Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Extended Edition

So this is something I’m toying with creating as a companion to my Revenge of the Sith extended edition. Like with that edit, I’d like to only add scenes that I feel help the movie rather than adding in every bit of usable footage. I’ve added my preliminary thoughts on each scene but I’d appreciate input on what people would most like to see.

DVD Deleted Scenes:

Padme addresses the Senate: Yes
I feel like this scene adds helpful context to the political plot. I might use Hal9000’s slightly edited version since it removes close-up shots of JarJar that have dodgy vfx.

Analysis Droids: Maybe
I don’t feel like this scene really adds much to the narrative, but it does look to have finished vfx. I would appreciate input on how people feel about it.

Extended Stroll on Naboo: Yes
Discussion of Padme’s family complements the dinner scene nicely.

Conversation with Mace on the landing platform: No
This is basically an alternate take of a scene that’s in the movie. Works well for fanedits that exclude that scene but I think it’s redundant to include in an extended edition

Dinner with Padme’s family: Yes
This scene is pretty much my reason for making this edit. It’s definitely going in.

Padme’s bedroom: Maybe
Idk about this scene. It’s a bit cheesy but so is a lot of this movie.

Meeting with Dooku: Yes
Nice to see Padme actually attempting a diplomatic solution

Geonosian Trial: Maybe
The vfx on Poggle looks dodgy to me in this scene and I’m not sure it adds much.

Blu-Ray deleted scenes:

The Lost Twenty: I really wish I could include this scene but the vfx are just too dodgy. This is the best restoration effort I’ve seen but I don’t think the flashback style really fits in a Star Wars saga film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2ENkNIOOZ4

All others: Imo, none of the others really add much to the movie and their quality is all pretty rough.

Other scenes:

The lightsaber fight from Kenobi was really well-integrated into Spence’s edit but since it’s not truly a “deleted scene” I’m not sure whether it should be included. Thoughts?

I appreciate you so much for doing this. I’ve been waiting for a project like this for almost a year now.

Regarding the Kenobi scene, if you have the space, I think it would be worth making two different versions. If you don’t have the space, then I would be willing to host the one with the Kenobi scene. I just need to go back into the thread for this topic because there was an individual that just recently created a very good, uncut version of it with music and everything.

Regarding the other scenes, I agree with most of your judgments. The analysis droids scene I’m leaning toward “yes” on because of the VFX being finished, especially given that Dex references the Jedi analysis droids and Obi makes a joke about them.

Padme’s bedroom I’m also leaning to “yes” on only because it serves as an analogy of Anakin himself. Padme talks about how the kids couldn’t adapt to their new environment and died as a result. Anakin is also unwilling/unable to adapt to change and loss and as a result he dies and Darth Vader is born.

The Geonosian Trial I’m leaning toward “no” on, mostly because Dooku’s last line in the previous deleted scene was “I’ve done all I can for you”. Obi was seemingly never put on trial, either. I think it’s fair to assume that Dooku is the deciding vote here, even if he’s acting like it isn’t. The VFX being unfinished is also a major reason for my opinion.

I wonder if the Mace platform scene could be edited to remove the duplicate parts. I think the scene could help with pacing when integrating more Padme/Anakin content. I liked that Mace is more positive about Anakin future in it and it offers a nice contrast with the way he feels in ROTS.

There is some VFX issues in the background of the Mace and Obi-Wan scene, though. That’s a large part of the reason why I’d prefer it to be excluded, beyond being redundant with the other scene. There’s also the fact that Mace Windu seems strangely cool with Anakin and believes in the prophecy in this scene. Which conflicts with his characterization in both episodes 1 and 3. I suppose it’s possible the Clone Wars made him lose some faith in Anakin but it is nonetheless quite jarring.

I mean the temple scene with Yoda and Obi Wan has Mace say remember, he is supposed to bring the Force back into Balance, so that part is still here in the actual movie.
Fair point about the VFX.

I suppose that’s true, but the line I was actually thinking of was: “Obi-Wan, you must have faith that he will choose the right path”. It does seem awfully out of character for the guy who is always doubting and dunking on Anakin. One of his lines in ROTS is literally “I don’t trust him”.

