Star Wars: A New Hope [SET ruLes 1.0] - AVCHD & BD RELEASED! — Page 3

I have checked the PAL UK SE laserdisc and the pitch is higher than the NTSC soundtrack by a semitone, which is probably about right for PAL speed-up. Slow it down, and job done ;)

Interesting project. I've always wondered how a "good" laserdisc transfer would really look with some work, and this appears to be exactly that :)
One of the things I've always hated with MPEG2 direct transfers is color shift. Especially during Tatooine scenes. There are some cases where the color shifting in some versions is just out of hand - pink, to green, to red, to the tan/gold-like color of what it should be. I guess some MPEG encoders just can't handle some colors very well.

Anyway, I'll check some of the other clips later - sendspace is going sloooow for me right now ;)

Curious to see how this turns out!

MPEG has some defects, but for sure the fact that Tatooine scenes color are messed up is not MPEG's fault... infact, the colors are almost the same on laserdisc... someone wrote about the fact is involved with the telecine conversion.

I just finished to process the video part - medianed, color corrected, sharpened, denoised, upscaled - now it's just a matter of converting the video to AVC or MPEG2.

I'll post some new clips soon; I will use YouTube too this time.

As promised, here you are five test clips; they are 50/50 comparison clips, on the left unprocessed, on the right sharpened, denoised, color corrected; no audio; compressed with AVC @1400kbps to retain enough quality but small size:

SENDSPACE DIRECTORY

Sorry, no Youtube as it blocked them almost immediately after upload. But this time the clips are "light" (from about 10MB each) so everyone could download them.

Feedbacks wanted, as it's time to stop the video conversion and go on to the

AUDIO PART

We (me and another forum member who decided to help me) are working out to include both DTS theatrical soundtrack and laserdisc AC3 soundtrack; it's not easy as I thought before! Hope to find the right solution soon; stay tuned for updates.

I can't see past the compression artifacts.

you are right, the compression is high, but these clips were here just to show the color correction to someone who have problem to download heavy clips... usually I tend to stay around 7000/8000kbps with AVC compression.

COLOR CORRECTION UPDATE:

I tested thoroughly the color correction settings I described in this thread, and, despite the fact that "whites were whiter than white", I was not totally happy with them, because that little part of autowhite I used in my avisynth script resulted in several color artifacts... so, I decided to restart from the very beginning!

After a LOT of hours spent comparing the original SE laserdisc captures, GKAR, color corrected laserdisc captures and OUT, I understood that, if I want a perfect 1997 SE color correction - with colors as similar as possible to the original trilogy - I must color correct the whole movie scene by scene (sometimes frame by frame) with different, tailored for the scene/frame settings...

Because to obtain a color corrected scene I must work for several hours, I calculated that if I want (and don't count I could not be sure to be able to do it) color correct the 1997 SE near the perfection, I will release my SET in some years... that is because I have a family, a job, a life outside this project - you know, my cats want to be cuddled, feeded and adulated several times each day (><,) - and luckily in the last weeks my family decided to let me alone on the front of the screen during my "project days"... so, with so little free time to improve the SET colors, and the fact that I'd like to release it ASAP, a decision must be taken...

Following my new restoration philosophy, "less is more", I decided to do subtle but more correct color corrections... yes, with the old (and with inbetween) script, the whites were whiter, but the rest of the picture often was greener too... and the colors were too "different" from the original, sometimes looked artifacted, other times like "painted"...

At the end, I achieved a good result using two settings, one for the whole movie apart the Mos Eisley scenes, where I used the other, a bit more "aggressive" for that very pinkish scenes... it's true that some pinkish tones are still visible in white parts of few scenes, but the results, compared to GKAR for example, are quite good - IMHO, of course...

As usual, GKAR is not resized or processed; SET is taken from the finished file, and then resized to match GKAR.

AUDIO UPDATE:

CapableMetal, with all his effort, was really helpful with audio soundtracks: he sync'd the DTS theatrical soundtrack to SET, and sync'd the NTSC AC3 soundtrack too. I tested them both, and the sync is perfect! Thanks a lot, CapableMetal!

As AVCHD format does not allow DTS, I will include only the NTSC AC3 original soundtrack, plus the english and german soundtracks from the PAL laserdiscs and the italian soundtrack from VHS (still to capture it); could still release an MKV with DTS soundtrack, for those who doesn't care to play an AVCHD on their BD player or PS3.

Following these, I will release a BD-25 with both OUT and SET - this time with the DTS soundtrack; maybe an interview to GL for the SE and some trailers will be appreciated... I also thought to add a bonus version, as a four quarters split screen... top left GOUT, top right OUT, bottom left GKAR, bottom right SET - what do you think?

Any comment - as always - is highly appreciated! Thanks to your comments, I learned a lot of things!

I still don't understand why they did not just use a 1997 IP for the blu ray it would have had all the color information intact and they would not have had to do a new timing by going back to the OCN.

They also could have used the 1997 audio mix which was better.

A DVD version of set rules would be welcome DVD5 or DVD9 as i don't have a blu ray burner and the MKV would not work in MY PS3 or Xbox 360.

Just a request not a demand.

Video, coded with AVC, is ready for AVCHD and BD; about DVD, I must code the video with MPEG2; as I have to finish the AVCHD version before, it will be done in a second time - I WILL release it, only still don't know when...

Audio in english DTS, AC3 (from NTSC laserdisc AC3 soundtrack and from PAL laserdisc PCM soundtrack) and german AC3 is ready; I'm going to capture the italian soundtrack in the next days.

Subtitles are not ready at all... I must work on them.

I plan to release the .m2ts file really soon, because the video - the hard part - is done. Stay tuned!

 (Edited)

I finished to capture the italian VHS videotape; tomorrow I hope to sync its soundtrack to the SET video. and I synchronized it to the video.

About subtitles: italian and english subs are almost ready; marvins is working hard to make the OUT literal french subtitles, and promised to make also the SET added dialogs; literal german and spanish ones are still not made.

So, if nobody will answer soon, I think I will release next week a SET 1.0 with english, french and italian literal full and forced subtitles, and german forced ones - that I've done reading the german burnt-in subtitles on the laserdisc - while full german and full and forced spanish ones will be the "usual" subtitles...

Meanwhile, I've done a GKAR Vs SET split screen comparison...

Happy to know that someone is interested in this project... as nobody has posted any comment, I don't know if I 've done a decent job, or at the contrary a bad job...

Hope someone (who actually has downloaded and watched it) will post some feedback about this project, or about the OUT [ruLes] project, so I could know if I must continue with them, and release EP V and EP VI, or definitely stop here...

Downloading both the AVCHD and the Blu now. Will comment as soon as I have checked them out.

I'm definitely interested in you doing the rest of them as well (but don't forget Jurassic Park!:-)

I just finished watching it and all I can say is: I was blown away. I also own the 2008 DVD (you know, the one with GOUT) of only ANH, the 2004 DVD of only ESB and all the movies on BD, so now I've watched (almost) every Special Edition of Star Wars if you continue with your awesome preservations.
