Cute video. Obviously put together by a Star Wars lover. Thanks for reminding me. I knew the video was coming but forgot to check.

Is anyone able to save the video to their hard disc?

Good man! I'll do the same, though I have no way of getting it off my sky+ box!

UPDATE: I just watched on the lunch time show. Quite a cute story. It reminded me of an episode of "Unsung Heroes".

I don't think there were any clips in there that I don't already though.

Cheers

Just got a VERY interesting email:

"Dear Jambe,

I have only had time to take a short look at your work, but my initial impression is that your project is something I would be prepared to contribute to. When I am able to watch more, I will confirm one way or another. In the meantime, what would you be interested in hearing from me, and how would you conduct the interview?

Nice work reconstructing the original Jabba scene from the various fragments.

Regards,

David West Reynolds"

As you all probably know, this guy has seen some of the "lost cut". He also appeared in one of the great BBC docos from around the SE era.

If you have any questions to ask him, please let me know soon.

Cheers

Interesting indeed.

I've got my thinking cap on....

Right now, I'm mostly interested in the unscripted on-set gags.

That's awesome news. You keep getting more and more classic SW crammed into this project.

I would want to know how he thought the flavor of the Lost Cut was vs. what was released. Obviously, we have heard Lucas' spin on it, but I would love to hear from someone that isn't Lucas. What were his first impressions? Did it seem groundbreaking at the time? What stood out as fresh and different? What was bad and needed improving? Are there any particular cut scenes that he wished had stayed in? What does he remember most about the viewing? What does he think about what a cultural phenomenon SW has become?

Stuff like that would be interesting to me.

This was from my old Star Wars website:

The First Rough Cut (7/1976)

As the film was being completed in '76, George Lucas and Gary Kurtz hired John Jympson to edit the film. Jympson assembled a rough cut of the film from all the footage available. Called "The Star Wars", this footage was a 35mm black and white print made from the original color negatives. This print was assembled together to follow the shooting script (the revised 4th draft) to show how the film was progressing.

The original rough cut took up 13 reels of film and contained 30 to 40 percent different footage from the Academy Award winning final edit. It contained different angles of shots, additional scenes, and longer sequences. The rough cut didn't have any of the footage of the rebels aboard the blockade runner, as this footage was still being filmed. Special effects were not part of the film either, so the laserblasts weren't there and the lightsabers didn't glow. The exterior space shots were also absent as ILM was just beginning to produce their models and filming techniques. This rough cut was also a silent film. This version was recently explored by Dr. David West Reynolds for the Star Wars Insider (issue #41). Most of the information and many of the pictures used on this site come from there.

I think I would like to know what he thought of the scenes that were later replaced by pick-up shooting. What did the film look like before: 1/12/77 With additional funding secured from FOX, a week of additional photography and re-shoot footage begins at Death Valley, California. First off is new landspeeder footage (without Mark Hamill on the first few days, who is recovering from car crash injuries. Though he is released from hospital a few days later, the scenes he later shoots at Death Valley are unusable due to his facial injuries being so prominent). Also filmed are sequences with a Bantha, played by Mardji the Elephant, and filmed in Desolation Canyon.

The area named Dante’s View was used for the reshoot view of Mos Eisley spaceport, whilst the scene of Artoo wandering through the rocky hills of the Dune Sea area (and the previous moment where he and Threepio go their separate ways) were filmed at Stovepipe Wells Village, whilst his newly shot capture by the Jawas was taken at Artoo’s Arroyo

Exciting times. I'd say some good questions to ask would be:

-Whether or not the supposed "American Graffiti"-like atmosphere present in the lost cut contributed to or hindered the film?
-Did he feel that the pacing of the film worked in its early form?
-If he thought the excised material drastically changed the film in any way? Did it make it more slapstick? More focused on certain characters?
-Since he mentioned in "Revolution Of Star Wars" that geography played a larger part in the film, does he think the grander scale of the sets would have been useful in the final cut?
-His perspective on how audiences would react today if this were the first Star Wars film released?
-Whether or not the missed grapplng hook scene exists (I had to say it)?
-If he can describe the unique material in the rough cut pertaining to the Death Star/Leia rescue scenes or Mos Eisley?

Just throwing out a couple of suggestions. This stuff interests me quite a bit.

