Star Wars: Deleted Magic (Released) — Page 4

Well, after a long break, I put in some extra hours the last day or two, and I've now added an extra half-hour to Deleted Magic.

I'd say my deconstruction of A New Hope is nearly complete.

I've edited the scenes on the Death Star and am about to start the Yavin material.

With all the major deleted scenes already taken care of, you might say, well, what else is there to cover? Isn't a half hour a little excessive?

Of course it is. But I love you guys, so I go the extra mile to deconstruct even the little things in entertaining ways.

Among other surprises ... I use the original audition tapes!

I know you'll love it.

We'll see about a release on the web in the next few days hopefully. I am planning to do a DVD release pretty soon ... Although to do the proper DVD release I want to, I'll have to do a LOT of extra editing, do the documentary part of the film and cover Empire and Jedi at least a little bit.

Well, we'll see. Maybe a half-assed ANH Deleted magic DVD first. =)

Honestly, I can't wait for this. I already think this is one of the coolest things ever done for a SW fan DVD, it's going to bring me back to my days of grade school reading all those early drafts of SW...

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

I said I'd edited another half hour of Deleted Magic.

Make that a full hour.

My deconstruction of the first Star Wars is now complete.

It probably runs about an hour and 40 minutes, or so ...

Quite long ... also quite complete. Even die-hard Star Wars fans ought to discover some interesting new things from this one ... or at least have fun with the film in a new way.

I could release this on DVD ...

but I am planning on doing featurettes on the major deleted scenes, and extended featurettes on Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi first. As well as a still picture gallery detailing lots more deleted scenes info.

We'll see!

Jedikev .... The DVD will probably be out soon enough. I'll let this site know when it is ... those who want it can email tygerbug at yahoo.com when I've made that announcement.

Yes, the final DVD will be feature-length. I want to put some extra stuff into it because I want to make the ultimate Star Wars deleted scenes DVD to date. Dig that.

Now - why is the new part of the Star Wars deconstruction so long? Well, there's lots of good stuff there, including a new version of the final trench run down the Death Star. The scene is presented in its entirety, except that it's all in the original scripted order ... a very different, and rather strange, experience.

You'll meet the original Wedge, and the original ... Wilhelm?

I can actually use some help on the still pictures galleries, if anyone wants to chip in to this project a little bit.

The idea is to present a bunch of slideshows of still images, and as the viewer clicks through them he'll read script excerpts and descriptions and of course see photos from the deleted scenes ... especially for ESB and ROTJ, where most of the deleted scene info we have is still pictures and script excerpts rather than rolling video.

If you'd like to contribute a "visual essay" to the still pictures gallery ... get photos together and provide your own comments on certain deleted scenes, you can send it to me, and I'll use it in the DVD.

Images can be gotten from starwarz.com/tbone or wherever else ... as well as from the official DVDs and the Definitive Collection laserdisc.

Interesting Star Wars related photos also accepted.

Our font is Adobe Caslon, bold. Background should be a simple starfield. The Deleted Magic logo can be seen at starwarz.com/deletedmagic.

Images should be done at 800 x 600, then resized to 720 x 480 and saved as a JPEG ... compressed as little as possible (quality level 12 in photoshop).

I'll probably have some examples online soon.

You can email this to tygerbug at yahoo.com ... with the images in a zip file.

Cheers!

I can't wait for this! Does it contain the opening scroll from the "Lost Cut"?

If you go to Starwarz.com/deletedmagic ... you can see the original rough version of my Deleted Magic opening crawl.

Which has since been redone in glorious CGI by Shadowman. =) Along with the opening shot ... restored to its pre-2004 glory.

It is NOT the Lost Cut crawl. It is the 3rd draft crawl, which I thought was cooler.

I have a copy of a Lost Cut crawl that someone rendered perfectly, but in low quality ... I wanted to include it as a special feature on the DVD, but I don't have a good version of it.

Yet.

Maybe if someone does one for me ...

Incidentally I'm still looking for some full-quality captures of the Jabba, Treadwell and Alternate Cantina scenes from the Behind the Magic and Making Magic CD-ROMs ... captured directly from the screen.

