Star Wars 9 Film Saga... Abrams Edition?

Author
Time

If J.J. Abrams stayed on for the whole ST, would you want to see an Abrams "director"'s cut version of the saga? With his love of the OT, I'm curious to see if he might bring us a better connected, streamlined film series. What are your thoughts?

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

Are you suggesting he would fanedit the first six?

in a recent interview, when questioned whether Han shot first, Abrams responded "I would argue there was only one shot fired"... that alone shows the potential for how he'd prefer the OT be viewed before the ST. Which leaves the PT. Yes, hed be limited to the same story, but imagine the potential alternate takes, deleted scenes, etc. that could be used to create the ultimate FanEdit. I would love to see that saga. 9 films, respectfully structured to be watched one after the other, by someone who loves them.

Of course, im sure PT:Revisited would still be better ;)

I was thinking about a situation similar to this the other day, but regarding the PT specifically.

Supposedly, the first couple edits of Star Wars were train wrecks until competent editors got their hands on it.

Makes me wonder if all the stuff that was shot for the PT would have similar potential with a good editor.

Yeah, I think that it is mostly in the way that the story is told that makes the PT unwatchable. At its core it has many strengths, and if Abrams were to restructure them, it would go a long way to making them stand on their own. But if you can simply change the past, that destroys creativity. Restrictions breed it, and the PT is one heck of a restriction to a great saga. Better to select the story of the ST in a way that makes the PT and the OT better.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

A "Director's Fanedit"? Sounds like a great idea! I don't know if LFL/Disney would want to get behind such a project, but with a bit of a budget, some reworked fx, added deleted scenes, and Abrams' sharp sense of pace it could be something terrific! It would be awesome to get something like that before the ST comes, but I suppose Abrams is a little busy. Oh well, fun idea that probably will never be.

I don't get it. Why would someone who loves the movies as they are want to change them?

I wanted to say, "Ask George Lucas," but I guess he didn't love them as they were. Hence the changes. :P

Also, the two trilogies we have now are far too connected as it is. The PT is the only thing bringing down the OT.

Fixed.

I'd like to see something like that happen just so Lucas would get a little whiff of how it feels like when somebody takes the thing you thought was perfect and redoes it, and announces it as The New Definitive Version of It.

Other than that... I don't think JJ will be able to match any of the fan edits. He may alter certain scenes that might later come in handy for faneditors, but... yeah, other than that - I'm not really interested in anything like that.

The difference is that the storytelling in the prequels is shot straight to hell. All the careful editing in the world can't save scenes that are filled to overflowing with non-sequitur dialogue. Pay attention to those scenes some time, the stuff people say is often followed up by completely illogical replies.

If Abrams (or someone else) must deal with the prequels at all, I'd actually prefer a reboot of them.

All I really want is each film as it was originally seen and heard in theaters; no fixes, corrections, "improvements" or modifications necessary.

The only one who should do an "official" fanedit of the prequels is David Lynch. He's the only one who can make the PT's discordance work for it rather than against it.

Yes!

Dune is one of my all time favs! Shame even Lynch is ashamed of it, because the one time that guy did epic sci-fi it was awesome.

One day Dune wil be respected... I swear it!!!

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

Ugh, I'd rather watch AOTC on infinite loop forever than watch five minutes of a Lynch Star Wars.

AOTC on infinite loop is exactly what a Lynch Star Wars would be (of course, only with the dialogue played backward and Kyle MacLachlan's head superimposed onto Hayden's body).

Hmmm... David Lynch's Star Wars... I feel a FanEdit coming lol

Carrie fisher's opening narration:

"A beginning is a very delicate time. Know then that this is a galaxy far, far away. The Known Universe is ruled by the Imperial Emperor Palpatine the First, my father's master. In this time, the most powerful thing in the universe is the Force. The force extends life. The force expands consciousness. The force is vital to the Jedi. The Jedi Council and its masters, who the force has served for over 1,000 years, use the blue force energy, which gives them the ability to move objects. That is, to lift any object in the universe without moving. Oh, yes. I forgot to tell you — a saviour exists on only one planet in the entire universe. A desolate, dry planet with vast deserts. Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as the Tuskan Raiders, who have long held a prophecy that a boy would come, a messiah who would bring balance to the force. The planet is Tatooine, also known as Dune..."

Lynch is not ashamed of Dune the studio was ashamed of it and would not let him release his full vision of what he created.

That's why the extended TV cut is now disowned by Lynch as Alan smithee....

Anyway Lynch can work wonders sometimes... Even though a little weird it can also be wonderful.
