Star Wait - documentary

(Edited)

I saw this discussed in a couple other threads, but not in one of its own.

Go out to Target and buy this, it really makes fans like us feel much less alone. It’s a wonderful dorkumentary about people who lined up for six weeks to see AOTC. It’s funny and a damn good time to watch. Cheap, to boot, and with some excellent commentaries.

Has anyone else here seen it?

A bunch of guys over at TFN have been bashing it and proudly proclaiming that they bought it and threw it in the trash. They said they got sick of some guy with a mohawk or something. Anyway, it sounds like something I'd want to see.

The guy with the mohawk, Josh, was the #1 guy in line and I actually liked him quite a bit.

As has been established on these boards before, most who dwell on TFN are morons.

True, but in this case, they're right. This documentary is terrible. They tried to paper over it with a fair amount of semi-celebrities in the commentary and on the special features, but the doc itself is ham-handedly edited, and for something that took over 3 years to complete, should be tighter than this thing is. There's really no through-line here, and the way the characters are presented really ISN'T all that flattering, or compelling, or even all that interesting. I'd like to see a fan doc that actually adds a different dimension to the people in line besides the over-obvious "dorkumentary" angle that every documentary plays to the hilt, this one included. It's like even the subjects of these things are more than happy to marginalize themselves as much as possible.

The LiningUp.tv doc already looks to be a lot funnier, shot much better, and full of more interesting people.

Well, I guess I'm going to just have to disagree with you. Like I said, I enjoyed it immensely and came out of it feeling like those featured were buddies of mine.

However, I will say that a big factor of why I like it is because I travel a lot for concerts and, because I'm travelling, I want to get the best possible place inside I can. Therefore, I usually line up 8-10hrs before the doors open. I've met a lot of friends that I still keep in contact with this way, so the mentality is something close to home for me.

I sort of liked it. It's a kooky little slice of Star Wars mania we otherwise wouldn't see had it not been preserved. (I wish someone had made a documentary about the tenth anniversary SW con!) There was plenty of total ignorance elsewhere, especially in the media, about why they were camped out in line for so long, even more so for Episode III. I'm not sure what Lucasfilm will think of Target piggybacking this thing on the Episode III DVD release though. You just know some irate parent is going to miss the profanity warning on the label.
Those TFN guys may boast about trashing the DVD, but they're still out five bucks, aren't they?

As for those guys at TFN, TheCassidy once said something like "They set in their Yoda underoos, not seeing the irony."

And if I remember correctly you paraded around my rant at TFN like a good little fanboy.

I was at Target and got this DVD also. it was cool. IMO the funnest dude was "Grimlock". he reminded me of one of the cartoon guys on "family guy" the rock group kiss tv forum guy that was also the Battlestar galactica forum guy.

Yeah, someone should get Grimlock to do a commentary track for the movies someday.
There is another DVD coming out about the same subject. It's becoming a cottage industry!

...much like fan edits.

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

LingingUpTv's "Fans Gone Wild!" DVD is great, and there's more insight into the private life of Grimlock for those who can stomach it. There's tons of schenanigans on the disc, in conjunction with the Star Wait and Star Woids you get a very elaborate look into the Hollywood line life. Now we need the NYC liners to make a comparitable dvd. For me the best part of the LUT:FGW! was an interview with two FX guys, about making props and stuff. and yet surrounded by all the line low brow hijinks there are memorable interviews with some of the non-on-camera line fans which give a good overview of the personality types on the line. Personally i love stuff with people yelling at the fans (wish there was more), there are some great clips on LUT:FGW!. Star Wars is Satan!!!!

Heheheheh... Thanks! Glad you liked it! As to people yelling at the line, we didn't have too much of that this time. People were either very cool, or very violent.
