Does anyone else here know which interview I’m remembering where GL says “the original film/negative/interpositive” was cut up for 97ANH? And the the “original” no longer exists. I’m pretty sure he made it clear but he may have been referring to existing media of that time degrading.

He re-cut the negative, yes. But the trims were saved, not tossed in the trash.

So, he was being honest, on a technicality, that the original negative didn’t exist. But all of its components still existed, just in pieces.

Yes technically their own negative was changed. But in any real sense there’s not “one original reel” since they exist all over the world and have been restored by fans and the BFI etc. Again it’s all somewhere in the big “revisionist” thread pinned above here.

What does this even mean? There is only one negative for the films and that is the one that was “destroyed” or more accurately disassembled. There is in fact “one original reel” and it’s the original negative. Everything else is a copy and therefore is not original, at least not in a physical sense. I’m not even sure why we’re still arguing about this… who cares what George said about the negative, what matters is that we’re getting what we’ve always wanted finally, let’s bicker about the process, after we find out what it actually entailed once released…

who cares what George said

I feel like this is a better and better POV to stand on, especially once you can start measuring the distance in time from his selling the whole company and having absolutely nothing to do with it in decades.

I know it might seem weird, but I just… don’t care what he thinks, or feels, about this. I don’t have any desire to really find out how he feels about the restoration happening (but I would also bet there’s no way he’s not on the documentary about the restoration when it finally comes out, too, haha)

So much of the focus here seems to be on getting mad at him, or hoping HE’S mad at this, or some combination of the two and I just… don’t get it! I don’t know this dude, I’ve never hung out with him, I don’t talk to him, will never be at a party with him, he’s never actually done anything to me and I don’t want anything done to him. He’s just a guy, and he hasn’t had anything to do with Star Wars for over a decade now.

I like these three movies quite a bit, and am very interested in what they’re going to look and sound like (so far as I can tell, it’s phenomenal) when they finally get re-released. I’m way more concerned with how I’m going to feel about this restoration than with how he feels about… basically anything.

Maybe I’m off the mark here but wasn’t the entire crux of “why the original Star Wars doesn’t exist” based on the feelings of one man? But now nobody should care? Pretty wild to suggest it’s not important given the history of these films until a few month ago, and the history of this site. But whatever, the vibes here really suck recently considering there’s a bunch of positive news for once. Later.
