Star Wars Episode II: The Approaching Storm (Finished!) — Page 19

I honestly prefer that the droid factory action sequence was removed entirely. The use of the deleted scene involving Padmé meet with Dooku definitely helped things flow much better. The droid factory sequence was an afterthought by George Lucas while he was on a conveyor belt and decided to shoot the scene after the film was story boarded (it was added in later, but after they shot the scene). The only reason why they added it in was because they didn’t think the film had that much action in it. Mike J. Nichols even comments on this in his commentary to Attack of the Phantom where the Obi-Wan and Jango Fett chase through Geonosis’ ring was added in last minute as well.

For reference, here are l8wrtr’s takes on the droid factory and garage scenes (I think of the edit’s I’ve seen, his were most successful in editing down these scenes):

droid factory: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1L3RMhiG8debz1CUCKgM0gYHrHrN0MUME
garage: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1pHLbsJiDweog5gohQGNZTS5ZIuVI4FvX

Personally, I would vote to add the droid factory but keep the garage scene out.

Thanks for sending those, I see what he did with the droid factory scene. Hmmm, works much better than the original cut Lucas had. Not saying it has to be there, but, I admit it works pretty well.

The garage scene was edited well. But, what I appreciate on not having any of it is Anakin in the official movies is just to whiny and cringy. Granted, that moment is understandable since his mother died and all, and his conflicted conscience on his actions … but, the portrayal in Hal’s edits is a bit of a more likable character and not so whiny, cringy, and plain un-likeable. My opinion anyway.

Oh, thank you for posting the clip of the droid factory scene; that’s very helpful.

I think that would help sell this as a polished finished product, only because without it there is something missing that you would expect a film to have to address the apparent meekness with which Anakin walks into death. I think the scene is unnecessary, save for the sheer fact that I don’t have any usable footage which could serve in that capacity.

So you won’t be using it? I’m sorry if I’m misunderstanding it. I vote for inclusion of both, to be honest. Not that there’s any vote to be had here though 😛

I meant that I may use it, but that were it not an option to keep the droids out of it, I would not have reinstated it and allowed it to be a little fan-edity in order to keep the nonsense cleanly out.

+1 for the droid factory

I think I have a good idea for the Anakin/Padme scene in the garage that you should give a second chance.

Scene flow:
Padme: "you’re not all powerful
Anakin: “well I should be!”
Cut to Padme saying “Anakin!”
Cut to angry Anakin calming and sitting down and saying he should be better that this even though you can tell he is questioning it

Padme just sees it as him lashing out after his mom died and comforts him but what the scene really shows is the conflict building in Anakin that he wants to be more powerful and that as a jedi he shouldn’t think that way. It plays well into your version in LOE and starts to hint at Anakin’s turn to be more powerful.

Just a thought!

Here’s something simple you could add in. You could add a subtle Darth Vader breathing at the end of the credits. This is something that is in The Phantom Menace. The only edit of Episode II that I know of that also does this is Attack of the Phantom.

I’m honestly stunned so many people are advocating for the PS2 cutscene droid factory and garage scenes…

Anakin’s confession is the heart of that scene; it seems pointless to me to reinstate part of it and leave that out.

I’m no fan of the droid factory sequence, but I can see the continuity drive for it at least. And I’m NOT committed to it as of yet. I still think it works reasonably well to suppose Anakin and Padme go all in for diplomacy after finding the only door they could.

Guys, I did an AOTC edit in 2004, and so I have a long history of kicking the droid factory to the curb. Perhaps I best honor the textual lineage of this and all prequel edits by doing so now.

Or maybe I should go to bed and consider more than 5 hour sleep lucky.

Yes, me too. The reason I’m advocating for the droid factory scene to be reinstated is simply because that’s still one of the very few moments in Hal’s trilogy that feels slightly fanedity.

By the way, I believe I’ve asked this before, but is the audio transition from the sunset kiss to Kamino more “smoothable” ? It’s one of the roughest cuts. It works just fine the way it currently is, but if still improvable…

I do agree the factory action scene is one of the lowest points of the Saga, but at least with its droid non sense removed I think it works well to transition from getting off the ship to Dooku’s meeting. I would however keep the saber destruction, just to clarify Anakin has no choice but to surrender.

Hal, since you’re going to put back some Drax/Dinner scene, wouldn’t it be a good opportunity to insert the droid toxic dart analysis deleted scene ? I remember it was sfx finished. Well, not sure about that.

“I have to say that I felt George’s group of six films had more innovative visual imagination, and this film was more of a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before, and it took a few baby steps forward with new characters.” - James Cameron about Episode VII.

^ lol @ a quick transition to being executed.
Honestly, even the L8wrtr version of the scene has some awkward audio, with the music hopping back and forth. It’ll probably come down to whether I can pull off something better, and so I’ll try once I’ve cleared room to get Ep2 ready once pushing any one in-progress edit out the door (4, 5, 1, or 3!)

While I could add the droid analysis deleted scene, it’d be another low resolution scene, and it doesn’t really add anything. I like that we’ll be getting back Obi-Wan’s dismissive line about droids, which sort of helps explain him not remembering R2 or 3PO in ANH.

Oh, and the kids transition audio is the part where originally their kiss was interrupted. The following establishing shot has a single sort of high note to set a tone of intrigue, and I think having the full love theme fade over it would be jarring. At least what feels slightly off is original to the movie, but I know it’s not quite perfect. I like to think it speaks to the kiss being ominous.

My vote is to keep out the garage scene completely and use l8wrtr’s version of the droid factory scene (or something similar).

The garage scene is unnecessary because, without it, it’s never actually established that Anakin killed the women and the children, or even all the men. For all we know, he could have simply killed the ones responsible for his mother’s death, and any others that attacked him as a result, before the rest ran away. And I don’t think Anakin needs to be shown expressing guilt if he only went after the ones that tortured and killed his mother.

Hahahah, that is pretty amusing and would be curious to see.

But please, the garage scene is completely unnecessary and goes against Anakin’s adjusted character through Hal’s edit. Watched the movies (minus LOE since ran out of time) and the wife said Anakin is such a whiney character and appreciated how it was toned down in TAS.

The droid factory scene that was edited is a big improvement from the original scene. I am going back and forth in my mind what would be better, that or the deleted scene … both have their pros and cons. However, the above suggestion would be interesting to see too.

Please, no droid factory scene. It’s probably the worst scene in the movie. I like Hal’s approach to removing the scene as is.

I apologize if some of my posts have been terse lately. Most of the time, the reality is that I only have one free hand to punch keys with. I appreciate the fervent discussion very much, because it makes for the best possible, most informed final product. I am also tossing around the droid factory in my head, but have no intention at all to reinstate the garage scene.

That’s alright. We all think your Star Wars work is fantastic and are contributing to help you make new versions/edits.

On a side note, if you were to include the garage scene, there is something that could be done that I believe only seciors has done. That is to put the scene in a different spot.

Haha, but seriously, I am glad Hal is going the direction of not reverting back to the garage scene in anyway.

Thats an interesting idea, I have to watch it, to see how it works.
But one tiny little problem I see is that you would mess around with their costumes A LOT, but hey Padme is changing her dress all the time anyways.

How do you actually watch this? There’s a dead link to iTunes and a YT trailer without it hosted… this is… disappointing.
