Do you guys think I should mix in Special Edition footage, or keep it purist?

What footage did you have in mind?

Alderaan explosion, some of the Battle of Yavin (but not a lot of it), the Sandcrawler, the Millennium Falcon taking off, Vader’s lightsaber correction, the Millennium Falcon being tracked by that dude, the new Yavin Base shot, and one of the new Cloud City shots are all shots I just prefer.

It’s really a question of whether I should completely faithfully stick to the intent of the fanedit or if I should fix some nitpicks I have with the OT.

I guess I could have two versions, a purist version and a nitpicky version.

Also, how long is too long? At what point is it short enough to release?

Do the cloud city changes but for color correction use harmys version for the battle of Yavin use the special edition definitely use the falcon blasting off of Mos Eisley special edition but beside that I can’t think of any good changes

Those are all ‘good’ SE changes to me, so I don’t think you’d need two versions.

As for how long it should run, I’d say let your bladder be your guide - anything running over 2.5 hours is pushing it.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Yeah but what if he’s old like me? 30 minutes isn’t much of a movie.

Okay so he’ll need to release 3 versions.

So, shockingly, I am still working on this. I just have no idea on how to cut things, which is why it’s still not done after four months.

I think I’m gonna put this on the backburner, though, for a few weeks. I’m gonna sit down with my friends and just watch the thing, see if it’s any good, and note what I can cut out. They’re probably not gonna want to do that until before the Last Jedi, so… yeah.

As of now, it’s slightly under four hours long. Maybe this is just desperation, but could this be just kind of some long movie you plan ahead to watch, kind of a marathon movie?

It fades to black between Chapters 2 and 3, you could use that as an intermission.

I feel pretty terrible for how long this has dragged out.

I guess I’m ready to look for voice actors for a narrator, if anyone with a nice, sexy voice is interested, PM me. The movie’s still close to 4 hours long, but it doesn’t look like it’s gonna get any shorter. But I’m still hoping.

This project’s essentially been dead for 2 years now but especially since Act on Instinct offered to do voice acting, I’ve been thinking about bringing it back.

As I’ve said before on this thread, though, the 3-in-1 movie isn’t something I think really worked. It ended up 4ish hours long, and I wasn’t satisfied with that. I thought NeverarGreat’s advice was good and I couldn’t really achieve that runtime.

I also felt unsatisfied that the movie would spend such a large time in Chapter 3 undoing what Chapter 2 did, which if you went and saw a movie that did that, you’d think it was sloppy writing. It works when Empire and Jedi are separate movies, but if it were one movie then it should have been written out in another draft. If I could somehow make it that Han died at the end of Chapter 2, maybe it could work?

However, the idea of there being only one Death Star was originally incidental to the edit, but it became my favorite aspect of it, so I thought about trying to make it work as like a 6-part miniseries. Six Episodes, two per movie. I ended up scrapping this too because I felt like the episode lengths were too all over the place, however after the longest Mandalorian Episode was 16 minutes longer than the shortest, it got me thinking that this could work.

Now, the difference between the longest and shortest episodes I had was over half an hour, but I could easily add more runtime to the shorter one and I’m sure I could cut 5 to 10 minutes out of the longer one, to get the difference down to 20ish minutes.

Anyway, the point of me saying all this was to gauge how people feel about this project. There was a little bit of interest in this back when I first posted this, would you guys still be interested in this without the 3-in-1 aspect or was the interest only in a 3-in-1 fanedit of the Original Trilogy?

Edit:

Another I could think of is editing it into two movies instead of one, which could work, but I’m not so sure of. I’d still want this fanedit to be of a more different format, though, because I’d rather not have it just be an alteration of each of the OT movies. I wouldn’t be able to justify the hard drive space to download that, in my opinion.

I’m surprised no one has responded to this.

I’ve only just found this thread and think the whole idea is fascinating

I’d love to see it, either in its original 4 hour version, or the new formats you’re discussing.

Maybe it’s because I’m old, or just a rabid fan, but FWIW I’d happily watch a four hour Star Wars film.

