Star Wars Custom Blu Ray Saga Set (a WIP) — Page 5

Well if you’re taking cues from blade runner, it wouldn’t be that odd to label them with years.

For those that havent seen the set, the discs were labeled similarly to this:

1982 Theatrical Version
1982 International Version
1991 Workprint Edition
1992 Director’s Cut
2007 Final Cut

How about this:

1977 Theatrical Edition
1981 Theatrical Re-release
1997 Special Edition
2004 DVD Version
2011 Blu-ray Version

If you don’t like DVD and Blu-ray, you could say something like “Home Video” or you could mention Lowry in the name like “2004 Lowry Transfer/Lowry Remaster”.

I’m gonna be pretty stubborn on the names thing though haha sorry I just can’t bring myself to put just the year to differentiate them all.

Hey, as long as you don’t mind there being a Finaler Edition and Finalerer Edition someday.

I like all of these ideas more than Redux/Final/Saga.

Jeez, didn’t know the names were gonna be the thing about this project to cause so much backlash haha

For 04 I’m gonna change it to “Special Edition Re-release (2004)”
A little less corny and fan-ish, which seems to be the main complaint, and creates a nice symmetry with Disc One where we have “Theatrical Edition (1977)” and then “Theatrical Re-release (1981)”

Still having a little debate in my head about 2011.

(Just to clear things up, I am labelling them with years, all I meant was that I wanted something creative in addition to the years to differentiate each version.)

Gotta get away from the names for a while haha, time to get back to the discs. I’ve re-started the CC of SW-1977 now that I’m settled into my new computer system and have begun piecing together the bonus features for Disc Four. I was hoping to have at least some version of ANH out before TFA, but now seeing that’s probably not going to happen. Sorry guys, but I’m sure the end product will be worth the wait. I’ve got an empty spot on my movie shelf that’s begging me to finish, but I just want to take my time and get all the details right.

Take all the time you need man, make sure you’re happy with the final product, that’s what matters.

Been a while without an update. Sorry guys. I actually just updated to Adobe cc so I’m actually starting the color correction all over again with the new software (I wasn’t that far along anyways and wasn’t entirely happy with what I had so no biggie) but thankfully all the work I’ve done on the discs themselves in Encore can just be transfered over as is since it’s still on Cs6.

Once I get past ANH, ESB and ROTJ will be much quicker and easier since I’ll already basically have a template and there aren’t really any color issues I have with those so it’ll pretty much be drag and drop.

More updates to come soon. Thank you all for your patience and help 😃 I’m really happy with the direction this project is going.

This actually looks pretty slick so far!

Hi

I’m very new to the site so apologies if my suggestions for possible extras is wrong, but thought of the following:

Adding the two ewok adventures to ROTJ as extras.

Also there has been a recent doc on the bbc iplayer “Star wars at the bbc” which has some interesting segments related to the promotion of the original films including an interview where due to a strike the show was disrupted by loud music being played outside the studio.

Good luck with your project.

Regards
Jay

Both Ewok Adventures have been added to the list. Thank you for the suggestion! I had mostly forgotten about these gems haha.

What would you do once you have this Ultimate Collection finished? Would you distribute it in some way, shape, or form?

Presumably he’d share them via a torrent that would include all of his art, ready to be printed. You’d then have to burn the discs yourself, as well as print out the Blu-Ray slip covers (and disc labels, if he makes them).

On that note, are you planning to make disc art?

Right on the money sir.

Also, yes I will be creating disc art but it will likely be very simplistic.

Are you the first person on this board to compile all the special features (including the blu-ray set bonus disc) onto bonus discs? I haven’t seen any other projects that tackled this, aside from someone who included some bonus stuff as rom-only content. Maybe I’ve missed it.
Thanks! Looking forward to your project!

The more simplistic the better, I say. Also, will these Blu-Ray covers be for standard size Blu-Ray cases (the blue ones) or will they be for Criterion cases (the clear ones)? Also note that if they’re for the blue ones, they’ll need to be slightly bigger for the thicker 3-disc cases (just a heads up in case you hadn’t considered that).

Thanks for all the awesome work you’re doing here. It looks to be an awesome set.

They will be standard blu Ray cases.
When the time comes, I’ll order my case, size the cover accordingly, and then provide a link to the exact case I used in case anybody wants to know.

Speaking of the Blu Ray covers, I’ve done a bit of work on ANH. The first is the same as the last one posted, just with updated version names, but I also created a variant version with classic poster art.

@Darth Lucas - The artwork looks fabulous! I was wondering if you’d be including audio specs for each of the respective discs.

I won’t be including specs on the covers themselves, but I may create an insert for the case with chapters and technical specs.

I would prefer this, in case for whatever reason someone just wanted to use the covers themselves. Have you decided what your source of EBB and RoTJ 97 will be?

I haven’t given it too much thought as my focus is really on ANH right now. But for Empire, unless Harmy comes out with a Re-Specialized before I get to it, I’ll either use Adywan’s recreation or create my own recreation by stitching together Despecialized and the Blu-Ray. As for ROTJ, I’m really not sure what my options are tbh since I haven’t really seen any 97 ROTJ preservations aside from a couple laserdisc captures here and there. I will probably have to create my own for that one if I want any kind of high quality, again stitching together despecialized and Blu. But again, that’s only if Harmy hasn’t done a respecialized by that time.

But if I’m not mistaken, the only notable change (aside color and audio) between 97 and 04 for Jedi is Hayden’s ghost am I correct, or am I overlooking something?

And Sebastian Shaw’s eyebrows. Also the 2004 version added Naboo to the CGI celebration scenes, and added the Senate dome and the Jedi temple to '97 shots of Coruscant.

And eyebrows, and other probably things.

If you’re going to make your own RoTJ97, the hardest part will definitely be rotoscoping the celebration shot to remove Naboo and remove the Jedi Temple. I really don’t think the available 97 sources are good enough to just drop in. I think the rest can be taken from Harmy’s 2.0 and 2004. The 97 DTS audio is on myspleen, synced to a sample video encode of the 97SE.

Also, the 2004/2011 RoTJ will need extensive color correction.

For ESB, I think Adywan’s would work pretty well. Harmy says there are some things he forgot to remove from the 2004, but I haven’t seen a list of what’s wrong. I personally like the color of Adywan’s 97, whether or not it’s terribly accurate.
