Nah, it'll be Team Blu style, but I do plan to name the team Team i².
A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.
I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Well, I am sure a team could take the scans and make it look just like the correct lower image :)

Yeah, but how big of a team? Like, three to four people? Twenty-two to twenty-five? This is very important information to know.
Team Olie
There is no j in team !
[Only electrical engineers will get that joke.]
We can't decide whether or not we want to join your team.
Would you have had Groucho Marx?
However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

The correction done on the posted images is only rough, to check that the colour is still lurking in there.
Is this the same process you used with THX?

Surely what you meant to say was "LFL release quality (for territories outside of USA)". ;)
BTW great work & honestly wish you all the best with move and everything mate. :)

Ugh, electrical engineers are the worst.

This is how the Empire Strikes Back Semi-Specialised Edition V2.2 looks in that scene:
Based on those scans I get the impression that fleshtones have been more affected overall by the red fade on the print than anything else.
Does anybody know why its the Empire Strikes Back prints that seem to be more affected by red fade compared to prints from the other two OT films, at least from what i've seen? I'm curious.
kk650: ESB came after they stopped making IB Technicolor prints and before Kodak started making LPP prints. Basically, all ESB prints are on shitty likely-to-fade film stocks.
So we have IB Technicolor for SW and LPP for RotJ. ESB was made in the transition period with no stable fade-free options available.

Ah I see, thanks for the explanation!
There's definately something about ESB because all the prints i've seen on ebay have also gone reddish/pink, while the colours of ROTJ and especially the technicolor Star Wars prints have fared much better:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-2-x-35mm-Film-Cells-Vintage-Star-Wars-Empire-Strikes-Back-1980-C3PO-/121710751764?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1c5686b014&nma=true&si=06F%252F9Mi%252BcLpUJm2rItrF9QGoN2Q%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
Makes me wonder if George Lucas himself didn't remember what ESB looked like theatrically and had to improvise a new colour scheme on the fly for the lowry master. It would explain why ESB has always felt like the odd one out of the OT blu-rays, at least to me.

For those interested, here's the same shot from the print taken from althor1138's fantastic The Empire Strikes Back "COLD" edition:
althor1138, I can't thank you enough for creating these "COLD" editions, they have been incredibly helpful in working out how to go about regrading the Original Trilogy. I hope that they'll be of as much help to everybody here working on colour correcting these prints as they have been to me.

Yeah, that is pretty much right, just really bad timing as far as film technology went.
There were a few prints struck on better stock for a re-release around the time of Return of the Jedi, but they are nearly impossible to find.

I agree that the JSC colors look great in certain scenes but then in others, the yellow tint just comes across as too much IMHO, like in this scene below:
Its certainly a very distinctive look but not the most balanced colourwise. The yellow tint can be quite overwhelming and not let the other colours get a look in, especially the blues.

Thanks! I'm just glad they have been useful! They certainly do reveal some oddities amongst the releases.

I'm putting together a team to work on restoring these scans.
I need at the very minimum:
1. A colorist
2. Two dirt cleaners
3. An artist to fix really bad (e.g., big scratches) damage, just in case
4. A QA person with deep knowledge about the film
Volunteering will obviously get you early access to the scans, but you must have the skills, free time, and equipment necessary to do the work.
I plan on wearing a few different hats. Send me a PM if you're interested.

In principle it is possible to retrieve the colors with a color matching algorithm, provided you have a good reference. In this case I matched the colors of the print to the frame posted previously from the Semi-Specialised Edition V2.2 (bottom):
But DrDre...
Surely this is how it looks?

We aim to please:
LOL! That looks great!
All it needs now is a decent gaussian blur and a crop. ;)
[ Scanning stuff since 2015 ]
Hah! Needs some warping, too. :P
Or if anybody prefers any of the other color gradings from the GOUT, JSC, 97 SE, and 2004 DVD, based on Althor's compilation:

The fleshtones might be more affected by the brightness than the color balance. As colors appear darker, they also appear more saturated.
