Star Wars 1977 releases on 35mm — Page 28

There are tons of Star Wars prints out there, most are faded Eastman prints, but there are also IB Tech prints a-plenty.

A good place to start is the 35mm forum, http://www.35mmforum.com/ , I would also head down to The Museo del Cine, at Agustin R. Caffarena 51 in La Boca, and talk to the staff there, they are bound to know some collectors and the local scene.
We only have the full 1933 King Kong because of a 35mm print found in Argentina, so you never know what you may find.

In other news, doctors hav finally worked out what is happening with my daughter, it is a rare bacteria that has made its way into her lungs. The good news is that it is treatable with some very specific anitbiotics, and we started the treatment this morning, she should be recovered within a week. After weeks of her getting worse, and no solution in sight, this is a huge relief.

I’m back at the surgeon on Friday to try and sort out why I am still in constant pain, (it should have settled down by now), so hopefully I will have similar luck and we can all go home and start getting back to normal! Thanks for all the kind thoughts.

I’m so relieved to hear your baby girl will be fine. I bet the stress over this didn’t help your own recovery - hopefully now your health will be able to improve more swiftly as well 😃

Thank you for all the info. I’ll get in touch with El Museo del Cine to find out more. If there’s anything I can get my hands on I will travel as soon as I can (I’m about 300 miles away).

I’m still learning about the different types of film and sources, but I’m very excited about finding some reels.

I’m waiting for my confirmation e-mail at 35mmforum.com

Glad to hear some good news about you and your baby’s health.

Thanks again!

I have a bad feeling about this…

I’m relieved to hear that your daughter will be ok! I will admit, I feared the worst.

The real spot was from where it cuts from Owen and Beru in the kitchen to Luke and C-3PO in the speeder and my older copy of the JSC has 4 extra frames in there.

I’ve IVTC’ed four JSC:
segaflip’s (captured by dark_jedi), Arnie.d’s X9 cap, althor1138’s HF9G cap, and my own LD.
None of those had extra frames than GOUT …

nor poita’s Super8, nor mverta’s color ref.

On the other hand there must be tons of prints, as poita said, and tonnes of JSC which I HAVEN’T analyzed.

I never knew that, that’s awesome! Out of question- did they even bother to keep film negatives back then, or did they burn them to retrieve the silver nitrate?

RKO kept the negative - but they cut it to satisfy the Production Code for the 1938 re-release. (As per usual for the time, the cuts were made directly to the negative. I guess the negative trims could have been melted down to retrieve the silver, or possibly just thrown out. After all, at the time it would have been easy to assume that the MPAA was never going to allow them to exhibit the uncut version again, so they wouldn’t have had much incentive to keep them.) All the highest-generation positive and dupe negative elements were made off of the already cut negative.

However, they did indeed eventually destroy the negative; in a 1989 American Cinematographer article, the then-director of Turner’s film archives made an educated guess that it because it was worn out from printing too many copies off of it - in his words, “Kong was a victim of its own success.” (I’m not sure if nitrate film was still in use at the time, so I don’t know if it was melted down to retrieve the silver during its destruction. I suppose it’s possible, but it likely wasn’t the primary reason for its destruction.)

Just a quick note to say I have had a rather catastrophic power supply/hardware failure here, it has taken out my workstation, the internal RAID, the external RAID, my Titan, Motherboard, Xeon CPU, SSDs and pretty much everything that was plugged in at the time. Chips blown off drives, tracks burned off the motherboard, it is a disaster.
I’ve lost well over 30TB of data, and am still working out what is left.

So a heads up to anyone I have done scans for, the copy you have is most likely the only copy now in existence, I no longer have a backup, so please, please, please back up your copy if you haven’t already done so.

I’m not sure what I am going to do at this point, nearly all 35mm I have scanned is also backed up offsite, so I need to get a computer together and check those archives, but I have lost a ton of work, and pretty much all of the small format (16mm/8mm etc) and laserdisc, VHD and VHS captures.

The only computing I am currently running is on my phone, so please give me some leeway with answering emails etc. and preferably contact me via gmail or via the forum as I can access those from anywhere.

So again, if I have done any scanning for you, please make an offsite backup, as I am no longer holding a copy here.

Damn, that’s awful poita. Hopefully you get your station back up and working and anyone you sent scans to can send a copy back.

Sith happens, man.

I don’t want copies sent back, I was really only keeping backups as a ‘last resort’ courtesy, I had been severely short on space before this happened. It is just a reminder to people out there to back up their files as I no longer have them.

Oh no! That’s terrible, Poita! Glad to hear that the data is safe but all of that hardware… I am sending you a hug.

I lost a shitload of data, and months of work, but most of the 35mm scans should be okay.

Thanks for the suggestion, I am currently deciding whether to take it as a sign from the gods and bow out of the hobby, or start over. I lost so much work.
The reason I had the external RAID plugged in was that I was backing everything up, it feels like a cruel joke that the system would crap its pants during a backup of TBs of work and take out both the original files and the backups at the same time.