The first Prgm. that I took in at C4 (LA) last May was Dr. D. W. Reynolds & Lorne Peterson - 'The Archeology of 'SW'

w/ a Ph.D in Archeology his wealth of information as pertaining to 'SW' could also stretch into areas outside of his viewing 'The Lost Cut' as he has written articles for the Star Wars Insider

- He ventured to Africa (Tunisia) in '95 and submitted a piece entitled 'Return to Tatooine' (Iss. # 27)

- Iss # 48 featured David again scouting out all of the 'SW' shooting locations one can find within the U.S w/ his article 'Star Wars RoadTrip'
'And you call yourselves human'

- Leia to Tarkin

Hello. Can i just start by saying- David West Reynolds? That`s totally cool. Just to confirm the- documentary he was in was A Long Time Ago, the omnibus special shown to mark the release of Phantom. He can be seen walking around the Trogladite pits and telling of his Star Wars archeological expeditions. Now ,I actually have the article that he wrote on the Lost Cut for the British Official Star Wars mag and am currently in the process of scanning it in. It has a remarkably in depth description of the Lost Cut, with many photos taken from the dailies, and i was wondering if you would like me to send you a copy?

I have the SW Insider US edition that the article was in, but you never know, the UK one might have bigger stills. So, I would love a copy if that's ok.

Thanks

I am on the scrounge! Could somebody send me the Biggs/Luke scene from the Rebel hanger? I don't have the 97 SEs in my growing library. And I haven't got access to my 2004 dvds at the moment.

Thanks

Jambe, what do you think your most prized find in all of the three SW docs you are doing?

and what was the closest you got to to the ROTJ deleted scene where Luke makes a new lightsaber?

PS: You know of that photo, where you just see two legs and in between you see a person with a gun, is that an actual filmed scene or just concept art? And if it was a filmed scene, what did it contain?

Thanks, really appreciate it!!!

1. The Jabba scene, closely followed by the expanding L/S.
2. I didn't get that close to finding the lightsaber scene - I think it's in the vaults at LFL . I did manage to confirm some of the info that was out there about it though.
3. What photo?

Thanks Adywan!!!!

This scene:

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/6096/cutmos3vb6.jpg

Hope you dont mind another question, but where is this come from:

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/2535/star20destroyer20attackfc7.jpg

Interesting stuff:

"A whole chunk of major deletions mark the beginning of the film as seen on Tatooine, immediately after the scene of Vader's arrival on the Death Star. In an early deleted sequence, Darth Vader was to contact Luke through the Force on Tatooine. This led into a deleted dream sequence involving Luke.

In another shot, deleted from the beginning of the film, we see the landing area for the Falcon and Luke's X-Wing in the Tatooine desert. In a nearby cave, (not Ben's hut like in the ROTJ novel) Luke finishes his new lightsaber and places it inside R2-D2 along with the message for Jabba.

This scene was partially completed but never finished. It contained no dialogue, but the music that was to accompany this sequence was written and appears on the ROTJ SE soundtrack."

Q: A cut scene that people often refer too is the opening scene in ROTJ where Luke constructs a new lightsaber and hides it in R2. Was this scene actually filmed and what do you remember about it?

A: Oh yes, we nearly filmed that. I helped write that scene. We were going to film it right at the very end. The first scene we did was an exterior shot as though you were in a cave looking out, so in the studio you'd have the outside with me as it were standing guard. Scary thought. Whilst on the inside Luke Skywalker was making a new lightsaber. So we actually shot the exterior of that, and then in the end there was no time. It was like "You get a lightsaber anyway" So we left it at that.

That's a shot used in the Holiday Special and as far as I know, was shot during principal photography for Star Wars - the set seems to suggest so, though I guess it could have been constructed for the HS. Somebody else here might be able to tell us more. But hey, there is only one person who really knows!

Just to point out, I am happy to answer any questions you have but I am not the fountain of knowledge that I may have appeared to be. I simply research lots when doing these projects and I forget most of the info afterwards.

Best regards

It was cut from Star Wars. The photo was a daily from the original negative and it appeared in Dr. Reynolds lost cut article. The small gentleman, nick-named "Little Flash Gordon" by the costume and make-up department, appears to be running from stormtroopers as part of the panicked crowd that the troopers march bu on their way to docking bay 94. This scene in question was an unscripted gag that they filmed and edited out. And somehow this clip ended up in the Holiday Special. It makes sense that the HS ended up using this clip as well as the one with Darth Vader and Chief Bast from the Death Star. They get to use authentic Star Wars footage that wasn't already seen in the film and they didn't have to shoot any new footage. Cheap and easy.
