Star Wars Episode II: The Approaching Storm (Released) — Page 15

Yes, that is correct. Unfortunately, the establishing shot from the deleted scene itself was very much unfinished. I figured it’d be okay to try and get away with using two different establishing shots of Palpatine’s office and hope no one notices. But, you are correct.

I find that in the first ten minutes of this edit there are some minor issues. At the beginning of the movie Cordé still has Padme’s voice during the ship’s approach. Cordé says she is sorry, but she did her job well by being her decoy, so there is no reason for her to be sorry. The establishing shot before the senate scene is the wrong building, Natalie’s acting is terrible in the senate sequence. You will always be that little boy on Tatooine is a terrible line of dialogue.

Actually she’s a fine actress, with the exception being her SW films.

Just finished watching the fan edit.

Like Cloak of Deception, I think you made good decisions with your cuts and use of the alternate scenes.

The movie was much more watchable and improved on the relationship … which was greatly needed.

Fanstastic work Hal, thank you!

One of the worst things about this movie for me is that Anakin basically turns to the Dark Side when he murders the Sand People. I remember seeing it the first time and thinking ‘well, I guess he’s evil now’. Then he admits this genocide to Padme, and she says, and I quote “To be angry is to be human.” Um, what? The guy just confessed to genocide.

So one idea I had to fix this is was that the slaughter could be played as a dream.

How it might work:

End Shmi’s death scene before Anakin becomes genocidal, then cut to Obi-wan’s story for a bit. When it cuts back, the nightmare scene from Naboo happens here, recolored to appear more in line with the interior of the homestead. It might actually help sell the idea to have Yoda picking up on his pain during this scene. Then we have the garage scene, and remove the present tense ‘they’re dead’, which implies that it wasn’t just a dream. Leave everything else that is in the past tense. Since there’s still some ambiguity as to whether it was just a dream, one final change would be a cutaway to Padme after she asks what’s wrong, where Anakin says ‘nightmares’.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Interesting idea, and I agree about Anakin practically turning to the dark side at that point. And Padme’s character is shot as soon as she goes along with Anakin after knowing what he did. As I was working on V1, I initially planned to have Schmi already be dead when Anakin arrived on Tatooine.
That’s an interesting idea, though I don’t think it’ll be good for my edit in particular.

Hey Hal, I know you are tinkering around on your other prequel edits, is this one being touched/polished like the others?

I love this fan edit. The political context is clearer, Anakin is actually likable, his romance with Padmé is actually believable. The dialogue is a thousand times better.

My only problem with it is without the droid factory scene it seems almost as if Anakin and Padmé are purposefully walking to their deaths without a fight, and it seems weird Anakin never pulls out his blue lightsaber in the arena. I preferred L8wrtr’s treatment of the droid factory scene in The Republic Divided.

All in all, this is my go-to edit.

Is it too late to suggest an alteration in the opening crawl? A minor thing, just the way the first paragraph is structured.

Instead of “In the decade following the Invasion of Naboo, dissidence has fragmented the galaxy. Over a thousand solar systems have revolted against the Republic.” Make it “Dissidence has fragmented the galaxy. In the decade following the invasion of Naboo, over a thousand solar systems have revolted against the Republic.”

I see where you’re coming from, but I prefer it the way it is already. I don’t want every crawl to begin with “It is a quick sentence in the galaxy.” I know ANH and ESB did it that way, as does my Ep1 and Ep3, but I think it’s good to have one of the three prequel crawls NOT do that.

Fair enough. I like it the way it is anyways.

Are there any shots in this movie where it’d be worth it to try to rotoscope the necklace in?

If any, the secret wedding at the end would probably be the best narrative-wise.

The Skywalker Saga:
I · II · III · IV · V · VI · VII · VIII · IX
This is the way.

Indeed, there is a close-up on them kissing where tthe necklace could be included. But it would be so damn difficul to do…

Ah found it! If there is a final copy for this, can I receive the download?

Dude. No need to spam all three threads. Send a private message to HAL, he’ll help you out. But like I said in the other thread, he’s working on version 5 right now, which should be out before too long, so you should probably wait for that instead of getting version 4.2 or earlier.

And I’m sure there will be an announcement in all three threads when version 5 of each is finished.

Having said that, the previous versions have all been stellar (they’re my preferred PT edits by a wide margin), so it’s not like getting v4.2 will be a poor quality product or anything, but I’m sure version 5 will be the best possible iteration and well worth the brief wait.

Agree with Ash.

The only possible touch up with these edits would be someone with a ton of time and know how to polish up some of the deleted scene footage. Some of those scenes are a bit visually distracting, but are MUCH better scenes then what the official release from Lucas.

But that is not necessary, just a way to make it PERFECTLY polished.

This is still THE go to prequel edits.
