Star Wars DVDs selling fast — Page 3

This is getting a little weak in that you are saying, "Because we don't like the SE changes versus other changes in movies, that should be the deciding factor."

I don't think anyone said that. If you are going to split hairs like I said, you could say that no DVD release is exactly the same as the cinema version because the ratio is differet, or the picture quality is different when it is on film etc. etc. Like I said, if you are talking about minor changes like removing a reflection, I can't imagine anyone is going to mind. It would be a bit silly to release two DVD's, one called "Original version" and aone called "Version with glass reflection removed in one scene" wouldn't it? Comparing that with the changes in Star Wars is like comparing chalk and cheese.

Or apples and oranges?

Not really. A change is a change. People go on in here about the artisans who get forgotton when things are removed, deleted, changed. What about the person or company who made that glass?
Author
Time
But was the glass originally intended to be seen? Do you honestly think the guy was sitting in the auditorium one night, leaned over to his wife and said, "Hey, honey; that's my glass!"

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

No, I do not. But is the standard then going to be what the director and creator of the object like or dislike about the object going to be the basis for inclusion and exclusion? Because if it is, then the Wolfman should have been permantly deleted, the guy who put it in there hated the mask as much as GL did.

No, I don't think that should be the standard. What I think should be the standard is, "How close is this to the theatrical experience?" The reflection likely wasn't visible in release prints because of the lowered resolution values, much like matte lines and other such problems. If the corrections are for that purpose, then it preserves the original. If not, it has been altered for video release.

This is my point: If the SE's had only included one or two very minor changes, such as a lightsaber being touched up or editing out a reflection of a camera or something, I would not be here protesting, I would buy the set as it was. I'm not pedantic or anal retentive, I'm not going to kick up a stink about such minor changes, and personally I have never said that the OT's shouls be on DVD for "historical purposes" or for archives; I want them so I can see the movies as I think they should be, and not as GL has decided they should be now. I know other people present different arguements but mine has always been that. We are not talking about minor changes when it comes to th SE's, we are talking about going back after the films have been released and changing them drastically, changing peoples lines, changing scenes, and yes, changing the story. I acknowledge that some people deny that the story has been changed, but when you add characters, add scenes from places not previously seen and changes peoples lines, that changes the story. Sure, some of the eye candy is cool, but as I have pointed out before, I have seen cool eye candy in PC games aswell; that doesn't mean I want them spliced into a movie. They just don't belong in SW IMO: But again, as I have said all along, if people want to buy th SE's then they should have that choice, and I should be able to have mine. Fair enough?

One more, DJR. Would you consider the DVD edition of Ghostbusters to be an SE, since the effects people went back and finished the effects for the finale? No CG, no real "added" effects; just the completion of a scene that didn't happen in the original release because Columbia was locked into a release date.

I would in the strict, playing Devil's Advocate sense, yes, but knowing how video releases and such go, no. When I made my arugments, I was playing Devil's Advocate for jimbo's point, albeit a small point.

I think it was one of the Fast and the Furious releases.

Yep, you'd be correct. I guess Uni didn't want to call it an Ultimate Edition.

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

Why use the same nomenclature that everyone else does when you have a movie that can get away with being called "Tricked Out Edition"? Anything to toot your own horn, I suppose.

I bought the first edition because I enjoyed the mind numbing speed of it all. Not the best flick, but good with a tub of popcorn. The thing is that I've only watched the DVD once. Haven't seen it in a while and haven't missed it either.

I can't believe this conversation went from Star Wars DVDs to Fast and Furious DVDs.

Talk about from good to bad. No wait, this about the Special Edition Star Wars, I meant from bad to worst...
The original Star Wars trilogy: Our cultural history deserves to be preserved and should be available to the public like all great works of art!