I also need a high quality version of the original Wilhelm ... from an old (1953) movie called The Charge at Feather River. Now there's an obscure request for ya. =) I got it from a web-quality (Sluggo-provided) MOV file compiled by Pablo Hidalgo ... now an official site in the know kinda guy ... who I don't know personally. Hm.

(For those of you asking who Wilhelm is ...)

Not sure what constitutes "high quality" but there's a 172KB .WAV file on this page.

Incidentally, the infamous scream was heard even earlier in Distant Drums (1951).

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Oops, I totally forgot about that. Are the ones on T'Bones site not good enough?

By a high quality version of the original Wilhelm ...

I meant video from the film "Charge at Feather River."

Not an audio file. You can get audio of Wilhelm from anywhere.

And yes, I have the BTM and MM CD-ROMs. I also have full-quality captures of the Biggs scenes from the BTM CD-ROM.

However, I need full-quality captures of the others. The captures I did myself were done to VHS years ago and are not the best quality.

Good idea, Neil! I hear there's SOMETHING from that film in there. Maybe if I see it at Blockbuster ....

In other news, I have decided to release a bare bones version of just the first Star Wars deconstruction on DVD.

I am still planning on doing documentaries on the major deleted scenes, and sections on Empire and Jedi, along with lots of special features ...

But this is a simple version for those who want it already, and so I can get some feedback on what I've done, and fix the film and add to it before I put a better version out, sometime in the future.

It allows me to spend more time on the final version of the DVD and not worry about deadline. =)

This DVD will contain some special features ... NOT the making of documentaries, JediKev, since it IS a making of documentary when you think about it.

For those, please contact Rowman ...

The extended Lapti Nek video will be included, as will an extensive still picture gallery of deleted scenes (although not nearly as complex as the one that is in the works for the better version) ... Probably a few other special features as well ... The "Light the Sky on Fire" music video by Jefferson Starship will probably be on there, for reasons that will become clear when you watch the entire film. =)

The DVD version has a new introduction and trailer, longer and more extensive than what you saw online, as well as a properly-rendered opening crawl, and new and fixed material throughout the film.

It will be ready within the next few days. Those who want it, email tygerbug at yahoo dot com.

JediKev,

"From Star Wars to Jedi" was released 'originally' on DVD-R by Dr Gonzo based on a video capture by BabyHum. I think another release is planned at some point - keep an eye of the torrents thread.

Unless I'm mistaken, any documentaries released by ocp will be 'originals'.

there is some great behind-the-scenes esb/rotj footage in the old 1980 and 1983 specials that myspleen.net released a little while back.

Clapperboard - The Empire Strikes Back Special (a lot of hoth battle stuff)
http://www.myspleen.net/details.php?id=1926

Horizon - How To Film The Impossible (a lot of death star battle stuff)
http://www.myspleen.net/details.php?id=1945

the second one has a lot of things related to masking and overlaying images like starfighters over paintings, starscapes, and eachother.
it also has an explaination for this error:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y7/cypher35/oops.jpg

sorry if you already know this and i am wasting my breath here, i just thought i'd bring these two sources up because they are both excellent quality and would make a good contribution to a behind-the-scenes / deleted scenes dvd like the one you are creating.

I really love this idea, and i don't mind waiting for it if it means you have more time to perfect the final project. I especially like the outtakes and behind the scenes stuff you threw in (like david prowse's original lines before the dubbing). It's like watching an interactive behind the scenes featurette while watching the movie itself. It kindof reminds me of those pop-up features that tvland used to do, where you would be watching an episode of the brady bunch and little text bubbles would pop up pointing out continuity errors, or interesting facts about the production or storyline.

Although there aren't as many deleted scenes from esb and rotj, i think it would be cool to have a similar thing done with them. Just like this one, it could walk through the movie, throwing in deleted scenes, outtakes, and "making of" snippits where applicable and throwing in interesting notes in the subtitles.

