Does anyone want to trade for version 6 of this, or would someone be kind enough to seed this at myspleen?
I don't have access to the alt.binares and I would love to see this.

Mm, well, I actually kind of like the way the 2004 DVD looks, though it's a lot lot lot different from any version before. I like the contrastiness and the bizarre bright popping colors, it just looks interesting. I had to brighten it up as the real version is too dark, but it was definitely a conscious choice to use that version.

If you want a version that looks exactly like the old laserdiscs but has DVD quality, you should do the same thing but using the 1997 Special Editions as your main picture source - they're available in digital quality on several discs. At that point the picture hadn't been screwed with and still looked like the old laserdiscs.

I enjoyed Deleted Magic a lot and Darth Editous' edit was great, so now I'd really like to get your release...
Will it hit a.b.sw or myspleen anytime soon?

And I'm a newbie so I don't really know what I'm talking about, but I usually upload at 100kB/s+ to myspleen, so I can definitely help seed, and maybe even upload the files if needed...

No one has torrented this. I think it was on a.b.starwars once. I generally send out copies by mail.

I actually got a copy of the movie a few months back, but never got a chance to comment. I'd like to say good job ocpmovie, because this is a quality dvd. Unless I knew where to look, most of the time I doubt I would know what is/isn't LD as opposed to DVD footage, because it is blended very well.

My only gripe about your DVD...It's too bright. I guess it's a matter of personal taste, but I found that when I compared the official DVD to yours the black level was a little high. In certain spots it makes the star fields look washsed out, but very slightly. Furthermore, the few times that I did notice discrepancies between LD footage and DVD footage it was because of the brightness. It seems as if the LD stuff was a little too bright, and I think darkening it up would hide any flaws, albeit minor flaws.; especally where you have any LD footage that takes place in space.

I don't mean to pick anything apart, just a minor observation.

Hi there BH!

The laserdisc footage was darkened a bit, but not super heavily. It was very hard to match the oversaturated colors and darkness of the official DVDs, the 2004 was a very odd print created through digital messing-with-ness.

The entire 2004 print was brightened up for my release, and when you create DVDs, well, black levels are the bane of a DVD creator's existence. When you encode something, certain programs (FCP) loooove to suddenly raise your black levels an incredible amount. To create Classic Edition I actually had to bring the black levels DOWN so the encoder could bring them up again. Perfect black was hard to create without losing picture information. Looked fine on my TV but then my TV does crush blacks down a bit.

I find a lot of newer TVs bring black levels WAY up, tune 'em down folks. =) Do adjust your set?

Oddly, I haven't had this problem with ESB Classic, the black levels seem fine without tweaking, not sure why. I'm sure now somebody's gonna come in and say the black levels on ESB Classic are awful. =) But certainly black levels are the hardest thing, and many DVD players (like my current one) have options to change the black level during playback which just makes things more confusing!

Glad you liked the edit - all the best. Enjoy Empire Classic too if it comes round your way.

Keep circulating the discs people.

Some have asked what the text on the back of the covers ought to be. Well, here goes - my blurb for the film I guess.

The original version of Star Wars. Not the way it was, but the way you remember it.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, George Lucas released a film which changed the face of science fiction filmmaking forever.

Journey back to 1977 with this faithful reproduction of the original version of Star Wars.

"It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy...."

Using video from official DVD and laserdisc sources, the 1977 theatrical version of the film has been reproduced in high quality. CGI Special Edition elements have been eliminated, and the original opening crawl recreated. A new soundtrack has been created for this disc, based on the 1993 Definitive Collection laserdisc, reinstating lines from the original 1977 theatrical monomix.

Relive the magic with the film that started it all, the way you remember it. From the editor that brought you Deleted Magic.

Joshua Klein, DVD columnist for the Chicago Tribune, interviewed me today. He's not a huge fan of Deleted Magic but enjoyed the Star Wars Classic Edition disc a lot, and we talked at length about Originaltrilogy.com and the ways fans are finding to preserve these classic movies and give them the respect they deserve. We talked about a lot of things so I have no idea what he's going to use.

He'll be doing an article about Classic Edition and the O-OT in ... tuesday's paper I think?

Have a look for it.

I am SO going to get sued by Lucasfilm.
