Star Wars: A New Hope (Completed)

This edit has been attempted before, and there is even one in the works call Renascent. Well, I’m very interested in the idea of blending the prequels and classic trilogy into one; so I want to try my hand at it.

I can tell you up front that my edit will be a lengthy version. A little over 3 hours for A New Hope. My goal is to give it an even more epic treatment. In a day where some have no problem sitting and watching The Lord of the Rings for 3 hours. (4 if you prefer the extended cut) I see it being no problem for a Star Wars film being that long.

I have my ideas laid out for the first installment, and vague ideas for Empire, and Return of the Jedi. If you have any questions; this is the place.

I’ll keep everyone posted.

It will be Ep. 4 and AOTC

And then Empire, and Revenge, with a few elements from AOTC that I'll be eliminating for the Ep. 4 edit.

Then, ROTJ, ROTS, and elements from TPM.

I have it all pretty well mapped out.

I'm also color grading all prequel material to give them a somewhat aged look. I always felt like the prequels felt more advanced; so I wanted there to be a distinction.

Thanksgiving is over; I don't have to be at work today; so I get to work on the edit today.

I'll try and post some screen shots of my color graded shots.

Sounds most excellent

Sounds like a great project. Looking forward to it all. ;-)

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

I've been a bit slow with those screen shots... I'll try and get them up this weekend... Good news though, I actually finished my first draft... I was off for a full four days during the Thanksgiving holiday, so I had a lot of time to work.

I have a technical question. Does anyone know how to get 3 hours of video on a DL DVD without losing quality?

See if you can make it so you can watch them back to back. That's what I'm doing, you might like that idea.

Thanks for the advice Ady, Asteroid, I'm gonna look into this software.

Ady -

Is it simple software to use? Or is there a few things you have to do to get the quality you were talking about?

I made a mpeg2 throgh After Effects (Don't have procoder yet), and i tried to author the DVD with DVD Architect... Is this a bad program to use? It says the file is too big to fit on a DL DVD.

So, I wound up rendering to mpeg2 in AE, and then I authored with xtodvd. I got GREAT results that way. However, after viewing the movie last night, I want to tighten up a few things. So, it's not the final draft.

I'm not to keen on after Effects mpeg rendering. Its always best to convert your source to a lossless avi codec (like lagaryth) to do any editing and then export using the same codec. this way you don't lose any quality between renders. The use an external MPEG encoder to do the final render. I used DVD Architect to do my Revisited DVDs. It sounds like you have the bitrate too high when exporting

Well, since what I did will not be the final cut, i'll try what you mentioned. Thanks Ady. By the way, I plan on sending you that article next week. Really sorry it's taking me forever.

Going through my 2nd phase of editing. My main hiccup is the one infodroid warned me about. I'm using the music that is already on the films, because I can't deal with even the minor bleed through of the old music.

The problem with the first edit, is the music was blending very well between films. However, I think I may have finally found a remedy for that problem during this edit.

Hope to have this done pretty soon.

I've finished editing, and I'm still looking for the best output solution for the film. I've actually cut it down a bit below 3 hours, so that's been helpful.

I wanted to use alternate music cuts, but I could never learn how to separate the audio to play around with.

If ANYONE would like to sit me down and show me how to do this step by step, I would greatly appreciate it. It may inspire me to go over this one more time just for sake of the music.

As far as I'm concerned; this edit is in the can. I'll let everyone know when this is available to download. I hope to make this available through torrents... However, I've never done this? Can someone explain how this is done in a PM?