With what happened in the Clone Wars, mostly toward the end it is a fine starting and end point IMO. But anyway the scene is not essential, I just always wanted to see it edited down to see if it would work.

Good news. GregKnight06 is willing to contribute his version of the Kenobi scene for this edit!

Spence’s version of the scene omitted several parts that I think would be integral for an extended version of this movie. Namely, the hypocritical lines from Obi-Wan about his need for victory blinding him and his need to prove himself being his undoing. I think those are perfectly in character, seeing as how one of his other famous, hypocritical lines is “Only a Sith deals in absolutes”.

The one thing I always hated about this movie was that there are two scenes where Anakin is always complaining about Obi-Wan to Padme and claiming that he’s holding him back. But that’s only what we’re told, and we aren’t shown much of anything to really suggest that. As a result, most people just think he’s whiney and entitled. But with the Kenobi scene in place it becomes way easier to empathize with his character.

A similar thing will likely happen with the deleted scenes between Anakin and Padme which show their chemistry better and have normal dialogue. I think once you’re able to buy into their relationship initially, it becomes a lot easier to look over the awkward and cringey stuff that happens when they start getting much closer later on.

Long have I waited for a project like this 😉

Padme’s bedroom - I think I wouldn’t include this one. It’s terribly cheesy and it doesn’t add anything meaningful to this movie.

Geonosian Trial - if it was up to me, I would keep it.

The Lost Twenty - In my opinion you should add it. I agree that it may feel a bit off for a Star Wars movie to use this kind of flashback, but this short scene adds a lot to the film. And the flashback itself could be probably shorten easily. Besides, Qui-Gon is barely mentioned in the Episode II. From a perspective of someone who watches SW for the first time, in the chronological order, it could be kinda weird that the guy who was basically the protagonist of the first movie, a mentor to both male protagonists of the sequel, and a student of the movie’s antagonist, is barely mentioned in the film. So this mention + a little flashback could actually work pretty well in terms of narrative and continuity.

About the Kenobi scene - as much as it didn’t fit in “Kenobi” at all, I believe it would be a great addition to AotC. It establishes pretty well the complex relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan. It shows Anakin’s temper and arrogance, it actually gives some more context to Anakin’s perspective about Obi-Wan holding him back, and vice versa, when Obi-Wan believes Anakin is too reckless and short-tempered.
I think this one should definitely be included.

What about the extended Jango Fett death scene? Looks great with the finished VFX.

Darn, ya beat me to it.

I also recommend taking a look at the extended version of Boba grabbing his father’s helmet from the Book of Boba Fett show.

EDIT: And since we now have a different perspective on the Padme’s bedroom scene, I will admit that I don’t think it’s strictly necessary. I just think there is some cool foreshadowing there in regards to Anakin and it’s another scene where the two are acting relatively normal with each other.

Here’s an alternate take I found on the Lost 20 scene that cuts it down further to use basically only finished footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIQTcvtHvhw

At that point though, I’m not sure if it’s even worth including. Thoughts?

I believe the scene itself is worth including, but only if it’s possible to include the whole dialogue, as it’s a great backstory for Count Dooku.

I think the version with the flashback would work better (although maybe using different scenes from the Episode I, and without the retro-filter).

I agree that it is some much needed context. But it is an awful long time to hold on one shot. And the trouble is finding appropriate live-action scenes if you were to do a brief flashback.

Another thing to consider is that the audio transition from the end of the deleted scene back to the normal scene isn’t fully there, either. The “vibration” noise (I don’t know what else to call it) of the archives sort of just appears again when the deleted portion is over.

I’m personally in favor of including everything that’s non-redundant and has finished FX. If the duplicate lines can be edited out, I’d like the Mace Windu one for showing off a more optimistic side of him in regards to Anakin to counterbalance he how treats him in ROTS. I also like the Padme bedroom scene as a hint of looming darkness.

I also like the Dooku statue scene but I’m a little iffy on the unfinished FX and the low-res statue close-up. Best version I’ve seen is by Mecha Salesman.

I think it’d be very weird to have scenes from a cartoon in a live action movie.

So far, I think the best possible version would be something similar to a video with flashbacks of Qui-Gon that was mentioned in the OP.