Completely agree with this. I’m interested in this no matter what.

Although a 3-in-1 edit would have been neat, it’s probably unfeasible as you say. But a 2-in-1 ESB and ROTJ could be really good, and I had actually been thinking along those lines for a theoretical fanedit.

Open with Palpatine’s arrival at the partially destroyed Death Star. He senses Vader wants to continue his search for Skywalker, and says that Luke will eventually seek him out.

Cut to Hoth, and Luke’s misadventures in the snow. He is knocked out by the Wampa and remains offscreen while the Probe Droid plot is moving forward.

The Emperor dismisses Vader to go wait on the command ship, where he hears his officers talking of a transmission of the Probe Droid. Vader’s decision to follow it despite his master’s insistence that he have patience is now a foreshadowing of their familial connection and weakness.

The Imperial fleet arrives over Hoth as Han is still missing, looking for Luke, and then a search party is sent out and find Han even as the walkers advance on the base to drive up tension. Cut the Bacta sequence and skip straight to Luke suiting up and getting in a speeder.

The asteroid chase could again be cut in favor of simply putting the Falcon on the Star Destroyer.

Luke’s training could be shortened, Vader’s communication with the Emperor can be cut because of redundancy.

Lando and Leia escape Cloud city and jump to Hyperspace before the Vader/Luke battle is finished. When Luke calls out to Leia from the antenna, there is no response.

Tatooine. The band plays Baroque music and dancers twist their bodies to the beat. Han is seen in Carbonite against the wall. Night falls, and a masked figure arrives and rescues Solo. ‘Who are you?’ ‘Someone who loves you’. Shot of the Falcon flying away from Tatooine.

The Rebel fleet is assembled. The plan to attack the Death Star is underway, and cuts before Luke arrives. There is a montage of preparing for battle and the shuttle goes into Hyperspace.

Luke awakens in Bacta. a sinister droid places a device against the tube and he ascends. Form cut to the elevator shaft with lights rising on its surface. It opens and Luke appears beside Vader. Together they walk into the throne room. Cut after ‘you will call me master.’

The shuttle flies past the command ship. Repurpose footage of Leia sensing Luke’s presence from ESB on the Falcon. He senses her as well from the throne room. Luke says ‘You’re gravely mistaken. Soon I’ll be dead. And you with me’. The Emperor makes his speech about his plan.

The shuttle lands and the troops file out. Cut straight to them opening the door to the bunker and beginning to set the charges. The Ewoks arrive as a surprise to everyone. The rest of the battle, and the film, plays out as in the original. I don’t know how Leia as Luke’s sister would fit into this, but perhaps it could be cut altogether.

I’m probably going to work on two or more versions, a more radical 3-in-1 movie version, and a less radical 6-part-series version, and then finish and release whichever one I think worked better. Maybe incorporate some of Neverar’s ideas in the 3-in-1 movie version, or maybe try out a third version. Point is, I’m gonna be shotgun trying a few different ideas to experiment and see what works.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I am a creature of gloop.

Alright. All finished. PM me for a link.

Keep in mind this is a prototype. Nothing is final. I have not finished cutting things out. The wording in the narrations is not final, and there is no voiceover. I also kinda forgot to remove the “he’s my brother” scene. So that’s still in the prototype. My bad.

The video’s also kinda laggy in some spots, don’t know why. I’ll look into it so it’s not in the final version.

It’s 4h29, and a massive file (10.5ish GB), so I don’t expect anyone to download or watch the whole thing, but go over it if you guys want.

TIMESTAMPS
Chapter 1: 0h00
Chapter 2: 1h18
Chapter 3: 2h55
Chapter 4: 3h21

I guess looking at those timestamps, I know where I should focus the fattrimming.

Can you please send it to me? I would love to watch it

Interesting, but I have a little question, how would you handle Lukes new saber?
Personally I could think of two options:
a) recolor it blue and imply that its Obi-Wans
b) recolor it red and imply its Palpatine’s
I think option a) would work better

“Vader! Hologram, now!”
