Thanks to everyone who has offered to donate so far! I have you noted down and will reach back out to you once we hit our goal and everything is finalized.

We're at approximately 6 pledged of the 11 HDDs needed.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Nice work DrDre.

I apologise upfront for being slack, I still do not have internet at the new residence, so can't easily do the required reading, but are you using something similar to the probability density function I posted a few years back, or are you using a different method? The ability to use a very different reference frame makes me think you are using something else.

I'll bounce you a PM, I have some other colour recovery algorithms I'd like to discuss with you.

I extended the method, where you match histograms in multiple color spaces. I did this in three ways:

1) Replace the histogram with an estimated probability distribution, using kernel fitting, which is easier to invert.

2) Invert the estimated cumulative probability distribution to obtain a direct mapping between the colors in the source frame and the reference in multiple color spaces. This can then be used to predict other frames.

3) Stabilize the solution.

Shit, didn't think of that.

That is brilliant.

Check your PMs :)

In the mean time, I managed to improve the color matching method. There appears to be some color noise hidden in the raw scan, that was difficult for the algorithm to handle. The new algorithm is less sensitive to the color noise. Once again the reference is the Semi-Specialised Edition V2.2 frame posted earlier:

The results are as follows (raw/rough correction/correction with algo):

DrDre, I have to say that your colour matching is pretty fantastic, the accuracy with which you recreated the Semi-Specialised Edition V2.2 colors on the print with all that lovely filmic grain and detail is amazing. Bravo!

Very nice indeed.

Dre, will the GUI eventually be sophisticated enough where you can lay out a whole film, organizing which shots will be corrected to which frames, and press go?

I've been lurking here for years and finally decided to join because this project (And Team negative1's project) are making me feel like a kid seeing Star Wars for the first time again.

...Couple the incredible hard work (And immense hard drive space) of Poita and the spot on color correction of DrDre, and you have the greatest thing ever.

I can't wait to see what you brilliant folks come up with next.

At this point the GUI allows you to select a frame to be corrected, crop it, then select a reference, crop it, then build a color correction model. You can save the model, and import the model at a later time, or use the model directly. You subsequently select any number of files you want to correct and voila, it corrects them and stores them with the same name in a automatically created directory called adjusted. It can handle bmp, jpg, png, tif (8 bit/16 bit), and exr (HDR files).

Things may change in the future, but that depends on the challenges I will encounter.

I hope to have some more samples up before my surgery next week.

I'm going to make my own thread this soon, but I'd like to announce that we're up to 10 HDDs pledged. We only have 2 more to go! Please keep 'em coming, folks. We're almost there...

Just as an interesting cultural difference between North America and Australia. 'Rooting' appears to mean 'cheering' or 'supporting' as far as I can tell in Northern America, but in Australia 'rooting' means 'having intercourse'...

So I am hoping you are from America :)

LOL...In North America, "rooting" does mean "cheering" for you, or "supporting", but it doesn't have anything to do with "intercourse".

I am also saying a prayer for you Poita...and I am from North America.

Hahaha that's funny as hell! I'm from America, so I think you know what I mean. hahahahahaha

We could just use both meanings, but I don't think poita would feel much better as a result.

Can also mean "to search", as in "rooting around in the cupboard".

Indeed it can!

I just got home from surgery, rather battered and very, very sore, but glad to be home again. They are cautiously rating it as a 'success', will see more over the next 6 weeks or so of recovery.

Now you can all go back to your rooting, in its many and varied forms.
