The Marvel stuff can't be just categorized all one way. The material varied immensely over the years. Some was more intelligent and some was dumber, but I certainly don't see that newspaper strip was any better in that area. The Marvel stuff was certainly more in tune with the spirit of Star Wars than the 90s eu and Dark Horse stuff. That Marvel didn't fit in with story that Lucas would reveal later doesn't bother me, because I don't have much respect for the story Lucas revealed later. I think it's only reasonable that they include the Marvel stuff in their canon, considering they've included so much modern shit and the Marvels are truer to the Spirit of Star Wars.

True at least their was no Jar Jar and Hayden Anakin/Vader yet.

Now they were even in the comics and they tried to keep Anakins likeness in the comics as close to hayden as possible.  Also whiny emo douche in the comics too, in between being a leader of the clone troops and jedi.

The Marvel stuff was conceived before darth vader was Luke's Father, and Leia was Luke's sister.  Luke had a jedi father who was killed by Darth Vader and Leia was a possible love interest because she was not his sister.

The first authorized official non canon EU sequels to star wars happened in marvel even before the splinter of the minds eye novel was published.  Of course star wars 77 would be changed in empire strikes back and return of the jedi.  The father and sister thing irritates those who see only star wars as canon. They hate the sequels and pretend they never happened the same as prequel haters and special edition haters.

The comic strips haven't been reprinted lately, have they? When I was a kid I got "Classic Star Wars #4" and always wanted to read the rest of the story. Looks like they havent been reprinted since the mid-90s.

I was quite a fan of the Marvel's but even then I realised some of it was bobbins...giant comedy rabbits, that could never happen in a Star Wars film......er.

I was very fond of Valance The Hunter, even if he did resemble this guy :

Driven Cyborg Hunter Travis

and shared a fate similar to a much later cyborg :

Valiant sacrifice

Only just discovered this online stash of all the cool Russ Manning Sunday strips. I still think this stuff was closest to the spirit and fun of the original movie. http://dailysw.blogspot.com/search/label/The%20Constancia%20Affair

Those were chopped up and reprinted as comic book panels in star wars the early adventures and like the al williamson reprints the sundays were recolored and the old colors were lost.  I think they only got black and white photostats or in the case of williamson they shot it off his original artwork.

Russ Manning's best was Magnus Robot fighter.

I liked his star wars but the best artwork and stories were apparently ghostwritten and drawn by others while he was ill. Like the Boba Fett story.

One of the stories was published under a fake name and never reprinted.

Some of the newspaper strips were done by Alfredo Alcala like the adaptation of Han Solo at stars end.

The only SW Comics I have ever enjoyed were the infinites series and Star Wars Tales. Other than that I was rather bored with the others I went through, but then again I'm not really a comic guy.
