scene changes, the blurring of frames mid-scene will still ruin the flow of the video - it may not be immediately obvious, especially if viewed on a 60Hz monitor, but play it next to the original on a TV and I think you'll see what I mean. If I had to do this, I'd leave the video as it is and pitch-shift the audio, though that will never be perfect either, as it tends to introduce clicks and/or warbling.

Thankyou DE! So in your releases (I'm assuming PAL sourced) do you just leave it as is? i.e. same speed and same pitch?

What about your NTSC releases?

Yup.

I just resampled the PAL audio to NTSC speed/pitch (95.904%, though it should have been 95.9040959040...)