I have a few small suggestions if i may... i would really like it if you could manage to include the text at the bottom as a seperate subtitle track. It would probably look a lot smoother on most dvd players and the viewer would then have the option to turn it on or off the second time through. I have a little bit of experiance with dvd menus and subtitle mapping, and i wouldn't mind helping you out in that regard if you need it. I tend to have way too much free time and this sounds like a productive way to spend it for once. it's your project, so it's up to you.

Also, at the risk of sounding too picky, you could probably reduce the line in the deleted magic preview where you talk about "had it not been for one minor character saying 'hold your fire', the entire trilogy would not have taken place" You could probably leave it at that without the long explaination that you offer immediately afterwords. Any one who's seen the movie before would know what you are talking about without a need for an explaination.

I would LOVE to see the Clapperboard and Horizon specials ... I'm on dialup here sadly, I get everything via the old post office ... anyone wanna send 'em at me?

The subtitles are burned into the film because it's not intended to be viewed without them. I usually only include subtitles when I'm showing footage from the familiar version of the film ... without the subtitles you'd just be watching the regular thing. There are no subtitles during the major deleted scenes. Also, regular DVD subtitles are a hassle for me to make for whatever reason (DVD Studio Pro 3's interface is really wonky), and don't look right (pixellated and I can't get the line spacing as thin as I want it), so, ah ... hey look over there!

That said, on the DVD there ARE some subtitles which appear as their own subtitle track. These are extra ones for the Deleted Scenes, which I've added as a nifty special feature. You can judge for yourself how inferior these subtitles are to the burned in ones.

Speaking of which ..

The Deleted Magic DVD is now designed and ready!

I am currently waiting for it all to encode, so I can test the very first burned copy of the DVD.

I'm proud to say that my early description of it as a "bare bones" DVD was completely wrong.

I know that some of you have been waiting a while for this one, and I actually care about getting it right, and I really didn't want to disappoint.

So I did a lot of extra work the last few days, creating so many special features that the disc is completely full and I might have to cut a few of them if it doesn't fit!

It's not a bare bones DVD ... it's a very nice release that does the concept justice.

I can safely say that you guys are going to love this one. I know I do.

Here's the list of features:

"Deleted Magic: The Empire Strikes Back" featurette.

"Deleted Magic: Return of the Jedi" featurette.

"Lapti Nek" extended music video.

Photo Galleries: Extensive photo galleries covering deleted scenes from all the films. Look for your favorite deleted scene there, whether it's Vader choking Jerjerrod or Wampas, Wampas, Wampas.
Star Wars Gallery (approx 200 pics)
Empire Strikes Back Gallery (approx 90 pics)
Return of the Jedi Gallery (over 100 pics)
Phantom Menace Gallery (over 100 pics)
Attack of the Clones Gallery (approx 80 pics)

"Play Deleted Scenes/Film with Extra Notes" ... Extra notes on the major deleted scenes have been added in on a special subtitle track. Turn this on to get more information about some of the scenes.

DVD-ROM features ... In the DVD-ROM directory you'll find the original drafts of Star Wars, and drafts of Empire and Jedi. Also there: The Lost Cut crawl, the AOTC droid ship deleted scene and the rough version of the ROTJ SE ending.

Oop - forgot some replies ...

>>Are you going to torrent the DVD or set it up on something like yousendit for the people who E-Mail you?

Sessler ... I'm on dial-up here, so I'm doing it the old-fashioned way ... mailing out copies. Where it goes from there is none of my concern. Move along, move along ...

Cypher .... So I've got a couple of trade sources for the Horizon and Clapperboard specials now. Sure I'll love 'em.

The problem with ESB and ROTJ is that the major deleted scenes haven't been leaked in any form. It's not like ANH where the Biggs scenes and the Jabba scene and the Chief Bast scene and the Alternate Cantina and all that have been leaked in weird places. There is very little cutscene video for ESB or ROTJ, so it's much more interesting to read about these scenes online, with still photos and all that. A Deleted Magic for ESB and ROTJ would just be a lot of making of stuff and a few short bits ... but I'd still like to do some more stuff on them for a later release.

That said, there are featurettes on Empire and Jedi on the Deleted Magic disc, and they ain't bad. Although I put them together very quickly, saving a lot of stuff for a later release.
